Christmas at Universal

Has anyone ever done Universal during Christmas without staying onsite for the FOTL benefit? Are the lines so unmanageable that for my family with kids 5 yrs and 8 yrs that we would be miserable. I can not find any discounts for that time period and I don't know if I can manage the rack rate during CHristmas. I want FOTL, but may have to stay Disney for more reasonable rates.

Any thoughts?
