christms meal: anybody else want something

My BIL always hosts Christmas Eve - we have a 5pm children's mass at church that always takes forever (forgive me ;)), then we head to his house for pizza, salads, cake and lots of beverages. We open gifts from the family then. Christmas day is at SIL's, and it's always a mish mash of whatever people offer to bring. This year I'm bringing a jalapeno popper dip, mostacholi, homemade banana cream pies, and a cheesecake. There will also be ham, garlic bread. baked beans, cheesy potatoes, and deviled eggs. Normally the dish that people are "known for" is what gets brought...there's never a set menu, and it's definitely not a put together meal...but everything tastes great and it's a wonderful, relaxing day.

We head out of town the day after Christmas every year to celebrate with my family (300 miles north of here) and start the eating fiesta over again.

Are you the poster that is doing oil too? Tell me about that please.

We will probably do one oil, seasoned with some type of seasoning. I have some blends from Penzey's that we like. I will do another that is either a broth with wine or oil with wine. I was going to look up some options. I often marinate our beef in soy sauce or something and we will also have shrimp. We will use the oils to cook potatoes and vegetables too. It's Christmas, I don't care about "healthy" for this meal :lmao:.

On Christmas Eve, we go to both DH's parents' house & my parents' house & eat both places... fun, fun, fun! ;)

Some years, the timing is "off" (meaning WAY too close together), but, this year, I think it's going to work a little better...

Lunch (brunch?) at the inlaws' is at 12:00 pm - I don't know what she's serving. I'm bringing a strawberry pretzel jello salad.

We're supposed to be at my parents' at 4:00 pm, but I don't think we'll eat until probably around 5:00 pm. Mom bought a Honey Baked ham & turkey & is also making a hash brown casserole, baked beans, green beans, & a sweet potato casserole, fruit salad, & a chocolate cherry cake for dessert. I'm bringing another strawberry pretzel jello salad & pumpkin spice tartlets.

I host Christmas Day dinner at our house & invite my parents & DH's parents. In the past, we've done a repeat of Thanksgiving, but, last year, I decided I wanted to try something different for Christmas. So, last Christmas, we had a crown rib roast w/ a sausage rice stuffing, bacon wrapped green beans, sweet potato souffle, cream cheese mashed potatoes, & honey mustard glazed carrots along w/ appetizers & desserts. I was exhausted! DH & I spent ALL day in the kitchen, &, basically, it turned into another repeat of Thanksgiving - just different meat.

This year, my plan is to NOT spend the day in the kitchen. Hopefully, it works! Right now, I'm doing prosciutto wrapped pears & red pepper crostini (appetizers), sweet potato & rosemary soup, Saltwater Cowboy salad, lasagna, & green bean almondine. For dessert, we're having chocolate espresso cheesecake w/ ganache, gingerbread trifle, coconut cake, & assorted cookies.

NYE & Day vary.

We usually do a Thanksgiving repeat. This year the kids begged for something different. So we are doing the "carnivores" platter. Ribs, steak, hotdogs, hamburgers etc.....It's definitely not traditional, but it sounds good right now and the kids are not huge turkey people.

I'll be needing the recipes for these please.:goodvibes

My pleasure!

The brie and red pepper jelly cups couldn't be easier. Take the mini phyllo cups, and put in some crunched-up ginger snap cookies. Then a little slice of brie, and then a spoonful of hot pepper jelly. Bake on a cookie sheet at 350 for 8-10 minutes. SO delicious!!

Here's the French Onion Soup Stuffed Mushrooms recipe. Wait until you see 'em!

You know what's funny? All sides of our family do Christmas almost the exact same way. His side and my side. It's always a traditional heavy meal, served between 1-2pm on Christmas Day. Turkey is typically the center, though sometimes a ham shows up. Lots of casseroles alongside it.

We go to his dad's side of the family first then drive to my dad's side of the family. Both menus are almost the same - though my family serves alcohol so it's more fun  (I kid, I kid!)

I have no involvement in the meal selection so I get no input. If I did, it would be different than turkey but until I have input, I just show up and eat :thumbsup2

(Christmas Eve is whatever fast food we can find open on the way from church to my mom's family - they just do desserts there.)
