Cleaning whole building due to illness?

Sounds similar to the Norwalk Virus that was on the cruise ships a few years ago.....
:confused3

When we were vacationing in Las Vegas in October of 2004 there was an outbreak at the Flamingo and they had to close and disinfect the hotel. We were thankful that we were staying at the MGM at the time.
So it does happen.

I was at CBR a few weeks ago and we met a family who's child came down with Croupe when there and the mom was telling me she saw and heard a few children around the parks with that cough. It's disappointing when you get sick over your vacation. We had it happen to all of us 2 Christmas' ago when we were in South FLorida with family. We all dropped like flies on Christmas day and the day after with vomiting. Luckily it was a 24 hour thing but the strange thing was we cought it from our family with in the first 24 hours with them. They had it circuling around for a week.

We just returned five days ago from a 10 day stay at WL. Now, first I will mention that I am due to deliver our third sone in 7 short weeks so please take that into consideration. However, while there, our DS 11 months, became ill on the 2nd night. He would wake up about 2 am coughing and gagging. I would give him some decongestant and AH and then he would be fine in the morning. This symptom did not reoccur until that night again. I think this is a bit coincidental. While there, I did come down with intestinal upset that was very severe TWICE! I would suggest that if you are prone to intestinal upset (as so many are) then take the meds you need with you, stick to bottled water and stay hydrated! I would have to agree that traveling in general makes us prone to pick up germs that we might not have previously been sbject to!

Don't use the phones in the rooms withuot wiping them down .

I work in the field and use to use alot of office phones and would get sick all the time .Now I use just my cell for all calls and haven't been nearly as sick the past 3 years .

Just a thought for prevention.

I don't understand why it's obviously a rumor. :confused3 Yes, it's 2nd hand information, but it sounds like the source is known and it's not just hearsay. Yes, track down that phone number! :)

Regardless, I'm glad that Disney is taking action. Not fun to get sick on vacation, especially something like that.
Definitions of rumor:

A rumor is a piece of purportedly true information that circulates without substantiating evidence

I didn't say it wasn't true...just that it was a rumor...which it is..unless hearing it third person is substantiating evidence.

Anyway, I don't disagree with it being possible..just symantics :-)

Because the OP did not personally witness this happening, then yes it is hearsay. She got the info from her Mother who also did not witness this happening. Unless they read the account in the Newspaper or saw the story on the News then it is hearsay as no one has posted they actually witnessed this happening.

Even then some postings on this forum by people who say they saw or witnessed something happening are total fabrications. Not that Skiwee would ever do that, but it has happened before.

Once someone posted a very elaborate and detailed account of thier check in at a Disney resort and how they were so badly mistreated. Everyone posted their "Oh my, how horrible" responses, and the entire story was a fabrication as I happened to be checking in at the exact same time and know the story told here was not any where close to what happened.

So always take what you read on Internet forums with a grain of salt and unless you witnessed it personally.

I have a different definition...

A rumor is "A piece of unverified information of uncertain origin usually spread by word of mouth".

In the case of this story, it's true that it is a rumor to us, but perhaps not to the original poster since she knows the origin of the information. So a rumor to us I can buy, but not a rumor as far as she is concerned.

BTW, I didn't want to give the dictionary.com definition before because I always see that listed as a message board pet peeve. I didn't want anyone talking about me as the example of the week! :rotfl:

This wouldn't surprise me, not because Disney doesn't clean well, but because Americans are notorious for not washing their hands. I did a lot of research before our cruise last spring. These germs are passed feces to mouth. The cruiseline installed hand sanitizers all over the ship to combat an outbreak.

So, wash your hands constantly! Think how many times other people have touched the railings, ride hand bars, etc. I also carry instant hand sanitizer in my backpack.

I never thought about cleaning the phone off. We go to Mexico next summer, so I am happy for any ideas.

Exactly what I do!!! That Purell goes right in my backpack or fannypack. I use it every hour. Especially when traveling in the cooler months. I do wipe down the doorknobs and the phone with sanitary wipes when we check in. Also the tv remote. I don't think that's obsessive.....just stuff that housekeeping doesn't do.

DS got a horrible stomach virus while at Disney last Christmas. Over the years, I've seen so many people continuing to "vacation" even when one member of their party comes down with something awful, instead of keeping the poor sick person in the room most of the time. Sharing the wealth.

I remember staying at AKL and seeing a boy who looked about 10 swimming in the pool. He got out of the pool and vomited onto one of the small bushes. His dad rushed over, held him steady while he threw up, then helped him right back into the pool! Gross! No staff or lifeguard noticed. I mentioned it to a CM as I was gathering up my kids and departing. I figured next time the boy would vomit IN the pool.

Another trip we were at Typhoon Lagoon. In the kiddie area we watched a man changing a small child's diaper right near the pool. The kid had diarrhea going down his legs. The man just wiped him up and sent him back in the pool.

I guess the attitude is: if you've paid so much to go on vacation, you are entitled to vacation as hard as you please, no matter how sick you or your kids get.

This is selfish; it's cruel to the sick kid and exposes everyone else you come in contact with. Even if it is your once-in-a-lifetime-trip, there are limits when someone becomes really ill.

I have started to do the same. I'm am not a germaphobe in general, but the remote, phone, and doorknobs are something that I try and remember to clean when we check in. And I don't touch the doorknob when leaving public restrooms. That's a big one for me!

I am going to close this topic now. It has wandered from the original post. If and when any more information is received about this you can request that the post be reopened. Thank you.
