All of my daughter's schools are in-state. The farthest one is about 2.5 hours away and two are local (within 30 minutes). I think she wants to "go away" though and although we've told her that she can live on campus wherever she chooses, I think she's thinking leaning toward a different area.

DS has applied to a couple of colleges. Of course, we haven't visited them yet , so a little backyards, but it's progress.

There are some we haven't visited either. If she gets in, we'll visit. They are in FL, GA and SC.

My daughter wants her own apt and car on campus. There are two she applied to that allow that. She'll have to think long and hard about the others if she gets in and decides to go to one of those.

How far away do your seniors want to go. My daughter doesn't want to go that far. I think she remembers her sister suddenly coming home when there were gas explosions right near her school then covid. I also think she wants to be where there is public transportation so she feels she can get home. She thought about a school in Manhattan but said no - we have family there but she simply doesn't really like being in a city.

Mine wanted to go all the way to Utah or Washington state if allowed. We are in NJ so I put a cap on that. She has an autoimmune condition and receives infusions every 6 weeks at the hospital. I told her I need to be a short plane ride away in case she flares up and needs us. So, Indiana and NC are the furthest she has a applied. My Mom lives in Charlotte 2 hrs from App State and my College best friend lives in Columbus Indiana, 2.5 hrs from Valparaiso. Other than that she applied to schools in PA and here in Jersey.
She is the most self directed and independent one of our bunch.

DS did get his first acceptance post card. It said a formal letter is coming. Still need him to look at public schools. The cost of private... yuck

FSU and University of Miami. FSU will let her live off campus. We did visit FSU but not Univ of Miami.

Checking in… my DD has got all of her apps in: Embry Riddle in Daytona, Bama, U of Florida, UCF, UMaine. No response from any of them yet. She’s a golfer and would love to golf at ER. She sent the coach her swing video at the end of September. No response. She placed very high at New Englands so sent another email to let the coach know along with the video again. No response. So that’s not looking good. 3 D3 schools have offered her golf team spots.. one is in state and she has no interest in going there. One was Sweet Briar in Virginia but they do not offer her intended major (aeronautics). The third she had a phone call with and they do offer her major but we’re not sure what to think of the school. It is Averett in Virginia. She’s going to apply. So now we are still waiting on acceptances along with any merit financial aid she may receive. Many of her friends have been receiving acceptances and she’s received none. It’s difficult but we just keep telling her it’s not a competition. Well, not a competition with her friends lol. Hanging in there!

Just joining the party here. My son wants to go away to school. We live in MA. He is applying to one private school (my alma mater) 45 minutes away but all his other schools are at least 12 hours away, in OH, IN, FL, SC, and NC. His sister is in college in NC and the distance hasn't been a problem so I think he wants to try something different as well. It would be nice having them closer but I think the distance has really helped her to grow up and problem solve on her own without coming home whenever she feels lonely or overwhelmed.

Wow, thanks so much! FSU is her first choice and 2nd is University of Miami. She was early acceptance for FSU but her ACT scores were too late in getting reported so they moved her to regular acceptance, which I hope doesn't work too negatively for her. She only took the ACT once and took it late in the game, so our fault. Everything is there now, though.

I hear if you are on the line they sometimes offer you acceptance if you start summer semester, and if you accept that you're good. If they offer that of course she'll take it.

He’s looked at and applied to Xavier, Dayton and Miami Ohio. Daughter and I visited Wooster, Denison and Ohio Wesleyan but she ended up elsewhere.

We are from NE also, and went to an athletic showcase at Embry Riddle with DS. Asst coach wrote once before we went, very briefly, and the head coach talked to us after the showcase. Basically he told us that the state of FL gives him a significant amount of money for each student he takes from FL, and he gets nothing for students from outside of FL, so it’s a no-brainer for him to mainly take kids from FL. He also said there were no athletic scholarships for aviation students. (Not sure that applies for aeronautics, but something to look into.) As a D1 school, the athletic routine is extremely regimented, also (like up and in the gym at 6am, breakfast at 8am, am classes, practice in the afternoon, dinner, study hall, lights out at a certain time, etc.), and if the GPA drops below a certain level (I think it was 3.3 or 3.5), parents are responsible for hiring a tutor, etc. If your daughter wants to play, she should consider the D3 schools! It’s still vigorous, challenging and lots of other positive things, but not as much hinges on it the athletic part as it does with D1, if that makes sense, so less pressure. Hope this helps.

@design_mom, I might have some thoughts on Nursing programs if you are interested. I am a nurse, and have worked with tons of graduates of many different nursing programs. My DD graduated with her BSN in 2020 and is now in an MSN program. I think there are about 6 or 8 students she went to HS with who have also completed nursing programs, as well, and they all went to different schools! It’s nice to see this many young people going into Nursing! PM me if I can help.

Well, FWIW, FSU beat UM 31-28 yesterday in Tallahassee. But both are excellent schools. Very different environments but both schools are excellent.

She was early acceptance for FSU but her ACT scores were too late in getting reported so they moved her to regular acceptance, which I hope doesn't work too negatively for her. She only took the ACT once and took it late in the game, so our fault. Everything is there now, though.

IF she is offered Summer enrollment, jump at it! First of all, a Summer offer is actually a No for Fall -- but that's not why I say go for it.

If FSU is the same as UCF (and I think they are), all summer enrollment means is that she takes ONE online course during Summer B, and she is guaranteed IN for Fall. Our DD got a summer offer at UCF, took two classes from home, and got A's in both and started her college career with 6 hours of A. That was a big help to her, and super easy.

My DD goes to UCF. I don't know anything about their athletic recruiting, but if she needs any info about the school itself or surrounding community, let me know.

The only thing I know about athletics at UCF is that the athletes are housed at the Towers at Knights Plaza. There are four high-rise towers, and my DD was in Tower 4 her freshman year. Another DIS friend's DD was in Tower 3 and will probably be there all 4 years. The Towers are VERY nice and ideally located. Let me know if we can help in any way.

ETA: UCF definitely has aeronautics! UCF was FOUNDED in partnership with NASA and is VERY proud of that history. Every year one football game is the "Space Game" and the team wears special space-themed uniforms. This year, their helmets said "Nauts" instead of "Knights" in recognition of their strong connection to the space program.

My daughter also applied to Xavier and Miami Ohio (and my son is a junior majoring in Economics & Finance at Miami) and we live very close to Ohio Wesleyan. Good luck to your son!

I'm not positive a summer offer is a NO for Fall at FSU, but it is at UCF. Their offer letter is quite clear. You should be able to call FSU Admissions and ask if that's the case.

Yes, FSU and UM are very competitive to get into. UM used to be "Suntan U," but those days are long gone.

You can probably get some idea of her chances from the College Confidential link I posted above. Also, I think most Florida state universities post their statistics on entering freshman GPAs, SAT/ACT scores, etc, etc. If you can't find it on FSU's webpage, ask the Admissions office.

All of the major Florida universities have gotten much more competitive in recent years. FSU and UF were always difficult, but now so are UCF, FIU in Miami, and USF in Tampa. All are very good academically, all have medical colleges, and they are not easy to get into.

Our college counselor in HS (who was wonderful) suggested one or two "safe school" applications, a couple where you think you have a chance of admission, and one or two "stretch" schools. DD got her safe school (FIU) surprisingly quickly. UCF was a "maybe" school for her, and she got her summer offer in January. FSU and UF (in that order) were her stretch schools and have late acceptance announcements.

We took the tour at UCF in early February, and at the end of the tour, DD said, "I'm not waiting on the other schools -- THIS is what I want."

We walked over to the bookstore and bought teeshirts to make it official, and she accepted the moment we got home. And she's loved it there.

well, VERY slowly making some progress....goodness, DD is a procrastinator extraordinaire.....and I know where she gets it. We did finally do 3 college tours, all state schools, in TN. Don't really plan on any other tours. she's completed one application, for early consideration, it was due Nov 1. we think she got it in on time....She's working on the second school's application. THere are 2 other local schools that are sorta being considered. Tempted to have her apply to LSU, just to see what they'll offer. Still haven't taken senior pictures, except for the required yearbook ones. So need to get busy with that. Thankful for this thread. Glad to see everyone is moving along well! Best wishes to all our seniors and senior parents!
