So who gets their tree from a farm?

Is it better than buying fresh cut? How expensive is it? I'm kind of toying with this idea instead of just hitting a tree stand.

Hi
I am in Newport News. Sorry I can't be much help. the only ones that I have near me, are the ones that have been cut all ready.

You can perhaps google Va Christmas tree growers, they list 1 in Suffolk,1 in Isle of Wight. It says the growers name and phone number. Hopefully that will help.

Yeah. i did that already. Helped location wise, not so much with pricing or details. There is 1 in VA Beach that came up and that was right handy, but its a very young farm.

call and ask them, We go every year to a tree farm to cut a tree down. I have been to places that charge per foot and others just charge a flat rate. we are in NJ so pricing is probably different, but I pay anywhere from $30 to $70 for a tree. We are getting our tree today and I will tell you, every year we always get it the first week in Dec and it lasts until the first week of Jan.
It is a fun family tradition. We even bring the dogs with us to pick out a tree!! My girls are now 17, 14 and almost 11 and they ALL still love to go get the tree.

We live in the heart of Christmas tree farms. We actually considered growing them ourselves, but there really is a lot more work to it than people think, lol! Up here there is a lot of competition, so many farms include many family friendly activities as well - a farm store where you can get hot chocolate and cookies, pictures with Santa, hay rides, etc. Prices vary a bit as well.

It is great to cut your own tree because then you know exactly how fresh it is! As kacaju said, it will last a long time.

I hope you can find a farm. It is a great tradition for the Christmas season!

Yeah, i just found a different site than last night which was actually much more helpful than the sites I found last night. I'm trying to talk myself into giving up the tree this year to save money, but then if I can have my tree and save money on a farm that what I want to do. We don't need a big tree and don't have room for 1 anyway.

If we can bring the dog, that would be great. He just loves rides and outtings. We didn't get out with him enough during the summer, it was too hot for him. Now its perfect :lovestruc

I think I'll send some quick emails asking if we can bring Onslow and hope for answers while I'm getting breakfast and ready for the day. Be awhile before I'm ready to head out anywhere anyway.

We are not close to you, but we do get ours from a farm and it is a great experience. We paid $45 for a 7 foot blue spruce. We went early this year due to DH work schedule--got it on Monday. Normally we wouldn't get it until this weekend or possibly next weekend. We take ours down usually the weekend after New Years and have never had trouble with it lasting that long.

The place we go to takes families in a wagon pulled by a big tractor out into the fields that are marked by the type of tree. We look until we find one and then cut it down and then pull it to the main path/dirt road and wait for a tractor to come back for us--we've never waited more than a few minutes. Once we get back to the entrance the workers put it into a machine that shakes all the loose stuff off of it--needles, weeds that were growing up into it, grass that we picked up when dragging it to the main path--and then wraps it up so its bundled and then they help DH put it on top of the car. They also have fresh wreaths, pine boughs for sale and a store with ornaments and giftware type stuff along with a cafe where they give hot chocolate to people buying a tree. We have a great time and take tons of pictures. Its really a great family experience--my girls love it. We don't have a dog, but almost always see people who have them along.

Thanks everybody. NOW I have to actually get DH to decide with me whether to get a tree:rotfl2: We've kind of been on the fence about having a tree at all this year because no one is coming for Christmas. If we were going to visit my parents I'd be less on the fence about it. But I kind of want a tree just for us. Wish we had kids then it would be a no-brainer:rotfl: But its just Dh, me, Onslow and Rally. Rally's a cockatiel.

I know we paid something like 60 bucks last year, and we get small trees cause its a small house. We'll see what happens.

You can't keep them in the house long, but when we were newlyweds we bought trees that were still balled and we planted them in our yards. We no longer live in those houses, but my DUnk lives in a house that has the blue spruce that was our Christmas tree 38 years ago. It's a beautiful tree!

PS. Sometimes nurseries have Alberta spruce trees that are easier to plant. Our DS has one that was a Christmas tree for a grandparent about 10 years ago.

You can't keep them in the house long,

I ALWAYS get my tree from a farm and have it cut the day we pick it out and it ALWAYS lasts a month in my house. As long as you water it and like the tree we got today water it every few hours (I have had to refill it three times already) They can last this long.
