Christmas 2011 shopping

Yesterday I took advantage of the an additional 15% off at Michaels along with 40% off coupon and got my DD a few things. She is not a big toy girl but loves crafts so I got her a binder and some puppy folders (she loves dogs) at GE in the school supply clearance section. I then went to Michaels and got American Girl stickers that has dogs to decorate the binder with. She will have fun decorating the binder and then she can put her art work in the folders so they don't get ruined. She also loves to catch and collect bugs and frogs and they had their summer toys marked 60% off so I got her a small bug catching kit for 80 cents. My dd makes me get real creative each year on her gifts. :goodvibes

Now my middle son has me stumped. He wants a guitar and a lego set but I have no clue what else to get him. He has some special challenges and so whatever he gets has to be really sturdy or he breaks it. I won't get him a video game system because he got one and broke it within 3 months. Legos are great because he can't really break them but he has so many of them. He loves hockey so I will be getting him a jersey. I already have a sweatshirt, t-shirt, and hat of his favorite team. I think I will also get him a gift card to skating rink and new skates. I just don't know what else to do for him and it doesn't help his birthday is Dec. 30th.

My son is similar (although we are giving breakable things a try this year)and also loves Legos and these http://www.magnetixgalore.com/magnetix/ are another favorite. Has your son ever played with these? They are pretty unbreakable to which is a plus.

I got a $10 off a $10 or more purchase in the mail for JC Penney's. I went yesterday and they had a lot of stuff marked down. Anyway, I bought myself a purse, originally $40 on sale for $6.97.

I bought my sister-in-law a purse (originally $60) also for $6.97, and I'll put a gift card for Starbucks inside for Christmas!

I'm going to go back today and get two more purses for my nieces and put the gift card in it for Christmas!

For yesterday's purchases, With the $10 off coupon, I paid $5 for two purses!!!

JC Penney's also had a $15 off coupon in our Sunday paper for purchases over $75, and I bought my DD a Chi hair straightener that was on sale, plus I used the $15 off coupon!!

DD8 has her birthday in November so I'm trying to find things that aren't electronic. She's beginning to be in that in between age between toys and stuff although I'm hoping to push the toys out for another year or two. I saw these dress up doll thingies called Harumika at TRU on clearance and the reviews are pretty good on Amazon. I like the fact that there's no cutting or gluing and at $3-$4 a set I could get her a pretty good assortment for not a lot out of pocket. Does anyone's children have these and are they worth the money?

I'm just starting my Xmas shopping. I don't like to buy too early

The exception to this is my staff.....I buy small things for about 41 people. I shopped clearance last year. I got some nice items at 90% off, so that will help.

I just bought youngest ds (age 14) who is into WWII....a Nazi belt buckle. Not 100% sure its genuine-I'm hoping!!! Thought it would be kind of nifty for him. DH also got ds a backpacking stool which we know he wants.

I've also found dd a cute [air of cupcake earrings. I use Michael's coupons to get her cake decorating items as well.

I'll also probably buy a bunch of gift cards.

I love reading the ideas on this thread.

There is nothing nifty about Nazi stuff. Maybe you should research a bit about WWII yourself and brush up on the Nazi regime before you consider nifty Nazi gifts nestled under your Christmas tree. Instead, keep reading for more inspiration!!!

Starting to pick up things here and there. I am watching for sales on Lego.. and trying to figure out the best storage options for them in ds's small room.

So far for him I picked up the Disney version of CLUE, and 2 science experiment books when we were in Disney last month. I also ordered him the Lego Heroica board game from a TRU sale last month. I just took a guess he would like it. Well he saw the commercial for it this morning and LOVED it.. mentioned how much he would like it several times. So score on that one!:thumbsup2

So far dd wanted a book that I picked up already, and I ordered her a pair of jeans and two sweaters from AE today because I had a code for 25% off and there was free shipping all weekend.

Other than that.. I have nothing else but lists.

I am trying to discipline myself to purchasing one person's gift per paycheck! I get paid once a week. Last week with the deals I got, I was able to finish up both nieces for the price of one!

This weekend I got my dad a photography book he will love, One Planet. On sale at Amazon with free shiping. I'll throw a Starbucks gift card in with that and he's done!

Next I have to tackle my mom and sister...no ideas there!

I already have my mom done, her birthday is in Dec too. I got her a thirty one skirt purse back when they did their online sale and a Mickey polo that she wanted on our recent Disney trip bonus it was on sale.
Took one of my DSis to rainforest for her Dec birthday on our Disney trip(her choice).
I also went to get my niece birthday gift yesterday and try had lalaloospy dolls buy two get one free., so I got her one for her bday, one for her Christmas and another for my other niece for Christmas. :-)
Dh and I are only doing stocking for each other because we got our Christmas on our Disney trip.
1 Dec birthday, 3 kids Christmas, 5 adults Christmas, and dh stocking to go
Ooops and DD christmas
We do a gift exchange on my side for the sisters and broinlaws thankfully for that or I would have a lot more to buy.

Poor choice of words by the PP... but really? WWII-era items are sold to/from military history collectors every day. I'm the granddaughter of Nazi victims - and I can see the difference between interest the era and interest in a set of beliefs. The vast majority of my h.s history students are most interested in learning about WWII than any other part of the course. They can't get enough of the era.

Back to your regularly scheduled thread...

I was going to wait but I somehow got most of my kids stuff for Christmas. I got dd most of the lite sprites set, that is what she really wanted. Just need to get the waterfall and maybe a couple more fairies. Last minute I'll get her some barbie movies for her stocking and a couple more barbies. DS is also almost done. Also last minute I'll be getting him a wii games and a ds game. Dh and a couple other people I will do at the last minute since they are not picky and the sales are good. I just found out I'm pregnant so I reduced the budget a bit. That should keep me from any last minute impulse purchases.

I really like to shop early, but I think my problem with that is I forget I got X amount of things and then come Nov. I shop and then forget about the things I got in August and then I overspend.
Not sure what I am going to do this year, want to keep costs as low as possible without using the credit card. I am using swagbucks and mypoints giftcards (started this last year and it worked well!). And we are using our world points to buy things.

We heading to the World next week--hopefully I can pick up some Christmas gifts then! We aren't doing parks (more info in my Pre-trip) so we should have time for shopping (much to DBF's dismay most likely).

Snowy76, very much what I was going to post. I have a heavy German heritage on my father's side, many of whom were Jewish. I grew up hearing about Jews, Nazis, concentration camps, and the like. I'm not in the least offended by the OP's gift. OTOH, I find the whole thing fascinating. Sad, but fascinating.

It is an extremely interesting era, it is also an event we should LEARN from. Hitler sold himself extremely well, he didn't rise to power by being a blundering idiot. You must study that which you wish to overcome (or prevent.)

It sounds like the OP's son is a collector, it would seem odd to me that he collect from that particular event and have nothing relating to the Nazis in the collection. Hitler, Nazis, the Swastika.......all very relavent to what happened. I don't see anything wrong with it, it isn't like she bought him full Nazi uniform, is indoctrinating him with their beliefs, and teaching him the salute and "Heil Hitler".

To carry on the "regularly scheduled thread" LOL....

I've got an approximate list but only a few things bought.

For YDS, I have a pirate book. Yeah, that's it LOL I do know that I want to get him Spongebob Legos, a Spongebob video game, some new stuff for his bedroom, and some clothing. Beyond that I don't know.

For ODS, I have no idea. None. Nada. This is the first year that I am at a complete loss. His DS is dying, though, and I may get him a 3DS and a game as his gamer friends are all enthused with theirs. Probably the new Halo, he has a LIVE group that he plays with. I know I'll get him a few clothes, he's not much on fashion, though, so probably something practical like new pjs and lounge wear. He refused to wear any of the long sleeve shirts I got him last Christmas (still in the closet with tags...argh...) so I'm going to hit up places like Abercrombie/Hollister and get some good deals on tees. He will likely get new bedroom stuff as the other two are.

For DD, I have an AG school set and a new series of books. She has been wanting a newborn Cabbage Patch doll for over a year, but hasn't found one yet. I found the company website (or should I say patch :rotfl:) and will order her one from there. She is the one who started the whole bedroom thing, she wants her room redone, so she is getting that as well. She's heavily into Monster High so probably the new book(s?) and a couple more dolls in her stocking. Also the DS game that is coming out. We moved the Wii to her room and I may get her Smurf dance, it looks cute. She played Glee at a friend's house this weekend, though, and was saying she wanted that. I don't think that's nearly as cute a Smurfs but it's her present.......:rolleyes1 Also a few clothes and a purse. I already tucked away that elusive silver puffy vest that she wanted so bad last year (and I couldn't find :thumbsup2)

DH is getting $35 in Barnes and Noble gift cards (I cashed in some Mypoints) to use on his eReader. I always get him clothes but he has tons of jeans now. I may just get him a few tee shirts. Big gift? I don't know.

Some of what is on the kids lists will probably end up being bought by the grandparents. The Inlaws don't see them enough to know what they want so they ask for suggestions (usually, I just buy the stuff and they pay me back as MIL can't go out much for health reasons.) My mom sees them a lot but isn't the best at picking out gifts so she usually says "Tell me what to buy them." LOL I really, really want to cut back on what is under the tree. Last year we go everything on their lists and stuff from grandparents was "extra". It's also been like that in years past. Frankly, it's too much "stuff". I love gift giving but overkill is ridiculous. We will likely be out of town over Christmas, as well, so that means gifts need to be small and easy to transport. We have been doing a "group" gift that is usually games like Wii or board games. I think this year we may do one new board game (we are running out of new ones to pick up) and a "gift certificate" for some sort of outing.

You said it well, thank you. He has a great deal of interest in the era, not a specific set of beliefs. The reason I said I hope he thinks it is nifty is because I'm not sure how interested he would be in memorabilia of that type-so far he only has some US medals of that era. The reason I said I hope its authentic is I bought it from Craigslist, from a young man who said his great-grandfather gave it to him. He's kind of a geeky kid, and I hope helping him start collecting will give him an interest that will carry him through adulthood.

Hoping this topic won't highjack the thread!!

Thank you for also clarifying. As I said before, he has some US medals of that era, also some of my grandfathers WWI medals. I am definitely trying to get him interested in collecting, since he is a huge history buff, especially military history. He LOVES the military channel. He gets it honestly, though, my grandpa was a huge Civil War buff, as am I and I was a history major in college!

I found a photo bag I bought for my sister two years ago (I put it away well!

Today I bought gift cards for her family at our scrip table after church and plan to print photos for her bag. I also have stocking stuffers for her family and want to get her box mailed early-she can store it in her basement and its my only out of town box.
