cleaning engagement ring

Does any one have any advice on how to clean a diamond engagement ring at home? I dont want to have to keep going to the store to get it cleaned. (I love when it sparkles!!) Thanks!

I've read that in between professional cleanings, diamond rings can be cleaned using very mild soaps - like mild dish detergents or baby shampoos. I've tried both and they help to make them sparkle!

When I was in college I worked in a large jewelry store and being we only had 2 steamers and hundreds of engagement rings we used Windex and a soft toothbrush and then ran under very warm water. If I am on vacation I use some mouthwash with an old toothbrush and it works almost as well.

The lady at Kay Jewlers told me that if I wanted that sparkle back between ring check ups (like if it got dirty before the wedding) to use a little bit of rubbing alcohol, and make sure that you let it dry completely. It really does work and restores the shine just great

They also sell a cleaner at Walmart called connoisseurs jewelry cleaner. It is only $2.50. I use it and it works great.

I use jewlery cleaner from my jewelers. If you use it about once a week it should stay clean. Also, dont wear your ring in the shower it will build up a soap film I take my ring off even when i wash my hands, i dont let any liquids near it. If i notice a dullness between washes i will just run it under water or wash with the dish soap This is what i do with my ring anyway. Dish washing soap like Palmolive is a great idea because it brings it up like new. I am a fanatic about my ring being clean. even my jewelers asked me if i even wear it because it stays so clean and has no scratches Its just i adore it so much, it is my baby. I also have a slight obsession with diamonds so that plays a part too

I have jewlrey cleaning wipes that I got from our jewler. They are dry and do a good job of getting the dirt off. I haven't quite figured out a good way to get the spot under the diamond/by the bottom of the prongs clean yet as it's hard to get in there with the wipes.

I would try using a a little brush or toothbrush for the little spot I use it on mine and it works perfectly

i use a tub of liquid jewelry cleaner you drop it in, and there is a little brush you cna brush it with. my DH's dad owns 4 jewelry stores and he gave it to me, but i have seen it i stores. he said ppl don't clean their rings like they should. you wear it every day, and you take a bath every day, so you should clean your ring just liek you would yourself, every day! good luck hope this helps!

I had been wondering how to clean mine too! I never take it off because I'm scared I would lose it, so it's already kind of grimy. Although I have had a couple strangers come into my work, and tell me how sparkly it is. I love that!

I love it! It smells like bananas...

The jewelry cleaner you get at the jewelers is just ammonia, that's why it smells awful. You can do it cheaply yourself. Buy ammonia at walmart or something, soak your ring in it, and use an old toothbrush to get off the grime.

I personally like my banana-smelling cleaner...

I have a jewelery cleaner got from our jeweler. It keeps it clean. I do love it when I go and have my ring checked and they steam it. It comes out unbelievably shiney.

Kays told us to clean it with toothpaste and a toothbrush. We dont though. We take it down, ever so often, to get it cleaned at a local jewelry store that our friend owns. We have had a lot of trouble out of my ring because its "white gold" or whatever.... I was engaged for years before the actual wedding and white gold tries to color back to its origional state (A nice little fact you might just put up in your memory rolodex somewhere).... so one of my rings has a yellowish tint from having worn it for so long-- while my wedding band is sparkly and new all the time. We get it buffed back to its pretty white gold every now and again but you can only do that so long. I am fixing to have to go and get it 'rodium plated' before it gets too bad. Its not "YELLOW" like you all are thinking... but when you get it close to your eye and pay great attention to detail, you can see the variation in the two colors.

I worked in a jewelry store for a few years so here's my 2cents. Any jewelry cleaner from any jewelry store or grocery store or whatever is EXACTLY the same as what they use in the jewelry store. Many stores will even give you a small jar if you ask for one (but they're usually under $5 anyway, so no big deal). The thing that gets it super shiny is the steam cleaner that most nicer/bigger stores have. All it really does though is blow off all of the excess cleaner and any dirt that may have loosened while the ring soaks. When the steamer would go down, we'd use a can of compressed air like you use to clean a keyboard - same exact effect. So, for the perfect jewlery store clean at home, get a jar of jewelry cleaner (make sure it's not the kind that's only for silver) and a can of air and you'll be good as new. Then you can just visit the jewelry store for inspections and the occasional polishing or rhodium plating.

I use mild dish detergent (it was super cheap and actually says "mild" on the label) and an old soft toothbrush. I soak the ring in soapy water for about 10 minutes and then gently scrub it with the toothbrush, run it under warm water and use a cloth that came with the ring to dry it.

All of the ideas posted already sound good...I have used the jarred jewelry cleaner, windex (heated a little in the microwave), toothpaste and a toothbrush.

One thing that I can add...make sure you get your prongs checked at least once a year...my jeweler recommends every 6 months. I have had my ring for about a year and a half and already knocked my rock loose twice and lost a side stone...I am very clumsy...!!!

ETA: They also will polish the platinum and the ring looks brandy new...
