Does anyone have experience walking to the Civitavecchia train station from the ship with rolling luggage? Is this doable? And if I book first class train tickets from Civitavecchia to Florence is there room to have luggage sit for the train ride? We are a family of four and would each have a suitcase and small back pack. The private transfer is quite a bit more and we thought the train ride would be scenic and fun, but I'm unsure about the walk and room for luggage.

I would be shocked if there wasn't plenty of room. It doesn't usually sit with you but in storage locations in the car you are riding in. It doesn't ever have to be out of your site and I suppose, to some degree, it depends on how many others you are sharing your train car with. I took a train from Venice to Rome and and a few days later from Rome to Civitavecchia to get to our ship. It was not a huge walk to the ship from the train station but I'm sure there are rides available if you need one. Transportation in Europe is plentiful and very easy to deal with, not to mention affordable.

I can sort of answer your question in the reverse. Took first class train from Rome to Civitavecchia. We had carry on size which fit in overhead, backpacks stayed with us. Others with large size tucked them between seats. I highly recommend 1st class; not much more expensive than other tickets and I believe you can purchase 3 months in advance on website. That’s when they’ll be cheapest.
As far as the walk: after getting off the train, we walked to an area where we saw many others waiting, thinking this is where the Norwegian shuttle picked up. It wasn’t and we were shuttled again when we got to the area that differentiated each ship. It wasn’t a far drive but walking with luggage might be cumbersome/lengthy; I’m not sure if it’s even allowed. So to answer your question, Disney may provide shuttles away from the ship, at which point you’re on your own. We hired a private car to return us to the airport that morning. There were all sorts of transportation options after disembarking, I’m sure not having something scheduled will get you to the train station or maybe Disney offers it for a cost as well. I watched a lot of YT videos and felt pretty confident so maybe check them out. Hope this helps!

I haven't done the walk to a cruise ship, but I did it to a ferry to Sardegna, and it's SO FAR.....I mean I bet it's at least a half mile, probably more depending on where the ship is.....

If you're on the freccia trains from Florence to Rome, there is space between the backs of the seats of the pods of 4 that face each other (if there are two pods, then there is dead space in between that will probably fit 1 suitcase, MAYBE 2) the backpacks can go in the overheads, but if those dead spaces are taken (more likely if the train doesn't originate in Florence), then your luggage will go at the end of the train car in the luggage storage places. On the train from Roma to Civitavecchia, it is most likely a regionale train, you will just have to make do on where to put luggage, do NOT put it on a seat and take up space that a person could sit (and absolutely do NOT put your feet on seats), there might be space in your row or pods of facing seats, but most likely it will be in the aisle....most likely there will be overhead space for the backpacks....

We hired a private car but I remember saying I would not want to walk it.

We did the same thing and the walk didn't look great if you were hauling lugggage. I recall that it looked like you had to walk a long way and then around a long gated area to circumvent the bay areas the ship was in, to get to the other side of it.

Hiring a driver was relatively cheap for a family of four ($150 each way a couple of years ago), and it was really nice to have someone pick us up at our hotel in the morning and drop us off steps from the boarding area for the ship. It made for pleasant morning - it's a long way from Rome. This was the service we used: https://www.romecabs.com

That said, many in our Facebook group used the train and didn't post anything about it being particularly difficult.

There was a shuttle from the station to the port when our cruise stopped there. I would think it runs on embarkation days as well. It was somewhere between 5 and 10 € per person.
