Cinderella and others arrested

I love these threads. My company offers a health care plan that I of course pay for and that's how it should be for everybody.

Unions are a plague that have damaged the US for far too long. Look at what they've done to GM and Ford. It's no wonder those two auto makers build most of their vehicles in Canada and Mexico.

I don't mind if other people want to join unions. Personally, I would never do it. What I would spend in union dues I happily put towards my medical insurance. It also ensures the longevity of my employer which of course ensures MY employment.

I always cross picket lines. If the Disneyland Hotel staff goes on strike and Disney has to resort to scabs, you better believe I'll be checking in and tipping big.

Quest! I was wondering when you'd pop in. ;)

BTW, the video in your sig is painful to watch.

Amen.

We're going next month and staying at DH and GC. The protestors will not change anything about that. I thnk it's rotten that they are stealing magic from people who are spending their hard earned money for a relaxing vacation. The union folk need to spend their time doing something more productive - like trying harder to negociate. And being willing to compromise. The economy is REALLY hurting and the tourism industry is one that really gets hit during these times. Be glad there is employment at all. And stop pulling these stunts that alienate the people who ultimately make it possible for your wages to be paid.

I couldn't sit by and watch.

"The kid is fine. It was from AFHV. The dog is playing (albeit roughly) so don't worry. I would never post anything with an attack. I don't want the Pit Bull lovers on the boards to start another crusade."

In case all of you don't know, all the Cinderellas and other face characters at Disneyland are union members. That's right, union bashers; you stand on long lines to get autographs from those whom you despise, union members.

would you like to have to explain to your child why cinderella is being taken away by police????

To answer your question, I would explain that Cinderella is fighting for what is important to her, and believe me, I plan on explaining to my kids that one of the worst things anyone can do is cross a picket line.

To paraphrase the bard, "There are more things in heaven and earth, Quest4fun, than are dreamt of your philosophy."

It's all a matter of opinion. I believe that $200/month for my family is a great deal. I get a decent choice of coverage and co-pays. I would rather have the choice to choose or refuse health care and appreciate my company's efforts to get us the least costly as possible. This ensures that wages can still be competitive and growth remains strong and steady.

I am a firm believer in compensation based upon performance. It doesn't carry the communist belief that everybody gets a boost no matter what. A little competition in the work place is a good thing. People work harder if that hard work is rewarded. If I didn't have to put forth any extra effort to get raises and promotions then of course I'll do the bare minimum. The result of that ideology is a poor product with little return which leads to lack of innovation and the advancement of industry. It's fairly obvious to me why we don't make the strides we used to back in the good old days.

The high costs of unions result in heavier financial burdens of the consumer.

Just one guy's opinion.

This would be a good lesson for your child I think. Here's how I would explain it.

"Cinderella didn't go to college so the best she could do with a High School education (or GED) is sign autographs at Disneyland since she only needs to know how to sign her name. There is no room for advancement and there is little opportunity for performance based compensation. Her union ensures that she is paid for doing the least amount of work required for her pay scale. When she and her co-workers decided that wasn't enough, they decided to disrupt the operations of their employer to get what they want. In essence they threw a tantrum in the hopes of being given money to be quiet. Your mother and father don't get hauled away by police because they finished school and have good jobs that reward hard work with a competitive benefits package and yearly raises and bonuses."

Bring on the hate. :woohoo:

:thumbsup2

There's a chance I might be going to DL in October, and I would definitely still be staying at a Disney hotel without a problem. I wouldn't change plans because of a strike, and I hope no one does.

i don't even have health care coverage (paid for by me or my job) but you don't see me out in the streets dressed up in character costumes trying to ruin hard working people's vacations...also, after reading the msn article, all of the workers are making more money than i am per hour for making beds and washing dishes & i have a college degree so i don't see much cause for their complaints.

I'm in the same boat. I do work full-time, but I have zero benefits and make less than they do. Luckily, my parents have let me come live with them (something I'd do away with if I could) until I go off to grad school (which I will foot the entire cost myself, including application fees which are between $50-100 a pop and which you can't get a loan for at all and thanks to the fact that I was listed as a dependent on my parents' last tax return there's no way I'd qualify for fee waivers), but even then I have to live incredibly frugally because of where I work and live (in San Francisco). Do I complain and protest for more rights? No, I'm glad to have a job when so many others who graduated this past spring (I graduated in May) are still struggling to find even part time work that doesn't involve flipping burgers. While to a certain extent I do understand that it must suck to have benefits taken away from you, pardon me if I don't shed a tear over the fact that they want more money in addition to benefits.

As for the costumes, I've already expressed my distaste before they started getting arrested, but I'm even more disgusted now. How the *beep* do parents explain that to little kids? Princesses and Tinkerbell aren't supposed to break the law and should never be portrayed as doing such. :headache:

I am always amazed at the heartless views of those here when it comes to the well-being of the CMs that make your vacations wonderful memories for you and your families. It truly is a case study of the haves and have ntos in the world.

i wouldn't call them smarter just because they belong to a worker's union which is not available for my job & i wouldn't join it if it was.
They don't have the option to join. If they are hired into their position, they are instantly members of the union.

my personal opinion is that these unions would rather have 1000 people picketing and not working than negotiate a fair settlement for themselves.
With all respect, I am not sure how you can make this conclusion. They are working. They are not on strike. They are protesting. They are still going to work, doing their jobs. They are also in negotiations to work towards a fair settlement. If you read the article, they have been without a contract since February and union reps have sat down to negotiate 11 times.

...this particular group has gone to far, protesting in front of a family tourist destination in character costume. would you like to have to explain to your child why cinderella is being taken away by police????
Why have they gone too far? As I have stated before when this was discussed, I would rather explain to my child that is enjoying 7 glorious days at on a dream vacation why someone's mommy or daddy is fighting for health care than I would like to explain to my own child why I can't make their shivering, fever, and vomiting stop because we can't afford to go to a doctor - even though mommy and daddy go away for 8 hours every day to make sure others have a wonderful vacation.

The workers that are losing a benefit they have previously had have children and families too.

To cross or not to cross is everyone's individual choice, but so is their right to fight for what they need for their families. The fact they they marched right to the park gates tells me that they knew they would get arrested. And I have to say, getting front page news coverage gives their fight the recognition I can only imagine they were hoping to get.

Maybe a guest at the hotel could tell their child, "They are trying to protect their family in the best way they know how. We are very lucky to not have the concerns that they are fighting to protect, muchless the ability to spend thousands of dollars on a fun vacation."

How do you measure good performance? I bet hotel workers are doing things that are much more physically demanding and work just as hard as someone making 100k a year. That "communist" boost, as you call it, only exists because no one cares about minimum wage employees, as this thread clearly shows. But then how can we all make money, if we don't exploit those at the bottom of the barrel? (Yes, they are being exploited)

I know people who work three jobs and still struggle to make ends meet for their family. It's not a simple question of not working hard enough, or just quitting one's job and finding another. Finding a job and even getting an education are not easy things to do.

Compensation is not measured by any standards of performance. If that were the case, I'm sure the janitors at my workplace work harder than anyone here and would make more. It measured by how our society values what you are doing, and if we deem a worker as unskilled labor, we don't care how hard they work. One could be the best housekeeper in all of Anaheim, and he/she wouldn't be making that much more than minimum wage.

Well said!

I know a number of folks who work for Disney in Anaheim. They're non-union and they all pay a portion of their healthcare (Disney pays the largest part, but not all). So, are these union folks actually fighting so they don't have to pay at all? If so, they should realize there's not going to be a lot of sympathy from other Disney folks who already pay for their healthcare (like most of us do).

It's not actually the face characters on strike - it's the hotel workers. Reading the article, the other CMs at DL have to partially pay for healthcare - it was just the hotel workers who had free healthcare as a benefit.

Haines said the majority of other employees at Disneyland pay for a share of their health plan, even though the resort shoulders about 75 percent of the overall cost. She said it's important to negotiate a contract that's fair to those other unions, too.

This would be a good lesson for your child I think. Here's how I would explain it.

Bring on the hate. :woohoo:

WOW! Do you honestly believe what you have just written?

How about...
"Cinderella is working 3 jobs because she was laid off from her job that she got after working hard for 4 years in college. She and her co-workers work very hard to make others vacations wonderful. She can't afford to give up 1/4 of her pay for benefits that she was getting when she accepted this job.

Your mother and father aren't in the same position because they got lucky and their job did not get cut from their company when the budget cuts came down.

It's important, kids, that we don't make pre-judgments about people based on their work. We don't know their story, all we know is that they are human, just like us."

The problem with their tactics is they are trying to disrupt the vacation of the guests at the DLR. Acting like idiots, parading down the streets with a mariachi band, getting arrested in Disney costumes, and waking up the guests at 6:00 am in the morning is not the right way to negotiate. They need to realize that their union representatives are a bunch of idiots who don't want to meet with Disney management. ;)
