Our family booked this trip very early in 2021. The more news that came out of Disney during the year, the less excited we were to go. Price hikes, less open, Genie+, angry crowds, short staffed. It all left a bad taste in our mouth. But we figured this may be the last family trip for a long time, we went ahead and decided to go anyway.

What started out as a trip with some trepidation and general blah turned out to be possibly the best Disney trip we've taken. There was intrigue, guest stars, cast member heroics, and an engagement!

The players:
Kevin: That's me. The husband and father
Cat: My wife.
Caitlin: Our oldest daughter (mid-20s)
Chris: Her boyfriend (mid-20s)
Kellianne: Our youngest daughter (21)
Matt: Kellianne's best friend (22)

We are all from Massachusetts. For the 4 core family members, this is our 6th trip, the other 5 happening in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2015 & 2016. So it's been about 5 years since our last trip.

The situation:
My wife and are flying down on December 23rd, landing in Orlando around 12:00pm. We were staying until January 1, flying back home that day (this is important WAY later in this trip report). We are staying at All-Star Music. We will have 3 days to ourselves before the rest of the family arrives.

The 4 "kids" are driving down on December 25th in the afternoon, planning to arrive mid-afternoon on the 26th. They are staying off-site, about 20 minutes away in a timeshare.

I will share Day 1 here, and add to this thread by day. I was really good about documenting our days until about day 7, when I just gave up. So the first part of this trip report will be pretty detailed, while the back half may end up being a bit fuzzy.

Day 1 (Dec 23) - We spent the night at a hotel near the airport. We were able to leave our car there for the duration of the trip at no extra fee. Finally working up a bit of excitement about the trip, we slept little. Up early, and to the airport by 7:00am for a 9:30am flight.

No issues flying. No issues at MCO. Grabbed our luggage and headed to the Magical Express area. Sad that this is the last time we'll be using this. We've used it on all of our past 5 trips. Get to the hotel, check in no issues. Man it felt good to be on a Disney property again. We've spent a few of our last trips at the All-Stars. We are park warriors, so we don't mind staying at a value. The sites and smells and sounds put us right into vacation mode! Getting excited!

We quickly check in, drop our luggage, change into our Disney tourist attire, and head out for Epcot. I had this day fully planned out, since it would be an afternoon and evening in the park. I booked a dinner at Biergarten, someplace we've never eaten before, but were eager to try. We purchased the Processional dinner package, as we are also big fans. Got to Epcot around 4:00. Spaceship Earth is closed, bummer. So we decided to hit Soarin'. Only a 15 minute wait, so why not.

After that we headed over to Germany for dinner. Biergarten is a really cool place! We loved most of the food, and the entertainment was great! We were full, but not stuffed, when we left. We stopped to watch the trains for a bit, then off to France for Remy's. I had purchased it earlier today before we got on on our flight. I just wanted to make sure we got on it, and it fit right in between dinner and the processional. We really liked it! Really cute.

After that it was time to get in line for the processional. Waited about 20 minutes, spoke to a number of others in line about our trips, etc... Entered the theater, and watched the show. Maybe it's because of everything that's been going on lately, but it was pretty emotional actually being there. It was a great show.

Once that was done, we were pretty tired from the long day, and decided not to stay for Harmonious. We would have plenty of time to see it later in the trip. We headed back to the hotel for the night. On the way out we watched Spaceship Earth for about 15 minutes. It's gorgeous! Pictures and videos do not do it justice. The lights are just amazing!

A couple of things we noticed on day one. 1) Almost everyone was following the masking rules. Masks indoors, mostly maskless outdoors. That was a good sign for the week, since we were pretty concerned about COVID, and with Omicron trending up at the time, we were pretty nervous about how the next 10 days were going to go. 2) The park was not busy AT ALL. By the time we left the processional world showcase was almost deserted. It was almost a shame to leave such an empty park, but we were wiped! This would end up being a surprising trend over the next several days. After reading about crowd horror stories from the last week, we were pleasantly surprised.

I'm also following. Surprised by the low crowds, but I suppose most people spend Christmas at home. We had huge crowds the week plus after Thanksgiving.

Sorry everyone! COVID has hit the family (surprisingly NOT from Disney!) so my updates will be coming slow. Thanks for your patience!

Hope you all come out of it okay. We've been fortunate ourselves so far and have avoided it.

Soooooo! A bout of COVID ran through our house, and I got derailed from our trip report. Happy to report that everyone is finally happy and healthy. I'll be continuing our report soon!

BUT, I need to brag a bit first. Our daughter applied to the Disney College Program in January, and she was accepted today!!!!! We're so happy for her. She had a really tough year personally, and to end it with a Disney trip over the holidays reset her life and outlook. And now she's going to be working there! We're all over the moon!!

Wow I'm woefully behind here!!! Ugh, was hoping to complete the report while it was still sort of fresh in my mind, but that ship has sailed!!! I'll do the best I can here.

Day 2 - December 24th

After an amazing first night at Epcot, we crashed hard when we hit our pillows. It was a LONG day including travel.

Today is Christmas Eve (just go with me!). Up bright and early to purchase G+ and book our first LL. I ended up booking Pirates for later in the morning, as I knew we'd be rope dropping a few rides. We'd never rope dropped before, but we decided this trip because of the extra 1 hour in the morning we'd take advantage of it as much as we can. We're normally park warriors anyway, open to close.

I forgot to mention in my first post that we had an Amazon Fresh order delivered last evening. Mostly breakfast stuff, juice, bananas (potassium!) donuts, breakfast bars, etc... So we grabbed our breakfast to go, along with a couple of room brewed Joffery's coffees, and headed out to the bus. We were able to grab the 2nd bus running to MK. Got there in plenty of time to get in early and prep for rope drop.

I have to stop here for a second. Our last trip was Christmas week 2016. Our last day in MK that year, I made an off hand comment to my wife to the effect of "take a good look at the castle, it's the last time you're going to see it". Now I had obviously meant that trip, but she said it felt like I punched her in the stomach. All of a sudden she was in tears at the thought of us leaving, and not knowing if / when she'd see it again. Afterwards at home we'd joke about it here and there, but it still made her sad.

Then 2 years later she ended up with terrible pneumonia and was actually in the hospital for a few days. She also has bad asthma, so it really did a number on her. It took her weeks to recover. The whole time she was in the hospital and even after, the only thing she could think of was that I cursed her and she'd never see the castle again. Fast-forward again to 2019, and we had a 2019 Xmas trip planned, but had to cancel due to some family things. Again, cursed. Then of course 2020 hit. She thought that was it, with her bad asthma she was adamant that she was going to get COVID and never be able to see the castle again.

When we booked this trip she said she would not accept we were going until she actually stood in front of "her" castle. Well, it finally happened today. We walked under the train station, up towards main street, and there it was. She immediately broke down sobbing. We had to stop and pull over so I could hug for for a full minute before she could gain her composure. Watching her actually made me tear up a bit. I was SO happy to be able to get her back here. Her tears would not stop all week, every time we returned to the castle, the waterworks started again.

IMG_7349.JPEGIMG_0429-1.JPEGIMG_7384.JPEGIMG_7935.JPEG

We decided to rope drop 7 Dwarves first. We waited on the Tomorrowland Bridge for about 1/2 hour, then the flood gates opened. We got in line for 7 Dwarves while they were doing test runs. We watched the empty trains roll by for a few minutes. Then the dreaded announcement. 7 Dwarves would not be opening on time. No expected time to open, but they suggested we look for something else to do. About 3/4 of the line decided to stay and wait, and we're glad we did. About 15 minutes later it opened. We waited in line for about 20 minutes, and then we were on. Not bad, glad we waited!

After that we hit Peter Pan with about a 10 minute wait(!) and then Under the Sea. At about that time our Pirate's LL was ready, so we hit there. I also grabbed a Big Thunder LL for after lunch. We got off Pirates, hit Haunted Mansion, Pooh, and Small World before having some lunch. Not bad for a Christmas Eve morning!

Had lunch at Casey's Corner. Our last trip to Disney I had a hot dog at HS that was terrible, so I was a bit leery about hot dogs at Disney again. I'm glad I was wrong! I got the 50th Anniversary dog, and it was a bit crazy. It had funnel cake and strawberry topping. A bit odd, but it was actually good. My wife had the mini-corn dogs and loved hers as well.

IMG_7389.JPEG

I also booked a Space Mountain LL while we ate. After lunch we roamed around a bit, then hit our Big Thunder LL. We face-timed our younger daughter while waiting in line. They were getting ready to leave the next afternoon to drive down to us. She was happy to see us, but bummed we were in line for Big Thunder and she was missing it! We hung up with her as we were loading in to the train. Then on a whim, I decided to face-time her back as we started our ride. I didn't say anything, just pointed the camera forward and let her ride with us! After the ride she was losing her mind, she could not WAIT to get down here with us!

Our Space Mountain LL was ready, so to Tomorrowland we go! I booked Buzz Lightyear LL for a bit later on our way, and then we hit Mickey's Philharmagic. About a 10 minute wait. The upgrade and new scene looked great! And finally off to Buzz Lightyear for the last ride of the day. All in all a great day in the park. It was busy, but we got on plenty of rides, got to walk around and see the sights, and do some people watching.

IMG_7401.JPEGIMG_7399.JPEG

We had a reservation at Boathouse for 7:15pm and decided to do a bit of hotel hopping before we went. We jumped on the monorail, stopped at the Poly for a boozy Dole Whip (my favorite!) and then to the GF to see the tree. Finally to the Contemporary where we caught a bus to Disney Springs.

IMG_7412.JPEGIMG_7933.JPEG

We wandered around Disney Springs for a bit, checking out the shops and whatnot, and then hit Boathouse. Our first time there. We got a table out by the water, and the weather was perfect (it ended up being perfect all week!). We had drinks, I had an Old Fashioned and she got the Ducky Whatever drink that everyone talks about. She didn't care that it was super sweet, she had to get it once and get the duck! LOL

IMG_0528.JPEG

I ordered the crab cake, as I've been dying for a good crab cake for a while. She ordered the steak, and we end up sharing. Really really good food! A few more drinks and it was time to head back to the room. It was getting late, and we planned to rope drop Animal Kingdom the next morning. All in all a great Christmas Eve! Again, crowded, but not insane. Great weather, and manageable crowds... Would it last???

Following. January seems to have been THE month for many of us who avoided covid for the previous 1.75 years, darnit. Glad y'all came through it!

What a great day! You got a lot done but it sounded fairly relaxed. Our last trip with the family was kind of a train wreck. I'm anxious to book another trip with just me and DH!

Day 3 - December 25th

Christmas Day! In 2016 we spent Christmas Day in Disney World as a family. This year is a bit different. My wife and I are in Disney World, and our kids are back home. They will be celebrating Christmas early in the day with extended families, and then packing the car and making the trek down to Florida. For us it's technically our first Christmas without our kids, which was sort of sad in a way, but very exciting as they will be with us soon!

We woke up very early again. We are in Animal Kingdom today, so I purchase our Genie+ and book our first Lightening Lane. We chose Expedition Everest for late morning. The plan is to rope drop Flights of Passage then the Safari, and then head to Everest for our first LL.

Same morning routine as yesterday, which would become routine for most of our trip, except for a couple of days. Grab breakfast to go from the room, and head to the bus. We catch what I think is the 2nd bus to Animal Kingdom. Get there very early. Not a big line at the gate in front of us.

IMG_0536.JPEGIMG_7426.JPEG

We get in the park and head straight towards Pandora. Our first time in Pandora, and it looks amazing! But no time to stop and look around, we'll do that later. Off to Flights. We get in line, and it was a ~30 minute wait. Not bad! I have to say, considering it's "just" a simulator with CGI screens, we were hugely impressed. Extremely immersive, and even the queue kept it interesting. Loved it!

Once we got off, instead of heading to the Safari, for some reason we walked towards Everest. I can't remember why we did it now, but that's a failing memory for you! When we got there, the wait was only 15 minutes, so we decided to jump on. This is one of my favorite rides in all the parks, and was not let down! We got off, and our LL for Everest was up, so we rode it again, this time waiting an extra 5 minutes for a front row. This is the ONLY way to experience this ride!

IMG_7442.JPEG

After leaving Everest, we notice the park still isn't very busy. We went to Dinosaur, and that was only about a 15 minute wait, so we decided to ride as well. This ride is torture on your body, but I love it anyway. Then we walked over to the Safari and got on with a 10 minute wait.

At this point we realized that booking a Genie+ was a bit of a waste, since we've pretty much been able to walk on everything. I went to a guest services table and asked about the possibility of cancelling it for today, citing there was no need for it at the park that day (are we sure it's Christmas? LOL). The cast member was very friendly, and refunded our Genie+ purchases right there. Cool!

We decided to get a lunch at this point (around 11:30ish I think?). Grabbed some food and a drink from Flame Tree and sat down back near the lagoon. We were able to catch Kite Tails while we were eating. While it's certainly not ground breaking, it's a cute show, and nice entertainment during lunch.

We then jumped on the train over to Rafikki. This was our first time there, and it was pretty cool! The CMs there were very knowledgeable, and we spent some time talking with them and petting the animals. It's a nice place to relax, and get some downtime. The train ride is cool too. You get to see some behind the scenes buildings, we even saw a baby rhinoceros in a pen outside one of the buildings.

A quick train ride back to the park proper, and we thought we'd head over to Nomad Lounge and take our chances at a table. Amazingly we walked right in and got a table. We must have spent at least 2 hours there. After hitting a bunch of attractions we didn't feel guilty about relaxing for a couple of hours. We sat outside right near the river, and got to watch a lot of water cavalcades go by. Had a couple of drinks, and I actually dozed off at one point! LOL

IMG_0570.JPEGIMG_7445.JPEGIMG_0623.jpg

By then it was mid-afternoon, and we have dinner reservations at Sanaa, so we decided to ride Everest one more time, because you have to when the crowds are low! Again, waited the extra 5 minutes for a front row, and off we went. After that we walked around for a little more, visiting the animals, etc.... By then it was starting to get dark, so we got to see the park and Pandora briefly lit up, as well as part of the Tree of Life projection show before grabbed a bus to Animal Kingdom.

IMG_7481.JPEG

We had a little time, so we changed into our dining clothes we brought with us, and roamed the hotel for a bit before checking in at Sanaa. Our first time here as well. We of course ordered the bread service. I had read that there is a special dipping sauce you can order with it that's not on the menu, so I asked about it. Our server was happy to provide it with our order. It's SPICY! And served cold, which I was not expecting. But it was excellent, as were all the sauces. I'm not usually a bread guy before dinner, but we literally could not stop eating it, and we finished it all! Dinner was amazing as well. We loved it, and will definitely be returning at some point in the future.

IMG_0676.JPEGIMG_0678.JPEGIMG_0679.JPEG

Checked in with the kids, and they were on their way down. They were driving straight through, so barring any unforeseen incidents we'd see them early afternoon tomorrow. With that we Uber'd back to our hotel and hit the sack, because we had another rope drop day ahead of us!

Just a quick note on our hotel room location. I didn't book a preferred room, and we were WAY in the back of All-Star Music, in Broadway. At first it didn't seem like a big deal, but as the week wore on, that walk back was definitely something we started to dread after getting off the bus!

Just found this today. - Happily following along :santa: reliving my own Christmastime trip from 2018.

Before we actually did it I thought, no way I’m going waste precious park hours hanging at a lounge. I take that back! Definitely part of the experience!
I am a full-throttle, rope-drop, ride every ride, every second of the day type of a person. I have slowed down a bit these days, and one of my favorite memories of DCA from the last decade was just chilling outside the FF&P Café enjoying a breakfast sandwich and an iced mocha, watching people in the Happiest Place on Earth. :hippie:

Of course, that was before record crowds, Covid, and Genie+. ☹️

ETA: ride every E-Ticket ride. 😝

Got to Epcot around 4:00. Spaceship Earth is closed, bummer. So we decided to hit Soarin'. Only a 15 minute wait, so why not.
Just came across your trip report. We were in Epcot same day and hit Spaceship Earth at the start of its downtime, right around 330, so didn't get to ride either. We took a break and I got in line for Soarin' Lightning Lane pass at 345. It took me 45 minutes to get through that line! Did you seriously get through the standby in 15? So insane! Lol.

We went to the 515 processional and had to book it around the lake as we just missed the boat. But did get there barely on time. Was a great show.
