Cindy Sheehan Arrested at Capitol

Nice to see the venom that Cindy still brings out from the Bush faithful and that Rush and Hannity still have there 30% share of the American public. She's obviously is still striking a nerve. What sad about those who claim her a "nut job" is that outside of her stunt last night, she has a Constitutional right to protest, a right to assembly and maybe, just maybe, has a better hold on what her son's position was on the war before he was killed, even if it doesn't jist with what your take on the war is. You know, our soldiers don't check their brains at the door when they enlist and can have their own opinions, even contradictory ones.

As for her using this as publicity...of course she was! She's a major figure in the anti war movement. Kinda like what Pat Tillman was for the pro-war movement when he died charging the enemy, and...what? He was killed by friendly fire? Oops! Well spin the story that he died bravely...you know, to help recruiting, who cares if its a lie.

What might surprise alot of you who don't go outside of Fox for your news, is that the majority of Americans feel as Cindy does, that the war is going is the wrong direction and feel that Bush is doing a poor job as president. Of course, the truth really doesn't seem all that important to many of you anyways, just as long as you view your boy king in as rosy a scenario as possible, and can sleep at night.

I agree, I could care less what she does.

Man, you guys are so compassionate. I have a friend with two sons in the military who spouts rightwing drivel that I consider to be total nonsense, but I give her a pass just like I do Cindy. I'm a mother and I don't know what I'd do if I were in either of their shoes -- might do or say something that made people think I was crazy.

Right on!! Definately not how a mother should honor her son..

I sleep very good at night knowing, that while Pres. Bush has his faults, the alternatives the Democratic party has offered up would be ten times worse.

As for Ms Sheehan, I have no problem with her protests in general. But in a situation such as last night, you may not have respect for the man, but you dang better well have respect for the office.

Besides, I would have a lot more respect for her if she would reveal the true motives for protest. She is not greiving, she is using her son's death to advance her own political agenda.

I think I'm going to wait til the details come out. If she was able to "sneak in" something as large as a banner, the Secret Service agents who allowed her through should be handed pink slips immediately. I can't beleive that in a time of war, that gallery viewers are not searched before entry.

Secret Service has nothing to do with this. THey aren't even allowed in the Capitol but for the one agent who escorts the President - unarmed. The Capitol Police have juridiction over the Capitol and surrounding area. It's a wonderful way of keeping the balance of power balanced.

Erin :)

Please. I don't ever watch Fox News, not b/c I avoid it but just b/c I don't watch much tv, and when I do watch news it's usually just the local news. She has a Constitutional right to do anything that the Constitution and the laws of America allow her to do - they didn't allow her to do what she did last night, so she was detained, as she should have been for breaking the law. Fox News or not, you can't argue with that. As to her son's opinions, to my knowledge (and I may be wrong) we don't know definitively his opinions on the war, so we shouldn't speculate. However, anyone who signs up for military service voluntarily has to know that there is ALWAYS the potential for being in a war, so IMO if you are opposed to war, you shouldn't be signing up for the military. She is not a "major figure" in the anti-war movement, by any stretch. She is a grieving mother who has tipped over the edge and now thinks she is on a justified crusade to stop this war. I think the prior definitions of "nutbag" are pretty accurate.

And I don't think, despite what any polls might tell you (as the way questions are asked and who they are asked of can skew ANY poll), that the "majority" of Americans feel as Cindy does. There's just no way.

Just curious - if Fox News says the sky is blue, do you think it's red, just b/c they said it wasn't?

::yes:: I have complete sympathy for her loss; however, she's gone way beyond expressing that at this point.

This is a very good post. And she is a mother who I believe has become "lost" after the death of her son. And he, unfortunately, cannot speak for himself, so we don't know what his opinions are/were.

A sad situation, for all concerned.

No, but you had better believe that I damn well go outside and look at it, just to make sure.

This is an increasingly sad situation. I agree that Cindy Sheehan has every right to protest as allowed by law. It is a pity that she and the media have this co-dependency problem going on with neither one realizing that the other is exploiting them. Others have the right to express their opinions about public figures, which includes Cindy Sheehan, since she continues to choose to place herself in the limelight. Dissent and disagreement are both protected rights in America.

Seems she brought it on herself. Apparently, she tried to unfurl a banner that she had snuck in to the Gallery. Which is against the rules of Congress.

:rolleyes2

Do you people ever get it right? Her "banner" was the t-shirt she was wearing that had “2,245 Dead — How Many More??” on it. No banner, it was a t-shirt.

Mrs. Sheehan made one mistake. She should've waited until 10 or 15 minutes into Bush's first 31 minutes of talking about anyone's union, but our own.

This is no different than a two kids going up to their parents and arguing over who started the fight. This only continues as long as both sides let it.

And you would know this because you lost how many sons to the war? I don't think unless one has actaully been through this its fair to say how one would react. JMO.

I would hope to react like the family who sat behind Laura Bush last night. They lost their Marine son in Iraq. I would have acted as that family had it been my DH (who did serve in Iraq). Proud. No way would I disgrace my DH as he was quite proud of what was going on in Iraq during his year.

I am not sure why Cindy was invited as one can almost assume she would try to pull some "antics". Her invitation was "wasted" and could have been enjoyed by so many others.

This is not the first time something like this has happened. Remember the Pennsylvania man named Dave Delp, who, during Clinton's impeachment trial, was removed by the Capitol police from the Senate gallery for wearing a t-shirt that said, "Clinton doesn't inhale, he s**ks."

The Law is the law. In these peoples mind, it may be a true act of civil disobedience, but they must be willing to pay the price of arrest.

One would have to contact California representative Lynn Woolsey's office to find out. It was Rep. Woolsey who gave the invitation to Ms. Sheehan.

Proving that just b/c Fox News says it, doesn't make it biased or untrue. Thank you.

How is she dishonoring her son? How do you all know that he wanted to be there and was all for the war? How do you know that his last thoughts weren't "what the h*ll am I doing here?" You don't. You know, you can join the military, support the country and still not agree with this war.
