Clarification on Extra Magic Hours

Am I correct in that the Extra Magic Hours are only offered to Disney resort guests? I can see how they enforce the early opening, but how do they enforce the later hours at night? And on the Disney sight it explains Extra Magic Hours means the park will open either an hour earlier or stay open up to 3 hours later. But how do you tell which one it will be?

To get on rides at night during EMHs, you need to have a wristband, which you can only receive by showing your resort key.

You can search the websites to find out which park is which EMH. There is something here about it, and on www.allearsnet.com. Deb Willis' website. Also, search the Disney official website, it's there, too. Just look for park hours and Extra Magic Hours. You can find specifically for the days you will be there.

For the evening events, you must show a Resort ID card to get a wristband. Everyone who wants to stay the extra 3 hours will have to show their ID, I don't think Disney allows one person to get a bunch of bands with ID cards.

The wristbands are given out at a few different stations (which I believe you can find on your park map or just ask the CM's) in each park for evening EMH. To find out if the park has evening or morning EMH just take a look at one of the calendars either on this site or on Deb's site. Also, you should note that not everything is open for EMH only certain rides and shops.

People who aren't staying at Disney resorts aren't kicked out of the EMH park after hours, they're just bored to death so that their only option is to leave. During evening EMH, not only are you not permitted on rides or in attractions without a wristband, you're also not permitted to buy items at shops and restaurants, either. What good is it to stay if all you can do is stand in the street and watch something? I mean, after any parades/fireworks are completed.

I went to buy my son a souvenir at the shop outside Pirates of the Caribbean during EMH. The CM initially said he couldn't sell it to me because it was EMH and I didn't have a wristband, but he just didn't notice my wristband, and when I showed it to him it was like giving the secret handshake or saying the secret password. Only then was I allowed to spend a lot of my money on overpriced imported toys. :rotfl2:

That cracks me up that they won't let you shop. You mean Disney would actually turn down someone buying? :rotfl:

Wristband to shop? That sounds kooky. I bought one of those toy guns at a kiosk right before it closed, in the middle of EMH, and no problem, even though my wristband was firmly hidden under my jacket sleeve. And the stores always stay open an hour after official closing for shopping. If this is a new policy, they'd better be really clear on it and keep it consistant.

One thing that is new: they've closed a loophole. You no longer just show your KTTW card and get a wristband---they are scanning each card into a machine during evening EMH. No using it twice or passing it around to others. No more just flashing a card or two for your whole family as we usually did. Thought it was interesting.

Isn't it a shame that they have to go to so much trouble to keep people honest, it is truly sad.

Okay, I hope this isn't a comment that I am dishonest, because I'm not. To clarify, all I meant is this: in the past it always seemed like a loophole that someone's KTTW card could be passed between people and shown at more than one wristband station. As far as our family goes, we travel with small children, and although they always have their own KTTW card issued, the cm's were always satisfied with us showing cards just for the one or two adults in the wristband line--the kids would get waved through in line with us. The same is true in the morning when entering the parks for EMH then as well. That's all I meant.
