Christmas trees--artificial or real?

Do you prefer an artificial Christmas tree, or a real one?

  • Nothing beats having a real tree in our house at Christmas, and I don't mind the extra work.

  • Although I like real trees, they are too much work so we have artificial.

Just curious how many people prefer artificial trees and how many like real ones.

Personally, I much prefer real ones, although I grew up having an artificial one. I actually have fond memories of separating all the branches into color-coded piles, inserting them into the trunk, then adjusting the branches to make it look perfect!

Right now though, my dh and I love the whole adventure of going to a tree farm and picking out the perfect tree and having the pine smell in our house. (It is a pain to remember to water it though, and stabilizing it in the stand is no picnic, either!)

We bought a tree last year with the lights already strung on...it was great to not have to deal with the lights.

I went and bought a Yankee Candle "Christmas wreath" and it makes the house smell great!

Pre-lit artificial.

so worth the price tag...love it

Well, when we had a tree in my house growing up, it was almost always a flocked tree. I LOVE those, but we cannot afford one in our own home.

DH and I bought our house last year and the day after Christmas we bought 2 artificial, prelit trees for $17 each. We then went over to Target to get Christmas ornaments on sale:)

We will probably use these trees (one upstairs/one downstairs) for quite some time--until we can afford a flocked tree anyway:)

Not just one, but two real trees. I couldn't do anything but. I love the entire process in getting the tree from the cold evening picking it, to the lights and decorations, to the smell, to the vacuuming of needles... the whole 9 yards!

I get a real log and stick fake branches in it
Covers both bases

Artificial. Hubby is allergic to real trees.

I prefer real trees, but honestly, at least in my area, they are so darned ugly and expensive anymore that it's not worth it. It is impossible to find one with a nice shape or smell and then they are around $60. I alternate between a real one and a fake one each year. But the real ones have been so bad, I think I'm giving up on them.

I love real trees. I love watching my DD look over all the trees and making the final decision.

Real trees are pretty but I still prefer our pre-lit artificial tree. My mom and dad had a fake tree for years and then decided to get a real one a few times. My mom always picked out the prettiest trees, I've never had that much luck when I went to look for them. Could be that I just don't have enough patience to look through all of them to see which one I like best. It's easier for me to just get the branches out of the box every year and put it together.

i know people grow trees to be cut down specifically for a decoration at christmas, but this bothers me. i understand they rely on the income this generates. there are so many "life-like" fakes now that serve a wonderful purpose. seems a shame to destroy a beautiful living thing for a short period (very short) of enjoyment. they do smell incredible, however.

I've been living in apartments for the last few years so I broke down and got an artificial tree. They really are much more convenient and we can decorate earlier.

Now that we're in a house, we could get a real tree again. I think that this year, we'll stick with the artifical since we'll be going to WDW 12/18-12/30. That way I won't have to worry about taking it down so early or about a fire hazard while we're gone.

I will only do artificials.

Real are messy, I'm allergic to them (I can't be in the same house with one), they never look perfect, they don't last long, they're expensive, and I don't have anyplace to replant it (I rent in a city)

It bothers me that we cut down all those trees each year and just toss them.

My option is not listed. We have to have an artifical tree because I have an alergy to pine. Every year I would get sick around Christmas and FINALLY my parents figured out why. So the next year we got an artifical tree and I was fine.
