Clarification: what if I borrow points, but end up cancelling trip well in advance

I'm hoping to book a late Dec 2009 trip.

I have 160 pts (Oct UY). I used 160 banked 2008 points as well as 5 2009 points for a November trip that required 165 points, leaving me with 155 2009 points.

If booking a Dec 2009 trip I anticipate needed 160 points. Given I will only have 155 2009 points, I would have to borrow 5 points from my 2010 use year which I fully understand.

Let's say I do that, but then end up cancelling my Dec 2009 trip before the 30 day cutoff. I would still have the 155 2009 points - as well as the 5 borrowed points from 2010. Would I have to use those 5 points before Oct 2010? Am I right in that I would not be able to put them back into my 2010 point allocation?

Also, would there be any reason why I wouldn't be able to then bank my 155 2009 points into 2010?

Thanks in advance,
Rene

You could bank the 155 points into 2010 but the 5 that you borrowed would have to be used in your 2009 UY or they are lost.

yes....you have to use those 5 pts....cant transfer or bank them.

Thanks - that is what I thought.

Let's say I book and then cancel, and then still have my 155 2009 points as well as the 5 2010 points that I would have to use in the 2009 use year.

If I book a trip later on that say requires 120 pts - could I ask MS to use the 5 2010 borrowed points first (since I'd have to use them before Oct 2010) and then the remaining 115 pts from the 2009 use year?

I know 5 pts isn't a lot to worry about, but just trying to get a sense of what is and what is not allowed.

Yes you would need to make sure they use the banked points first. They are good about it, but sometimes an agent will miss them if you have multiple contracts.

theoretically your 5 2010 borrowed points could be applied to your Nov trip, but they would have to cancel one day, and rebook with those points (if a waitlist or another agent did not grab that open day first)

Yes, if you make another reservation, they would use the borrowed points - but I'd always check to make sure. They are supposed to do that, but it's always best to direct them to do what you really want done.

In the scenario you presented, you could use the 5 borrowed points, another 115 current points (from the 2009 Use Year) and then bank the remaining 40 points from 2009 into your 2010 Use Year - to be used by September 30, 2011.
