christms meal: anybody else want something

For our nuclear family Christmas we're doing fondue. A cheese & a chocolate. For extended family, one did soup & the other is doing traditional but we didn't do traditional Thanksgiving with them.
This is our first year to do fondue so I hope it works. The kids are excited.

last year we had such a fun and relaxing christmas. we stay home and dh's small family comes, and there are lots of h'ors d'oeuvres and munchies throughout the day. I remember thinking that it would be great NOT to have the big meal as well. I mentioned it to dh this year and he was horrified...he definitely wants the big meal.

that said, I do make it easy on us. we do a beef tenderloin, so very easy to prepare, and baked potatoes, asparagus, rolls, salad. all very easy to prepare, so not a ton of work involved. but if I had my way, it would just be a munchies only kind of day. :)

I am doing these potatoes. They are like baked but I can do them early.

Hash Brown Casserole

Ingredients
• 1 2-pound package frozen hash brown potatoes, thawed
• 1/2 cup melted margarine or butter 1/2 cup chopped onion
• 1 can cream of chicken soup
• 1/4 tsp. pepper
• 1 pint sour cream
• 2 cups shredded cheese
• 2 cups crushed cornflakes
• 1/4 cup melted margarine or butter

Method
Cook onion in the 1/2 cup melted margarine. Stir in potatoes, soup, pepper, sour cream, and cheese. Bake in a greased 9 X 13 pan at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes or until bubbly and brown. Combine cornflake crumbs and the 1/4 cup melted margarine. Sprinkle over casserole; bake 10 minutes more.

We usually have prime rib or beef tenderloin but this year we are doing fondue-cheese for appetizers, oils for main course and chocolate for dessert.

We never have turkey on Christmas

Every year it's different

ham
fresh ham
prime rib
beef wellington
loin of pork

this year we're just having some appetizers and then baked ziti with meatballs and sausage and a salad.

We usually just grill steaks but this year my dd asked if we could have ham.
I'm liking the pizza idea though :thumbsup2

After years of the same old holiday meals, last year we decided to go the untraditional route. Last year was pizza (5 different kinds) along with stuffed shells and homemade mac and cheese. We also served salad and did cookies for dessert.

This year it is Bagna Calda, an Italian style fondue with meats and vegetables, along with rice pilaf and french bread. Dessert will be cookies and cake.

Christmas Eve at my Dad's we do a Mexican potluck. Tamales, rice, beans, enchiladas, and rellanos. You name it! Once they switched to a prime rib and everyone complained lol!! It is more like a Christmas party with both my dad side, my step moms side and tons of friends so we graze all night!!

Christmas dinner at my moms is always some kind of Italian. Lasagna, spaghetti or stuffed shells.

DF's family is like having Thanksgiving over on Xmas.

My family is definitely more casual. Hot sandwiches, chicken wings, cheesy potatoes (miss those - darn allergies), different side dishes, desserts. More of a snacking meal really. Everyone is normally tired of traditional meals by this point.

One year on New Years we did the various soups - that was fun and everyone enjoyed the options :thumbsup2

We prefer to have Chinese or Mexican--Chinese is takeout but when we do Mexican we do homemade.

Christmas so different from Thanksgiving now. We have ham, mac and cheese, chitterlings, Cole slaw and collard greens. Assorted desserts, Assorted mixed drinks. Go lighted on the mixed drinks or end pass out on the floor. LOL:rolleyes1:rolleyes1

I work for a church (= work on Christmas Eve) so we insitituted "junk food dinner"- frozen pizzas, potato skins, mozzarella sticks- the kids pick it all out and it's a huge treat for them. Once we get home, we pop it in the oven and watch Christmas specials.

Formerly, Christmas Eve dinner was lasagna, salad, etc.

Christmas dinner is baked ham and all the fixings. I love the idea of doing fondue for Christmas dinner. My dad is working, though, and so we're planning to bring him a plate. Kind of hard to do with fondue. Maybe for New Years Day (which will be our family Christmas). :thumbsup2

i know my mom is ham and mashed potatoes because she let DD decide (we'll also be celebrating her birthday). i have no idea what MIL will have the day after Christmas, when we celebrate with her.

we are having both sets of our parents and my sister over on Christmas day. but we are having sandwiches, potato salad, pasta salad, etc. i am not spending Christmas day in the kitchen.

Thanksgiving = Turkey
Christmas Eve= Fondue
Christmas Day= Prime Rib
New Year's Day= Ham

A huge pot of seafood gumbo, fresh homemade bread, a green salad and a potato salad. Yummy! THAT is what I'd like to have. What we are actually having is a replica of Thanksgiving. YUCK! I don't really like the Thanksgiving meal on Thanksgiving. I love turkey, but all the other stuff...no thanks!

Instead we will make a huge turkey and sausage gumbo for New Years Day.

We just eat appetizers all day long. I think I was in my 20's before I realized that some families had Christmas dinner. :confused3

We are having:

Gawumpki
Veggie Lasagna (Stouffers)
Cheese Fondue w/ veggies, grapes, and breads to dip
Shrimp Cocktail
Other appetizers

I do not want to be a slave in my kitchen on Christmas day. I will heat something up, cut up veggies and bread early in the day, but that's it. I don't want to work hard in the kitchen on Christmas day.

After TG we're all turkey'd out and C'mas dessert baked out , hense C'mas day is a laid back enjoyable type day with lots of left overs ;). Our 4 adult kids take turns hosting TG, so I usually host C'mas eve :goodvibes. This year with all the kids and grands being home it'll be 20-25'ish and I'm doing eeaassyyy buffet style: pot of BBQ, meat balls, asst. finger foods, pot salad, slaw, deviled eggs, pineapple cheese ball, and the kids always bring lots of their tasty contributions. On C'mas day we'll visit my Mom and enjoy munching on her yummy stuffed ham. :)

Please share the recipe for the Pineapple cheese ball.

We have ham...every.single.year. :headache:

This year, we decided to grill strip steaks and have shrimp cocktail :thumbsup2 It's just the four of us and my dad, so I don't need a lot of food.

Still looking for a potato dish to go with the steak, but that is another post! ;)

Mashed potatoes with frozen (thawed) chopped spinach and york horseradish cheese in it-YUM!

On Christmas Day, we're having chicken pie, peas, mashed taters, a green salad and pie. Oh- and peel and eat shrimp coctail for an appetizer.

Christmas meal #2 on the 26th is lasagna, garlic bread, salad and cookies or pie.

Did ham last weekend and had two turkeys for Thanksgiving so we're not doing that.
