Christmas Rental in OBX? Reccomendations?

Go see the horses in Corolla...don't know if the tours will be running--they were open air-jeeps with one company when we did them in the summer--but if you have a four-wheel drive, you can drive up there yourself.
WELL worth the trip and lots of shells on thoses beaches.
Pick up some of those ad books and they will explain the rules. Don't go near or touch--they are WILD--but DO NOT FEED! A colt died last time I was there because people fed it a carrot or something.
Also, make sure to hit "Duck Donuts" ...the best one is in Duck, but there are now locations all over. I don't even like cake doughnuts and LOVE them!
Have fun...we LOVE OBX!!!

We went there this summer for the first time based on a recommendation from other DISers. Best. Donuts. Ever. We liked them on FB when we got home and they were posting about closing the stores at 3PM on such and such a date and when that got people upset they then corrected their post that the only store that is open year round is the Kitty Hawk store and the other stores were closing for the season at that time on that day.

If your car gets stuck, it is $250 to pull you out. The guides know the signs to find the roving herds.

Agree with above posters about the wild horses of Corolla.....they truly are awesome....research has shown they are descendants of Spanish mustangs who came from shipwrecks in the 1700's along the Carolina coastline. We have driven up the beach to see them many times while staying in Corolla during the summer months. Keep in mind if you do drive onto the beach in the Swan Beach area (which is the area north of Corolla where the horses roam free) you will need to let air out of your tires ....must have a 4 wheel drive vehicle...since the sand in some spots is very deep...and then re-inflate when entering back to the paved road. Also, be prepared for winter weather....we've talked to many locals over the years and have heard it becomes very raw and windy during the winter months...maybe not much snow, but, still cold. As far as a realtor, we have used Village Realty OBX in the past.......it's been about six or seven years since we were there last and I seem to remember we weren't real happy with them our last year....early on they were great, but, I think as they kept growing...services slipped...as is the case many times in the vacation rental industry.

I did an open air tour at the tail end of march. Completely underestimated the biting wind-- it was a little chilly while walking around but vvvvveeeerrrryyy cold In the open jeep with the wind on the beach. Sand was whipping around and it was difficult to keep out heads up to even look for horses while we were on beach. It was brutal! We did get to see some horses when we got off the beach. Was t as romantic as pictured in my head but I was very glad I saw them. Just be prepared for weather, wear sunglasses!
