Class of 2022- High School Parents

So my daughter found out she was waitlisted at UCF. And she is P.O.’d
Now, she has already made her decision to go elsewhere, she’s even paid her tuition and dorm deposit and found a roommate. But when she received the email from UCF, she couldn’t believe it. She has a “super 4.0” GPA, so higher than 4 bc of all of her AP classes. Also is NHS, and multi-sport athlete, hundreds of community service hours. She did not submit her SAT scores. She found out today that a girl in her class who does not take AP classes but does take honors classes was rejected by UCF, also didn’t submit SAT scores. That girl’s boyfriend also takes honors classes but has a worse GPA than her and does zero extracurriculars and he was accepted, but he submitted his dismal (in comparison) SAT scores. 🤷🏻‍♀️. It doesn’t really make sense (we are in a small town in Maine). I found it funny that my daughter was SO personally affronted by the waitlist. Ahh kids, what can you do?

I'm sorry to hear that because I'm sure your daughter would have gotten in with that gpa, had she submitted scores. I believe all public FL colleges require the SAT or ACT. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. My daugther has a 3.8 gpa and a 28 ACT and got into USF with a scholarship, which was very surprising. But your daughter was waitlisted at UCF, with a much higher gpa. I wonder if UCF is harder to get into than USF? Someone itt can probably let us know.

I'm glad your daughter made a decision to go elsewhere. If you're like me you still want her to get into all the colleges she applied to! My daughter got waitlisted at Tulane and Univ of Miami, but wouldn't have chosen them anyway but still a bit bitter. Ha ha ha. Human nature I guess.

You are absolutely correct! I definitely want her to get accepted but her reaction was funny. When she was younger she would go into what we called “little general mode”, stomping around with her eyebrows pulled way down and a tiny little person who would get angry. Well, the little general made an appearance again 😆
I’m not sure why she was Waitlisted, perhaps a combo of no SAT scores, being an out of stater, and being female? Or something else entirely 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm curious, what was the reason she didn't submit her SAT scores? Just because she didn't have to? Presumably they were pretty good. Really none of my business, so feel free not to answer, like I said, I'm just curious.

When we were sorting through our choices, I kept telling myself (and told DS) "whatever choice you make is the right one". Everything will work out. If not, there's also the transfer option.

She did not submit her scores bc they were not great (1260) and definitely not in line with her GPA. Every school she applied to said SAT score submission was optional. Thus that decision. She’s very happy with her first choice school but it’s just the over-achiever in her that wants to be accepted everywhere she applied. Good luck to your son, it sounds like you gave him great advice!

I just want to say I'm really going to miss JimMIA .

Housing opened for first year students today and we’re stuck in the “thinking” loop. I know their system has to be overwhelmed right now, but this is so frustrating! 😭😭😭

I'm waiting to get an exception from student housing, which we had no idea we'd need. My daughter wants to live in an apartment, not the dorms. Ugh I really hope they approve her or we'll have to beg, I guess.

My daughter just received her on campus housing assignment for fall. She is so disappointed! She is in an apartment with 5 other girls. All of the the other roommates are already 19 years old and returning students. All 5 of them are a friend group and requested to be roommates together.

My heart just sank when I saw that. My daughter is going alone and was really hoping that she would be put in a room with other new freshmen. I thought there was a very good chance of that since it is on campus housing.
The fact that they are already all a friend group and returning students makes it super hard and is not was she was envisioning. I'm so bummed! I just needed to vent this somewhere. I did call and the housing office was already closed. I'll call back tomorrow and try and request a room change, but it's probably not likely since they are already 100% full.

Just wanted to give an update on the situation I posted above. My daughter was able to get a room change and is now in a room with other incoming freshman who are coming alone! She is so happy and has already been chatting with the other girls getting to know them. It is such a huge relief.

I'm a bit surprised incoming freshman have room assignments already

Yes, we were too. When we signed up they said they will give out assignments once all beds are spoken for and to expect it around late spring or early summer. We were so surprised to get them in February. There are housing shortages at all the colleges around here, so people are signing up as early as possible. They also made every one pay an an advanced rent payment of $100 in order to keep your housing assignment (in addition to the application fee and deposit) and my daughter got her room change a few days after that was required, so I'm sure it was someone who didn't pay the $100.

How is every one feeling about the actual graduation day looming? We just found out ours will be at 9 am (ugh!) at a stadium 30+ miles away, which will take at least a 45 minute drive at that time a day. Kind of a bummer and not what I was envisioning. We are making the best of it and I am going to book an afternoon tea at a fancy spot for afterward.

Good luck. I think that most universities are pretty strict about freshmen living on campus unless their permanent address is within range to allow them commuter status.

I hope that works out well for your DD.

The school my DD is going to she is required to stay on campus for the first two years. After that I think we are going to buy a very small house and then charge rent for other girls (probably some of her teammates) to stay there. We‘re hoping she can get an internship at a place close to her school (probably the summer before junior year) and this will give her somewhere to live since she won’t be coming home.

She applied to ASU because they are specifically lenient about this. This kind of came out of nowhere for us. Their language is they "strongly recommend". Many people have received exemptions. I just hope ours comes soon so we can get this crossed off he list.

Our youngest son graduated from ASU last year and lived at Mountaineer Village sophomore through senior years. Great complex on bus route, very responsive management, cleaner, safer than a lot of his friends apartments.

Thank you! We are going out there mid April to look at apartments. I'll add that to the list. Did he like his time at ASU? I am very impressed so far with how organized they are. I love their portal, too. They seem to operate very smoothly.

Loved, loved, LOVED his time there!

Oops! Just realized you're referencing Arizona, NOT App State. Apologies.

So, all the college application announcements have been released, and the decision is…the University of Florida! It really is the best choice for my son academically and financially. It’s a great university. We have family ties to the school. It’s less than 2 hours away. He’ll have friends there. He was accepted into the Freshmen Honors Program which will help provide a smooth start. And it will be very low cost, between school aid, Florida Bright Futures, and Florida Pre-Paid. We’re very excited!

In anticipation of fare hikes, I've already started buying plane tickets home for my daughter. Sept (for her sister's birthday), Thanksgiving, and Christmas! I'm glad I've socked away a lot of miles w/United.

That’s smart! I wish I knew my daughter’s class and test schedule so I could do the same.
