Chronic vomiting in a child

Morning vomiting was one of my middle DS's signs for diabetes- along with wetting the bed and drinking at all times of the day and night- the biggest sign though was the headaches- I hope it all works out- listen to your heart and push the doctors to find a reason for your little guys troubles.

My son and my neice both at about the same age started vomiting for no apparant reason, but have been diagnosed, after ruling out many other things, with GERD (Reflux). For a while, I never knew when my son might just throw up out of the blue, and has done it suddenly in public several times (though none was as bad as when in the Bridal Department in Macy's :scared1: ), but it is now controlled to the point that he no longer takes medication, but is on a prescribed diet.

I hope you find out what is causing it, it can really be a frustrating process.

I hope you have found out why this was happening. I hope all is ok.:grouphug:

Today, my son (4) woke up vomiting again. He wakes up vomiting at least once every two months. Sometimes more than once in a month. Sometimes it lasts all day, sometimes he throws up a few times in the morning and then he is fine.

This has been going on for a few years now. We've taken him to the doc numerous times and they've said that some kids are just "pukers". They just have sensitive stomachs.

So today I took him in and made it very clear that I'm worried and this can't be normal. She took info and we went across the street to the hospital where they did blood tests and x-rays. I also mentioned that he is always thirsty and urinates frequently. Even though he is fully potty trained, he soaks pull-ups at night. I didn't think vomiting was a sign of diabetes but now I see it is. Of course, it doesn't happen constantly so I don't know. I guess we'll find out tomorrow when we get lab results back but it is driving me batty waiting.

Any other parents run across something like this and what was the outcome?

My DD6 was the same way as a preschooler. She was definitely a "puker", still is to some extent. I think any "burpy" type feeling would send her over the edge--I can't even tell you how many times it happened at the dinner table!! We joke that it isn't really a vacation until Annie pukes somewhere;) She also peed a lot, drank a lot, and soaked through pull-ups at night. I had her tested for urinary tract infections and talked to the doctor about diabetes. He wasn't too concerned though. She is now completely normal (other than occassionally throwing up).

I hope the tests come back quickly and clear. Good luck:wizard:

I had all of these symptoms as a child, to the point where teachers brought it up at conferences because I was always using the restroom. Threw up before during and/or after breakfast a few times a month. I still throw up pretty easily. I went to doctors regularly as a child, but they found nothing wrong. Around 10 or 11 years old I started having trouble urinating and would sit on the toilet feeling like I had to go, but could not. If you have ever had a bladder infection, you know the feeling. Mom took me to Yale Med Center for better testing. After many appointments and unpleasant tests, they discovered that I only have one kidney that grew or works. The other never grew and my good one was having trouble keeping up. After a few years of discomfort, my good kidney grew big enough to keep up and works fine. I only feel trouble if I'm not good to my body. I still drink and pee alot, throw up less, but still feel pukey some mornings. Just thought I would tell you in case, because that sounds just like me. Good luck with the blood tests.

Hey thanks for asking! His x-rays & blood tests came back normal. Well, his white count was high but they said he had some sinusitis (which is a trigger for CVS I've since learned). We are basically starting a diary of his episodes to give to the doctor. She is fairly certain he has CVS/abdominal migraines. She had offered to send us to Riley (a children's hospital nearby) for tests but said they won't be fun for him and since other tests came back negative and we have migraines in our family, it stands out to her.

I also feared diabetes but his sugar was fine in the blood test. I found a list of doctors that specialize in CVS and we're going to go from there. I think even with my doctor being aware of what it is...she isn't versed on what we can do about it.

His last episode lasted 2 days which is longer than it ever has before. Usually, it is one day of vomiting every 20 minutes. When I took him into the doctor for the 2nd time, we saw a different doctor and he couldn't even wake Elliot. He was laying on the examination table completely limp.

It is hard to explain but basically, he goes catatonic almost. He sleeps to the point you can't wake him and when he does wake up he isn't "there". He vomits, goes into a deep deep sleep..and cycles from there. Turns white as a sheet, gets dark circles under his eyes. When the episode is over, he is fine for another few months typically...sometimes less.

It is always the same. He has a day where we know it is coming and then it hits.

Anyway, we're onto the problem. I just wish we could stop it and it is frustrating knowing we can't. We have an arsenal of phenegren in the fridge though. I've actually been meaning to ask my doctor if we can't give him the phenegren when we know it is coming to try to avoid the episode completely but that might be wishful thinking.

I totally know how that is. The CVS coma:sad1: It is scary :grouphug: I am glad you are on the right track to finding treatment for Elliot! I've been thinking of you guys.:flower3:

What we call abdominal migraines. Sometimes the healthcare over there scares me! ;)
