Christmas. NYE 2006

My family and I were discussing how much fun it would be to spend some time in WDW during the holiday season, possibly New Year's Eve. We can't go this year, so we were thinking about 2006. I've never gone this time of year. How soon can/should I book the hotel? And can I assume that the crowds the week after Christmas, including NYE are insane?

I was thinking of maybe doing a short trip, like 3-4 days. Is this possible with the crowds at this time?
