Class of 2022- High School Parents

My daughter just received her on campus housing assignment for fall. She is so disappointed! She is in an apartment with 5 other girls. All of the the other roommates are already 19 years old and returning students. All 5 of them are a friend group and requested to be roommates together.

My heart just sank when I saw that. My daughter is going alone and was really hoping that she would be put in a room with other new freshmen. I thought there was a very good chance of that since it is on campus housing.
The fact that they are already all a friend group and returning students makes it super hard and is not was she was envisioning. I'm so bummed! I just needed to vent this somewhere. I did call and the housing office was already closed. I'll call back tomorrow and try and request a room change, but it's probably not likely since they are already 100% full.

I hope this can get changed :wizard:
Please keep us updated.

I didn’t realize there were schools that did mixed grade rooms/apartments that include freshman. DD’s school has a building that is freshman/sophomore, but they don’t actually share rooms.

I’m so sorry.

That seems really strange and would suck for your DD. My suggestion regarding the bolded... have your DD call. It will be a good lesson on how to solve her own problems. And, there's a good chance the school won't even talk to you.

I agree with this - we have our DD call for almost everything now.
I completely understand why you want to call, and so many times I want to do the same, but it would be beneficial for your DD to try and solve this problem herself.
Keep us posted on how it goes.

Is this a dorm or on campus apartments? The other girls must be sophomores? I'll bet they will move her - there is probably a lot of switching around this early in the process.

This is an on campus apartment/residence hall. They are suites that hold 4, 5, or 6 students with bathrooms in the room. There are both boy and girl rooms in the same hall. Yes, they are sophomores. I am hoping that is the case that they can move her.

Yes, they do include mixed grade rooms. In fact, the person from housing who contacted me said they think it's good thing and can be beneficial.

I normally would've had her call, but she was at work. I was thinking the best thing was to call/email asap, so she could get on the waiting list as quickly as possible in case it was a first come first served situation.

I heard back from housing this morning and they put her on the waitlist to be moved. They were very nice and understanding. Hopefully a spot will open up. The person from housing emailing me actually said that if she can't be moved it can actually be beneficial to be housed with upperclassmen and they can be very helpful. I think it was the combination of all upperclassmen and an already established friend group that made it so she wanted to be moved. It would be hard if you didn't click with anyone and if that happened I could see where you wouldn't feel very welcome in your own house in that situation.

I just want her going away to be the best experience as possible, as I'm sure you can all relate. Thanks for letting me vent and commiserating with me.

I wish her nothing but the best - I hope everything works out well for her :wizard:

I agree that it could be beneficial, and it probably will be. The kids are dealing with SO much that first year that some salty old veteran sophomores might be a Godsend! Kids have a way of making things work.

But it could go the other way as well. I've heard a few horror stories -- but I still think it works out much of the time.

DD's school (UCF in Orlando) has a "roommate-matching" system where the kids fill out questionnaires with likes/dislikes and possible matches are suggested. The kids then contact each other on social media and can learn quite a bit from them.

Of DD's three initial roommates, one will be a roommate throughout college, a second might be, and the third is only not with them because she lives with her boyfriend now. If that ever blows up, she'll come back and will be welcome. None of the girls had ever met prior to opening that dorm door for the first time.

Does anyone besides me like to watch decison videos on youtube? I'm hooked on them. There are already some uploaded for 2022.

My college simulator on collegevine has University of South Carolina as a target, but my daughter just got denied. Weird. I guess nothing is 100%. So many people applying to 20+ colleges I wonder if the colleges are very good at predicting their yield.

Oh, well, it wasn't in her top 4 even.

We used to watch them so much in her junior year. They were so fun to watch. We even joked that we needed to do our own but it never happened. Now we have moved on to watching Move-In day videos ;)

My daughter hasn't looked at her FSU portal yet, but I am on college confidential and there are a lot of kid with stellar credentials being denied. I'm so glad that is no longer her top choice.

Here's one example:

IB Diploma
4.4 weighted
34 ACT

Denied, Offered pathway only.

Some of FSU's Pathways are great options. A good friend's daughter did the first semester abroad Pathway and loved it. She did her first term in Portugal. It was pretty messed up because of Covid, but still worked great for her.

We had a good week. My son was accepted to FSU today with a scholarship. Earlier this week he became a National Merit Finalist. UF announces next Friday, and I think his out of state schools trickle in over the following month. The only bad part was trying to fix something on the CollegeBoard site. I’m not a fan of their site, but their chat support is good.

Denied. She wasn't offered Pathway. It's okay. She has her choice narrowed down to two:

University of Southern Florida (Tampa)
Arizona State

We are visiting both in April and she will make her final decision then. So it's AZ or Florida.

Both are very good schools. We have friends attending both.

Thanks! I looked up the ranking of ASU and it wasn't very high but oh well, if she's happy there, that's all that matters. I'd prefer her in FL because it's closer but her choice.

DD has made a decision! She will be attending her first choice school! She hasn’t even heard from 3 places yet but her first choice is a cut above any of them. Sending tuition and room deposits this weekend. Oh and she’s playing in some of her last high school basketball games. Her team qualified for the tournament and is #3. They face off with their biggest rivals, the #6 team tomorrow night. It’s a one and done tournament so hopefully we will get a few more games. She has played since 3rd grade with the same core group of 6 girls so it’s quite an emotional time here!

One thing I can tell you from both our experience, and our daughter's -- closer is good. You are going to want to visit, she is going to want to come home -- closer is good.

Our DD came home last weekend because she couldn't bear to wait until Spring Break, which starts March 5th. And for her birthday in late March, 4-5 of her friends since Kindergarten are driving up to UCF to visit her. I'm not a fan of staying home for college, but closer is good.

I've got a 2021 high school graduate, but just decided to take a peek at this thread and wanted to say big congrats to your DS! My DS's school has a phenomenal, automatic-merit full ride scholarship (tuition/housing/stipends) for NMFs.
