Trip overview: Disney World from Dec. 21 to Dec. 27, 2000. (Six nights, only five full days, but seven days total.)

We stayed at the Walt Disney World Dolphin, visited the parks four days (including Christmas Day) but concentrated on enjoying the decorations and the atmosphere more than getting on a lot of rides, took an Illumination Cruise (Epcot Specialty Cruise) and a Moonlight Firework Cruise (MK Specialty Cruise), did the Fantasmic Dinner Package, ate at Hollywood and Vine (Studios) , Jungle Jim's (offsite) Akershus (Epcot), Rainforest Cafe (AK) and Dolphin Coral Cafe (for buffet breakfast) as well as various counter service places including Cosmic Rays (MK) and The Land food court (Epcot). We had airport pick-up from Tiffany Towncar service and rented a car from National for one day.

People on the trip: My mother (elderly), my brother, my husband and myself (middle-aged), teen daughter and preteen son.

Background: My mother lives in Miami, so we usually stop at Disney when we drive down to visit her in the summer. When my father was living, they often used to join us in Disney for a few days. Back then, the kids were small. We skipped Disney for a couple of years after my father died, and then the kids asked to go again. My mother had always refused to go without my father until this year when she came up with the idea of spending Christmas at Disney. We had mixed feelings because it's a difficult time of the year to travel, we were afraid of the crowds and we also felt that my mom might not be up to it. We were right about all these things, but the trip turned out okay anyway. It helped a lot that we got to stay at a comfortable, centrally located resort like the Dolphin.

Continued in Day 1.

How nice to spend Christmas at Disney with several generations. :) I'm sure you made some wonderful memories.

The fireworks cruises both sound wonderful. This is the first I've heard of an MK fireworks cruise. Is it something new or have I been hiding under a rock? :D

Thanks for sharing your trip with us. :)

Yes, you can have a cruise that takes you to watch the MK fireworks. It used to be you just called and asked for a MK Moonlight Fireworks Cruise, but now they are called "Specialty Cruises" and you reserve them for a certain time, not the fireworks themselves (that is, if they change the fireworks time, it's your tough luck). We were lucky to be among the last to be able to reserve under the old system (the system changed starting Jan 1 2001).

Illuminations cruises also have changed to specialty cruises, but they at least can be scheduled for a specific time (8:30) and you can be reasonably sure to go on them.

WOW! Just finished your trip report! It was wonderful. I think you are right when you say that things are never perfect, but that you had a great time anyway.

I am not sure I have the strength to do what you did. I think the closest I will ever get to Christmas will be Next Dec 7 to 16th!

Thansk for the great trip report!

Thanks Glo. I thought it was crazy to go at these dates, frankly. But we could never do it earlier in Dec. and anyway my mom had her heart set on it.

We probably won't ever do it again, or at least not before we retire. Still, it was fun.

That was fun! I like the trip report and I like the Table of Contents idea. I wish more people used it because it makes it easy to read the reports in order.

Good job!

Thanks Portia. Glad you liked it. I thought with such a long report it would be good to put all the links in one place.

Loved your reports, Emmalyn, and you got them posted so fast! We came home from our trip Dec. 22 and I haven't finished mine yet!

I also really liked the links to each day. I hope others will follow suit.

We can't wait to get back to DISNEY!!!

Thanks Tripmom. I am hoping that the link idea would "inspire" others to follow suit.

As to getting them done quickly, I was feeling too sick to clean house or do any of the other chores that I needed to do, so I just sat down and wrote for a couple of hours. Probably couldn't have done it if I had been healthy. ;)

Emmalyn, Thanks for taking the time to write about your trip. I'm looking forward to reading them.
