This weekend my daughter and I went to the drugstore to pick up a perscription. It was a life changing drugstore visit, I must say. It taught/reminded me of a lot of things, and I'm vowing now to change how I'm going to look at Chrismtas.
You see, Santa was there. Now, Santa didn't have the nicest suit on, he was even wearing black tennis shoes instead of boots, his beard was obviously fake, and ....Santa was black. My daughter saw him and because he wasn't the Santa we're used to, I thought I should say something, "Look Meg! Someones is dressed up like Santa"
She ignored me. She ran right up to him and hugged him, yelling his name, looking right in his eyes. She talked to him and they looked at toys together and held hands. She sat on his lap and got their picture together.
My 5 year old daughter didn't judge the quality of his clothes, or the color of his skin. She saw a magical man that took time to spend with her. He made her smile, he made her happy, and she couldn't wait to tell her Daddy about it.
From now on.....
~I'm going to see the Santa in everyone, no matter how they look, talk, or dress.
~I'm going to see the Magic in everything.
~Christmas lights aren't uneven or have ugly tape holdling them up, they are a magical and twinkling wonder. (squint your eyes, then they are extra magical!)
~The tree isn't shorter than last year because we couldn't afford it, it is twice the size of my daughter and a mass of memories. It's the most beautiful tree in the world. Just ask my daughter, she'll tell you.
~The presents don't have to look perfect. What makes them special is wrapping them with someone you love and piling them under the tree, looking for ones that for you...and from you. (side lesson, curling ribbon is just as pretty as wire edged fabric ribbon)
~I'm not going to worry over christmas dinners, they are special because they are eaten as a family and fun because it's on the good "china" (even if that is the special from Target!) with the good table cloth and real napkins.
~Sprinkles, sprinkles and more sprinkles on floor, behind the toaster, on the counters, somehow all the way to the carpet, is NOT a problem!! It doesn't take THAT long to clean up, and watching my daughter lean over a tray of spritz, so intent on her job of decorating them, will remain in my heart forever.
~A long ride home because of traffic is more time to listen to Christmas music.
I could go on, but I think I may get in trouble for such a long post so I'll stop
I think when I go home tonight I'm going to bake another batch of oatmeal M&M cookies with my daughter, even if it is messier with her helping. I don't think my daughter will notice I haven't finished the laundry or cleaned up the spare room, but she'll be proud of the cookies and enjoy eating them in front of our beautiful tree (which isn't as tall as last year
