Classic (or Fun) Children's Books

At a younger age, our favorites were the Sandra Boyton books.

A little older, hands down, it's Kevin Henkes. Full of irony, humor, and sweetness.

We also love to read the Skippy John Jones books and get our tounges tied.

Here is what you HAVE TO DO!! Save "Monster At The End Of This Book" (Grover) until they are about 3yrs old. Never let them see it. Then, video them as you read the book. Both my kids about freaked out trying to keep me from turning the pages. So cute, so funny. Classic.

Ghosts' Dinner, Betsy Bunny's Birthday, Arthur, Little Bear, Franklin, and Disney books were popular with me as a kid. Also, The Jolly Postman is a good book, but for a bit older youngsters as you can pull out letters and such from the book.

DD3 has been mildly obsessed with the 3 Llama Llama books since she was tiny. There's Red Pajamas, Mad at Mama and Misses Mama. All really nice books, and BEAUTIFULLY illustrated!

For the niece, you might consider one of the Fancy Nancy books. They're great fun, and have great vocabulary word swhen Nancy tries to be Fancy!

DD also adores Eloise. The real books are really long, but there are I can read books (maybe step into learning) which are much more basic and WAY shorter, even though they're paperbacks.

Right now she's onto the Disney storybooks, like Happily ever after tales, bedtime stories, etc. They're beautiful anthologies with Disney stories. I caught most of them on clearance through Amazon, but there's a couple of new ones, including a playhouse Disney one, if they're into that.

How about "Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late" or any of the Elephant & Piggie books by Mo Willems? My favorites are "There is a Bird on Your Head" and "Today I Will Fly." My DS, now 6, always loved these.

Mo Willems is my son's (he's six) favorite author. :thumbsup2 Some other good ones:
SkippyJon Jones
Chrysanthemum
There's an Animal Strike at the Zoo
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

A lot of my suggestions have been given already (Eric Carle, Where the Wild Things Are, Mo Willems, Kevin Henkes), but here are a few others:

The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams

Good Night Harry by Kim Lewis

Sam and the Firefly by P.D. Eastman

Wacky Wednesday by Theo LeSieg

Because a Little Bug Went Ka-Choo by Rosetta Stone

King Midas and the Golden Touch by AL Perkins

A Fish Out of Water by Helen Palmer

Sam Sunday and the Strange Disappearence of Chester Cats by Robyn Supraner

Snow by Roy McKie & P.D. Eastman

I think that is a nice idea OP, I do the same thing, everyone always gets a book, along with whatever else I get them.

I always liked the books by Martin Waddell. They are really sweet and some of them made me get misty as I read them to DS. "Can't you Sleep, Little Bear" and "Let's Go Home, Little Bear" were my favourites.
