Christmas for 15 as told by the planner

Got Mickey Mail yesterday!! :goodvibesStill 35 days to go, but we got our ME vouchers. The luggage tags are bright yellow, I think. Now I just need to research where to go and how all those long lines at the airport work. I vaguely remember having to get in line on the right side first at the desks and then get back in the main line for getting into my resort bus line. I wonder if I can do the checking in while DH gets the luggage (the ones we want to keep with us) or if he needs to be with me...

yeah for mickey mail!!

so sorry the dining package for F! didn't come through. Yeah, the later you got to the osborne lights, the better anyhow- go right before closing and it is a little slower maybe- at least that is our experience, but that's been in the slower early weeks of December. here's hoping you have a fabulous time without too crazy of crowds- you know what to expect, so you should be just fine!!! :santa:

on ME, can't help there, we haven't used it, but i am sure you can find someone to let you know. i bet DH can get luggage while you wait.

Oh the joys of trying to plan things for other people. My SIL in TX has lost her father and two aunts over the past 3 years with both aunts in the last year. Her mother was just diagnosed with high blood pressure and so can't fly. So, now they are leaving TX to go to her house in NY for Christmas. They are leaving to drive on the 20th, I think, and plan on staying until at least the 26th, which doesn't put them in Florida until the 28th.
At least the BIL in NC has purchased his airline tickets and will arrive on the 27th to MCO at noon. So, we made a back up ADR for the Norway breakfast for Thursday assuming they don't arrive until later Wednesday. At least EP & MK are green parks for Thursday. It's just going to be so hard to enjoy much time together if they don't arrive until Wed and we fly out on Thursday afternoon. And if we don't know far enough in advance which princess breakfast to keep, I'm going to have unwanted charges on my credit card.

We got another Mickey Mail last week :goodvibes the hard luggage tags that are holographic. Now if I can just figure out how to get the plastic strings to loop through themselves so I can attach them. At least I can finally leave suitcases on the guest beds and start filling them with all the stuff in bags taking up space in my closets.
Tonight is swimming for the kids and tomorrow is DS's birthday! :bday: He has a party on Saturday, but hopefully we'll find time soon to get our tree and all the other Christmas decor up. :santa: We built a backyard rink last weekend and it is filling up with snow today.

Oh, and my friend who met me at Disney for both of our first ever trips there (in 2007) just went back again in October. So she had some good tips for me and also sent me the name of someone she knows who works at WDW. I had briefly met him in 2007 and sent him an email and he says it will be crazy that week, but he does some scheduling for EPCOT and may be able to get us FPs for TT or Soarin'... pixiedust: Yeay!

There are only 10 paper rings on the countdown chain on my son's door! He's getting more and more excited. I'm getting more and more stressed thinking of everything that still needs to get done. Who takes a vacation and gets home the night before 13-14 people are going to show up for the weekend?
We also decided to make a backyard rink for the first time this year.
ice_rink.jpg

It's not going too badly, but we've had to add more boards, more plastic, more water, and now that we finally have some thick ice, we're going to get 6-8 more inches of snow tonight! :scared1: The time we take to shovel the rink and shovel the driveway is really taking away from getting the house cleaned and organized. I still have a big tote of ornaments sitting in my living room that are supposed to be on the tree by now, too. :santa:
I have about 3/4 of my Christmas shopping done, but I have only wrapped two things so far. I did get all my cards in the mail! :goodvibes I still need to figure out what's going in stockings so I can pack all that in a suitcase. I haven't physically packed anything yet, though I have a bunch of stuff sitting on the guest bed.
So, anyway, I am trying to work on my notecards so I have a small book I can carry to refer to. I don't know if there are any apps out there for my droid that would do it all for me, but my battery rarely lasts a full day and I would guess I will be using it for other things all day long anyway. I don't think I have made any plan changes other than additional options for the time period (Mon-Wed) of when we don't know when the third family will finally arrive in WDW. I'm going to try to focus on our first 4 days alone and write on my notecards which rides and things we really want to make sure we get done while we are on our own. Thinking about them makes it seem so much more real!
I love reading about everyone who's already there now from the December boards and can't wait to hear their full TRs! I just hope it warms up after next week because I hear they are freezing down there! I really want to leave the single (negative) digits and have it feel warm when we get there! :wizard: :cool1:

I know how you feel, we are getting back the night of the 22nd, then I work the 23rd. It's hard because I know my Christmas decorating has suffered because we've been so busy, but there won't be time after we get back. i am hoping to take care of a few things tomorrow afternoon before work, but I am finishing up my mom's Christmas shopping tomorrow as well. I managed to get a few presents wrapped, and we aren't doing very many so that's a relief.

I wish we could build our own rink in our yard! That sounds awesome!

You are going to have an amazing time! I can't wait to hear all about it!

We didn't get the other set of lights across our gutters before we got all this snow, so it's not happening this year. And now the strand over the garage won't light! I just don't have time to fix any of that stuff, so we will just have to enjoy our neighbors' lights. :santa: I have 14 people coming to the house within hours of us coming home late on the 30th from Disney, so I have to focus on the New Year's events and can't worry too much about Christmas...

Hopefully we'll have time to shovel off our rink this week, but we are supposed to get another 4 -6 inches starting tonight, so that may be another thing we are trying to get done our last day or two before we leave. Skating is one thing we want everyone to be able to do New Year's weekend.

I'm very excited to read a few trip reports of everyone who is coming home this week from Disney. I'm sure we'll all have a great time! pixiedust:
I can't believe I'm in single digits! I did my online check-in yesterday and plan to fax in my room request today! :woohoo:

Whew!!! Well, we made it back safely. It was a tad stressful getting home. We picked one of the latest flights in order to spend maximum time before leaving and knew we would get home around midnight, but MN got several inches of rain which froze and started causing delays. Our layover flight in Chicago ended up being delayed and so we didn't get back home until about 2:30am. My mom was already in town in her tractor trailer that she drives (she got a delivery for Monday so that she could stay all weekend) and the other 13 people started showing up around noon. We got up around 9am, opened Christmas presents, ate breakfast, picked up my mom and tried to find places to stash all the suitcases we didn't have time to unpack. It ended up being a really fun weekend, but I am still recovering!
I have about 8-10 pages of journal writing in a notebook that I plan to start typing in this week, so hopefully I will have the first couple days updated here soon. It was overall a really good trip. I give most of the credit to the touring plans and easyWDW calendar telling me which parks to go to on which days (and our taking breaks at midday when it got busy). The days later in the trip when family showed up and everything started getting pushed back really got slowed down. I think we did about 10 total rides in the last two days after having been able to accomplish that in a matter of hours previously. Oh well. We did just about everything we really wanted to. The kids loved swimming in the pools even when it was cold and we had a great time trying out a bunch of things that were new to us. Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season! :santa: And just let me know if there is anything in particular you are curious about from our trip.

Tues Dec 21
We had just shoveled 6 inches of snow from the driveway (and backyard rink) two days ago and got 6 more yesterday/last night. Woke up at 7am and I showered while Kevin shoveled. Got the kids up and ready. Loaded up the van and left at 9:35am – a little earlier than original plan due to not knowing the road conditions after this latest snowstorm last night. Roads weren’t great in town but were fine overall. Kids watched Peter Pan on the DVD player during the ride. Got to the EZ Air Park at 11am and took the shuttle over to the Minneapolis airport. Made it through security even after forgetting to take out my Ziploc with a few ‘liquids’ in it (Tide pen and diaper rash cream). They didn’t ask about it, but they did make me take the portable dvd player out of the case and send it back through the scanner. Grabbed sandwiches and milk for lunch for $25. Kids played in the play area (truck and airplane play set) while we waited for our flight. As the time got near, I walked over to double check that everything was fine with the flight and found that it was going to be delayed. :headache:
I had been planning on having the kids nap on the plane during the flight because it would be their naptime, but now we were going to be sitting around waiting for the flight all through nap time. We played some cards (the EZ Air Park bus driver had just given us :goodvibes) and the kids did fine waiting. When it came time to board our Southwest flight, I took Claire in the stroller up near the gate so we could pre-board since I have a CARES seat belt that I needed to get set up for her. Then I learned that Southwest boards half their passengers and then does family boarding before boarding the last half. Wonderful. So, I got in and picked a seat in front of someone and installed the seatbelt over her tray table. Hope she didn’t need it! ;)(She never said anything to me.) The first part of the flight was only an hour long (St. Louis), but at least we didn’t need to get off the plane to travel the rest of the way to Orlando. So both kids were still awake, so we moved closer to the front of the plane before everyone else boarded. :thumbsup2 I think Claire finally fell asleep once that flight got in the air. Actually, I think they were both asleep when we landed. We landed in MCO around 8:15pm. I had packed one suitcase with our overnight items, so we had to head to baggage to get that one after buying some food to eat for dinner. What a pain the trams and B side/A side mess is. :headache:
A half hour later, we finally find the Magical Express area. I remember standing in the main line for awhile and then being told you had to check in at the desk on the right back in 2007. So I go directly to the line for the desk and wait 10min for my turn while the kids whine about eating their food. I get to the desk and the lady says, ‘Oh, if you have your ME booklet, you can go right to that other line!’ Fabulous. So we get in the line for All Star resorts and watch tv while still eating our dinner. Then about 10 min later our bus shows up! We toss our yogurt in the trash and get on the bus. Sports is the first stop, luckily. :goodvibes So we go in to the online check-in line. I give her my name and she gets my folder. While she’s checking us in and getting the kids’ buttons, I ask where we were placed. I had faxed in my room request the week before, asking for anything in football and on the first floor. She says we are in Basketball and second floor. :sad2: Not good. So I politely ask if there are any openings in the football section. It takes her forever on the computer and she actually has to call someone else to make the change. She says it’s all part of the new system, but it sure is slow. But, she is able to get us into Football on the 3rd floor! :cool1: At least we won’t have people above us making noise even if it means we have to use the elevator 4 times a day. We got settled in our room and hit the hay around 10:30pm. The rest of our luggage showed up around 11:30pm, I think it was…

Great start to the trip!! It's great you were able to get moved to what you wanted!

Hi great start.
I heard about the new check in system.
Each CM is given set amount of rooms and they work with these rooms.
if someone request something different, they have to go to another CM and borrow and beg for one of their rooms. How dumb.

Don't you love Midwestern winters. The only thing I like about it, is the pilots aren't afraid to land in snow. We came home from Phoenix on Christmas Day and it was snowing really hard before Milwaukee. Our pilot came over the loud speaker and told us to all stop having a Buddy Holly moment. He knows how to land in snow. Funny guy.

Hello! And thanks for moving this to the proper forum area!
That really is a terrible check in system. I am surprised they would think that is even remotely efficient.
Ugh. Winter. It is starting to snow again as I type. And we just shoveled off and resurfaced our rink last night! It's supposed to go back down to single digit temps again after the snow stops so we're not going to want to be getting out there to shovel it...
Sounds like a pretty cool pilot. Ours from Chicago came on after we had pulled from the gate and started taxiing and said that the control tower "in their infinite wisdom" was closing off flights anywhere west because of the weather (icy). Then he takes off a minute later anyway! We were thinking we were at the mercy of a pilot going off on his own!
At least we made it back safely.

Planning to get Day 2 typed in later today! :wizard:

Wed Dec 22nd - Didn’t bother asking for a crib last night for our 2 year old. I have no idea where we would have put it if we did. She didn’t want to sleep with her brother the first night, so she slept with me and Dad slept with Charlie. Luckily we were able to get this changed for the rest of the trip as neither adult slept very well. We also didn’t bother to change the alarm clock which was off by a good half hour if not a full 12 hours. We used a phone to set an alarm and got up around 7am. This was going to be one of the warmer days of the trip so we knew we’d swim and shower later. Plus the crowds were only going to get worse every day, so we wanted to spend as much time in Magic Kingdom as possible today (besides break time in the afternoon). So, off to explore the food court.
Some of the food item signs showed a little dining plan icon to let you know what the snack credits were, but it was unclear whether everything else was a counter service (and what else you could get with an entree). I think it took us a couple of days to really maximize our meals (which of course frustrates me as I am trying to hurry to get to the parks in the mornings), but it worked out ok. We had pancakes and bacon with an apple turnover and a bottle of juice for all 4 of us for breakfast. We also bought the refillable mug and filled it with hot cocoa.
Out front we waited about 5 minutes for the MK bus and were at the front gate by 8:30am. :wizard: We did our first Photopass on Main Street. Hopefully I will get the cd ordered soon and be able to load up some of those (pre-ordered it for $99 and have over 200 pics).

Photo0009FiveBySeven.jpg

I remember thinking it wasn’t too crowded this morning, so I was happy about that. All 4 of us got in line for Dumbo right away and waited about 15 minutes to ride.
DSCN2339.JPG

After we walked off, I told Kevin to take the kids to Pooh while I went to Peter Pan to get fast passes. (I'm pretty sure I didn't stutter, but there were plenty of other loud noises around...) I got the fast passes and also got Surprise FastPasses for Philharmagic at the same time! pixiedust: The return times were close to lunchtime, but I figured we could even save them until the afternoon if necessary. So, I ran back to Pooh and tried to get in line to hopefully catch up to my family, but couldn’t see them. At the first turn in line, I jumped out, as I figured maybe they were already in and I could just wait until they got out. I waited. And I waited. And I waited. This would be where I should mention that my husband’s phone didn’t plug in all the way last night and so was dead this morning, and he didn’t have it with him. So I couldn’t call him. After 20 minutes I walked back towards Dumbo where we had parked the stroller and it was still there. So I grabbed it and walked around the carousel to try to find them, and then headed back to Pooh since that’s where I said to meet. Another 10 minutes later they finally walk over towards Pooh and see me. They had gotten in line and ridden Peter Pan while I had gotten the FPs, apparently, and then also rode the carousel. So, now I was really happy… It was time for our breakfast at ‘Ohana and I had ridden one ride. :sad2:

So, before we had left home my son and I had watched all the youtube videos for all the rides he was tall enough for this trip (that he hadn’t ridden in 2007). My husband had ridden Splash and enjoyed it, so after watching the video my son decided he could handle it. Being a warm day (over 70), we stopped at Splash to see if we could get FPs. It hadn’t been two hours since I got our PP FPs, and the time had not yet arrived for it, but we were able to get FPs for Splash! :cool1:
We jumped on the monorail and got off at the Poly. We headed over to ‘Ohana and checked in for our 11:15 ADR around 11am. There were people everywhere, so we figured we had time to kill. Kevin took the kids into the bathroom while I parked the stroller and pulled out the things we would need (cameras, diaper bag). Before I even finished parking the stroller, the buzzer went off in my hand. I turned it in and told them it might be a second…
My husband and I chatted with the man waiting to seat us who was from Germany. Apparently we were supposed to do the ‘Ohana photo before we sat down, but we skipped it knowing we wouldn’t pay for it anyway. We started off with the breads and yummy juice. I tried both breads since we had never eaten here before and liked them, but no one else really cared for them.
I think Pluto and Mickey came by before our food even came out. Mickey saw Charlie’s birthday button and asked how old he was. I had to translate the hand motions, but it was cool to have a little extra interaction.
DSCN2346.JPG
Then the kids received their maracas and marched around a little bit. Claire was a little unsure of this, but really caught on by the time the meal was finished. We all enjoyed the food, but I don’t remember the kids sitting down long enough to eat much of it. I think we only went through one skillet for the 4 of us. After Lilo and Stitch had been around, we started heading out and noticed that no one was at the photopass picture station. So we took our own camera over and took pics of the kids. Someone did come out and take a nice family shot for us, too, and gave us the leis.
DSCN2352.JPG

We headed back to the monorail and rode over to the Grand Floridian to see the tree and gingerbread house.
DSCN2354.JPG

I debated a long while to buy something from the shop in the house, but couldn’t bring myself to shell out the cash. The kids really wanted to ride a boat, so we took the boat back to MK (via the Poly) and then took a bus back to Sports around 1pm.

I think the bus ride back was when a nice gentleman with two boys dug out a Minnie ears from his bag and had his boys give it to Claire. He said they had just found it on a bench with no one around. :lovestruc
DSCN2360.JPG

The kids napped in the room from about 1-3pm while I showered. Then Kevin swam with the kids in the baseball pool for a half hour or so. Bus back to MK wasn’t full, but we didn't stop at Music or Movies. :)
Photo0022FourBySix.jpg

I think we used our 2 Splash FPs first. Kevin stayed with Claire since he had ridden it before and I had put on my prescription patch for motion sickness last night, so I was ready to try it out. There was basically no line, and only 2 other people in our boat. Since I had never ridden, I couldn’t prepare Charlie for the first 3 smaller drops. The one in complete darkness really got him worried and he asked if he could get off. :scared1: So I tried to hug him tight the rest of the way. When we got our pic taken going over the big drop, I was hugging/leaning over him (getting wet while he stayed dry) and he had his hand completely over the center of his face. :lmao: We were both laughing at the bottom and for the next day it was his favorite ride, but later on he waivered on whether he would do it again or not.
IMAG0037.jpg

So then we headed to PP to use our FPs and also grabbed FPs for Pooh. I think this is where we left Charlie’s park ticket because he insisted on helping use the FP machine (and I was busy thinking of what to do next). We rode IASW and ate dinner at the Harbor House (love the fish basket, kids shared a pb&j meal). Then we used our FPs for Philharmagic. Our favorite ride from 2007 was POTC, so we had to do that today. We walked down and rode with little wait around 8pm. :thumbsup2
We sat in Adventureland with popcorn popcorn:: to watch the 9pm parade, which arrived around 9:20 and lasted about 20 minutes. No issues with being crowded, though I wish we had been closer to Fantasyland since we still had Pooh FPs to use. We made our way to Pooh and decided to ride it even though Wishes would be starting soon. It was about 10:05 when we got out of Pooh and so we tried to watch the skies as we walked towards Tomorrowland so we wouldn’t be stuck behind the entire park as everyone tried to leave.
IMAG0150.jpg
We just reached Main St. when it finished, but people weren’t exactly rushing to leave. It was very crowded, but no one trampling or pushing, really. We made it back to our room by 11pm. Kevin was able to get a new KTTW for Charlie at the front desk while we walked back to the room. I took a few minutes to put up the strand of Christmas lights on our little tree we had brought and hang up stockings on the coat hooks. Then we all crashed!
IMAG0058.jpg

Summary of the day:
Rode: Dumbo, Peter Pan (twice for 3 of us), Carousel, Splash Mtn, It’s A Small World, Mickey’s Philharmagic, Pirates Of The Caribbean, Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh; 3 Resorts visited, 1 character meal, 1 pool swam in, 1 parade watched and 1 fireworks show (mostly) watched

Yeay!! :cheer2: I finally got my photopass cd! :yay:
Photo0019FourBySix.jpg

I've updated a couple of pictures in my previous posts and will get going on the next ones finally. I have Day 3 almost ready to go. Hope I didn't lose everyone! Sorry I let real life get in the way for a bit. ;) Getting that last item purchased also means that we can all figure out what we spent on the trip and what we owe each other. :teacher: Time for another spreadsheet. :surfweb:

Animal Kingdom and EPCOT for Le Cellier! :woohoo:

Woke up around 7am. This time we got the chocolate chip pancakes with bacon and a juice and cereal. I think we discovered we could get all that with one counter service credit, which was nice so we could use the other two for lunch and save snacks for anytime. We headed out to the bus stop and rode to AK. That really is a short ride from the All Stars.
Photo0026FourBySix.jpg

We arrived shortly after 8am and headed back to the Safari. It was a 10 minute wait or so. :goodvibes Afterwards we walked the Pangani trail, but weren’t too impressed. We walked back to ITTBAB which had about a 15 minute wait, so we decided to try it. None of us had seen it before, but I had read about the scary parts and so as we sat down I was trying to prep my son for what I had read. He started getting more and more worried, and when Hopper showed up he was on the verge of tears. We were on the end of the row, so we walked out after a whole 5 minutes. Oh well. It was still around 10am, so we headed to Dinoland. We all rode Tricera Top Spin with the two kids in front with only a 5 min wait.
IMAG0156.jpg

I remember enjoying that one after being disappointed having to leave ITTBAB early. :thumbsup2 The boys wanted to do Primeval Whirl, so they got in line for the 25 minute wait while the girls did Tricera Top Spin again. We also snacked a little bit while waiting for the boys. We headed to Flame Tree BBQ for lunch and sat in a shady area for lunch. I think the high was only about 60, so we looked for a sunny spot, but didn’t find any! We finished lunch by noon so we could run to catch the next Nemo show.
We arrived about 15 minutes before showtime and got into the moving line. Several people were not really moving, so we walked past them. The CMs actually ended up cutting off the line about 5 people after us! :cool1: We sat way in the back section, but in the front row along the walkway. It was a great show and an easy exit! We headed out to the bus after some photopass pics at the big Christmas tree and had naptime in our room. We took both kids in the pool together from about 3-3:30 and then grabbed a bus to EPCOT.
Photo0034FourBySix.jpg

Most of the FPs were gone, but Kevin did grab some for Maelstrom while I checked in at the first check in. The CM directed the kids and me down the path where we waited for Kevin before we checked in at the actual restaurant for our 6pm ADR. It was a short wait for our table, but we got a very nice waiter. He explained the meal options very clearly. I really wanted the filet, but also the cheese soup. :confused3:sad2: I got the prime rib so that I could get my soup included with the meal, and Kevin ordered the filet. :worship: I can now say I have tried the soup and filet and I will get the filet if I ever go back. At least I did get a few bites and I got the chocolate moose!
IMAG0047.jpg

I think the kids shared cheese pizza and ice cream. It was after 7 by the time we were finished.
Photo0042FourBySix.jpg

We headed over to Maelstrom and walked right past the 35 minute wait standby line. We rode Gran Fiesta, which only had about a 15 minute wait. I think this is where Claire started getting hooked on ‘boat rides’. She still asks to go on boat rides now that we’re home! We did some more evening pictures and then headed back to the room for bed around 9:30pm.
Photo0046FourBySix.jpg

Summary of the day:
Rode: Safari, ITTBAB (first 5 min), Tricera Top Spin (twice), Primeval Whirl, Nemo show, Maelstrom, Gran Fiesta; walked Pangani trail, 1 pool swam in, and 1 awesome Le Cellier meal

Great report so far! Bummer on the mix up the first day at MK and not getting to ride anything but Dumbo that am.

I am having fun reading your report and hearing what the crowds were like this time of the year. I've only worked during Christmas there (at DHS), so I don't know how crazy it can get as a guest, but I know i saw it was extremely busy when I worked and that was 15 years ago. Sounds like you guys got a lot accomplished considering the crowds!

I'm still here! I have been bad both at reading TR's and posting updates on mine. I'm going to get all caught up today and tomorrow.

Jack freaked out at ITTBAB too. He doesn't like the dark.

I LOVE the mushroom filet at Le Cellier. I think it's the best thing I have ever eaten. The chocolate moose was awesome too!

Yeah, it was annoying for me, but everyone else got 3 more rides in, so it wasn't a total loss.
It was definitely crowded, but we did pretty well getting up early each day to try to avoid that.
