Class of 2022- High School Parents

It's the first day of senior year! (Well, sort of!) My daughter's participating in a pharmacy technician program at our career center as her "electives" this year. The career center serves multiple school districts, so the schedules don't always match 100%. Her pharmacy tech program started today, but it's only a half day. She'll take her "core classes" at her high school in the afternoons. Those start Thursday.

Here's wishing everyone a wonderful school year!

My senior started today. Here’s hoping for a semi-normal year for them! They will at least get their first milestone of Senior Sunrise on Friday.

Just checking in with everyone to see where we’re at.. FAFSA? College apps? How is everyone doing? My daughter is just finishing up her application to her first choice school, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona. Should be submitting at the end of the week. Also keeping tabs on school admins who are supposed to be sending her transcripts to her and tracking down those teacher recs! Filling out the FAFSA this week.

Good luck to your DD @MDIME !

My DD summitted her NMF application today, so that's one box checked. Need to start the FAFSA here too. We're going to go visit a school in the PacNW in a couple of weeks; we did some East Coast and West Coast school tours over the summer. Hoping to get the safety schools applied to this month, and then the rest.

Thanks and to you as well! East & West coast — super impressive!! 👍🏼

I got the FAFSA done this weekend. Still can't DS to come up with a list of colleges. They've been in school for almost two months now.

Good job on the FAFSA! He’ll get there re: schools but I get the frustration!

My daughter has most of her common app done. She's finalizing her essay with her english teacher. She thinks she has her list of schools but we still have 2 visits scheduled. She's feeling pretty overwhelmed but hopefully in a couple of weeks things will lighten up.

I'm on the hook for the FAFSA and am not looking forward to it. I have done it for the last 3 years for my son, but it is a task I dread.

In happier news, homecoming was last weekend. The dance was held on the football field. Despite some rain (and it being October in Ohio) my daughter had a wonderful time.

We also got FASFA done this weekend! What a beast; made me want to pull my hair out.

DD has sent in her college applications of the schools she wants to. She has one more she’s considering and since it doesn’t have any application fees, I think she should try. Now she needs to work on applying to scholarships.

I can’t believe how fast this year is already going!

We got the FASFA done and submitted yesterday. My DD kept asking me where I was in the process. I kept making excuses and putting it off. I felt like the kid and she was the parent 😅. Finally got that out of the way. Common App done. Waiting on transcripts to be sent over. We got 2 acceptances already from schools that required her to put in her own grades and later send transcripts.
The stress is piling on and the ‘tude from the senior is REAL on some days. I am proud of myself for keeping my cool MOST of the time😂.

I must have done FAFSA wrong, it was pretty easy. I did have them pull from our tax returns.
For some reason ours kept kicking us out and kept giving me an error message when I got to a certain point. I Kept joking with my daughter that FASFA must be linked to Facebook, WhatsApp,and Instagram since it was acting wonky. I was relieved to finally get through it.
ETA: That was the only part that made it frustrating for me.

In years past, I've had trouble with it "bombing" on me, especially during the pull-from-the-IRS section. And, I am never clear on what assets (investments, accounts, etc) have to be included in parent-assets section. It seems like I have to go back and look up that info every year and I'm never 100% sure I'm doing it correctly. Admittedly, finance-related stuff is NOT "my thing." (We've never actually qualified for any federal aid though, so they probably don't care as much whether it's right. Maybe this year will be different since we'll have 2 in school.)

I wouldn't say it's "difficult" so much as frustrating and confusing. I do not enjoy it, that's for sure.

Glad to see re-visit this thread. We are going to try and get FAFSA done asap, before we leave on our trip for Fall break. If not, will do as soon as we get back. I know it'll take time to do. No college apps done yet. We plan to visit 2 in state colleges in the next few weeks, and make some sort of decisions. DD is just overwhelmed I know, (and so are we.) I do think she'll end up at one of the Univ TN schools, but we need to get a move on.

This is my 3rd year doing the FAFSA (daughter is a sophomore, son is a high school senior). I’m that weird person who waits up till midnight on sept 30th and has it done by 1 AM 😂 I can’t use the IRS retrieval thing though because we file paper taxes and last year and this year the IRS hasn’t processed our return yet! Our 2019 taxes didn’t get processed until this spring after we had already filed 2020. I continue to check this years and they still aren’t processed. The govt sure cashed our check right away though 🤣

Sounds like y’all are on the ball!
Common App is complete for the most part, minus the essay. Visiting a couple more schools in the next few weeks. He has his list of schools and is clear on their requirements.
FAFSA account has been created, but deferring to my CPA husband to complete. 😆

My son’s school had homecoming a couple weeks ago and he seemed to have a great time. It was a nice somewhat return to “normalcy.”

Good luck everyone! Hard to believe we are already a couple months into senior year here.

My DD just told me she spoke to her counselor this afternoon. He basically told her that their (counselors) supervisor has not created an account/profile for the class of 22 in the common app and until that is done, transcripts cannot be sent over. He told her it might be a couple of more weeks before that gets done. I find it a little unfair to those kids who wanted to apply early decision or early action and had most of the work done on their end.

My DD is hopeful that she will still make the Nov 1st deadlines.

Argh! I hope it works out. That seems completely unacceptable!

Our school is switching to a new system this year. You used to request transcripts and recommendations and stuff through a system called Naviance (I think it interfaced somehow with the common app) and this year, they're switching to one called SchoolLinks. I am pretty worried that there's going to be a learning curve/growing pains with a new system so I really want my daughter to get her requests in ASAP, too.

Thanks! I think I am going to try and write an email. I will see how she feels about it. She seemed a little embarrassed at first. I will ask her again in a few days. A few other moms also said they would try and reach out to the head counselor via email.

We also use Naviance in our school system. I wonder if in the future they will change it. I hope the change doesn’t set you guys back!
