Clarification on liquids

Okay, I think I've got this figured out but I haven't flown since the restrictions and I know from my search there are some very flight saavy folks on here.

We are going to ship the big stuff (most notably sunscreen) as we don't usually check luggage on the way down (not taking ME and we've seen LONG lines at baggage claim).

So here's what I want to make sure I understand:

Deodorant solids=okay, don't need to be in the 3-1-1 bag. I would assume that the solid sunscreen I'm taking for when we arrive in case our room isn't ready and we don't want to open our box. It's Neutrogena and it's kind of like a chunk of wax in a deodorant container---does this sound okay? Anyone familiar with this? We're also taking liquid face stuff under 3 oz. in the bag.

Wet wipes (hand wipes)=okay outside of the bag? I read that on one thread. I think I'll ship some down in case...

Daily contact lenses---these come with liquid in them already. As I understand it, since this is a health related item, we can declare it separately from our one allowed bag of liquids? We would do this with these and probably eye drops and gel type decongestants (pills) (or the pills could go in my bag without problem).

Does it sound like I've got the right idea? Do I understand the declaring thing correctly? We're particularly unsure of the individually packed contact lenses.

Thanks!

I have flown a lot lately - and it really depends on the TSA agent checking your bags. Sometimes I've had a couple of items in my purse that I forgot about, like individual contact lenses, eyedrops, or makeup, and they didn't notice. Sometimes they want you to take the darn quart size bag out of your luggage - I don't do that anymore. I just leave it in there, they can see it. I take 15 lenses for each eye next trip - I think I'll pack that separately also (I wear dailies, and if they get uncomfortable in the heat and humidity I'll change them out in the afternoon).

All in all, you definitely are doing exactly what I always do - this is going to be the first time I'm not shipping a box though. I'm trying garden grocer on day 2 when we get into our villa at SSR. We'll have a kitchen, but I want to use that day to take the kids to a theme park, then have it delivered in the evening. And I'll shop for little stuff day before with kids as we got a rental car this time. (I've heard it's a good idea at SSR and got a halfway decent rate).

I think you've planned very well, and the people in the security line appreciate that - some folks don't and it really holds up the line!

Be sure to address your box you're shipping carefully! I did that last 2 trips and it was especially nice as I went to Target and go those nice individual bowls of cereals for under $1, plus sent other snacks, nuts, bars, and some surprises for the kids like glowsticks (yes, they're liquid!).

I agree about the baggage claim line - last trip kids and I had our carry ons packed, DH packs a HUGE suitcase so he checks it! I was livid - took over an hour to check the thing at home, but the worst is waiting about 45 minutes for it at Orlando! The whole time, I'm mumbling my mantra "this is WHY I don't check luggage" He overpacks. I would rather get off the plane and get on with the vacation!

Have a good time!

They DO want the quart size bag out of your carry on, at least everywhere I've flown over the last several months. You can just toss it in the bin with your shoes.

And I totally agree...you can tell who in the security line has thought it out (or been there/done that) and who hasn't... The ones who still fumble with pockets of loose change, forget to take off their shoes, etc. can hold things up sometimes!

I've flown out of TF Green, Logan, Tampa, and Orlando since the quart size baggie rule went into effect. Each and every time, they have asked for the baggie to be taken out of our carryon..every time. I pack all our electronics in one carryon bag, with the video camera on top...for some reason that has had to come out and be wiped down before allowing it to go further. All my cameras, cell phones, batteries, chargers, dd's DVD player, IPod..you get the picture..all goes into the carryon dh has. I have the baggie with our 'liquids/gels' in it. I put it in the same bin as my shoes. If for some reason we need another baggie, my dd has it and puts it in her bin with her shoes.

My DH travels alot and for some reason they always make him put his solid deod. in his qt. bag. So I wouldn't count on it being ok. He doesn't usually travel with that much liquid beside shaving cream kinda stuff so no problem for him to put in bag. (now it's just always in there) I am shipping down a box of stuff including our toothpaste, deod., lotions, sunscreens, clorox wipes, some things just because I'm shipping I might as well make the most of it. More room in carry ons, which is all we'll have. Coming back I'll just check the box and pick up in baggage claim. To long a wait in MCO!

Eeks...that makes me nervous...I'll have to double check my bag and see what's going to fit.

I have never been asked to put my deoderant in the baggie. (And if I was I would probably just ask for a supervisor. I don't tolerate TSA personnel playing "lets make up our own rules" anymore. They want to try to make my life miseable it's a two way street, I have no problems waiting on a supervisor. I also have PRINT OUT of the website in my computer case just to help them remember the rules......)

ok, it says you can buy coffee, soda, water after security, but what about food. We are traveling with an 8 year old autistic daughter. She is a picky eater, but needs to eat at certain times, not sure if the shops would have her special granola bars or her favorite peanut butter crackers (I'm sure they would have candy she would eat, but not a good thing at 6 in the morning). Can I bring a snack for her while we are waiting for the plane or for on the plane?

Food is fine as long as it's not gel/liquid. So granola bars etc are fine. Jello is not good, PB&J is at the descretion of your TSA agent....

Carol, your assertiveness (not sure that's a word, but okay) gives me confidence! We fly out of a little airport and I'm always nervous about this (it moves FASTER with 2-3 times the line at MCO), but I feel better about standing up for myself.

Thanks to everyone else, too, as I think I have a better understanding of what I can bring without causing headaches :headache:

I want to point out that I am VERY polite and calm when I talk to the TSA. I just smile nicely and say "I don't believe that's correct, can I discuss it with your supervisor" Usually they ask me why I don't agree and I say "If I can access my laptop case I have the print out from www.tsa.gov" So far so good.. LOL! (They LOVE to try to take my corkscrew which is allowed!)
