Christians suing for the right to be intolerant

I would tend to agree with you.

I do want to point out though, that "sin" and "rights" are 2 different animals.

From a religious standpoint, I may or may not consider someone's behavior, lifestyle etc., "sinful".

From a civic standpoint, my religious beliefs shouldn't impact on their rights as a citizen.

And I agree with you that that is where the extremely conservative religious folks blur the lines.

FWIW, before someone asks me if my feelings extend to abortion...the answer is yes. I do not personally believe in it. I would and have counseled people against abortion, and have also "put my money where my mouth is" by concretely helping those same people with childcare, finances etc. when they had the children that they didn't abort. I do not demonstrate at abortion clinics because, while it's not a choice I would make, it's not a choice that should be denied to other women. It's also not a judgement I would make toward another woman if she made that choice...I don't live in her life.

I have felt and continue to feel that extremism in either direction is dangerous.

Amazing how I can have the debate all by yself , isn't it??? I've been on the DISboards too long!!!!! ;)

Can I just say, Wow! I applaud your post. I am considered christian but have actually had christian "friends" become not friends because they felt I was not christian enough (I am united meth). You make me sit up and go Wow. I like these boards. I guess I haven't had enough positive experiences with people of christian faiths. I am sort of a live and let live kind of person (although the UM religion isn't quite where I'm comfy yet- what with all the gay ministers not being so tolerated here in the Seattle area) who feels like we are all OK as long as we don't treat other in unkind ways.

Anyway, interesting thread. Now back to reading it . . .

My heritage is American, and I'm proud of it. I want no qualifications.

You wanna call yourself something else, great, have at it. Just don't go pinning it on me.

Here's a geographical/pridinal (not a word but I couldn't think of one meaning 'regarding pride') quandry. Having just moved from Hawaii and being blond-haired, blue eyed and Swedish and Irish, I was an Oregonian when I lived in Oregon, but not a Hawaiian when I live in Hawaii (or on Hawaii as I lived on the island of Hawaii, in the county of Hawaii (most isles of HI are their own county), in the State of Hawaii). So, I was (sort of?) a Swedish Irish Hawaiian American? Nope. Just a haole to some and a person of european descent to others. Japanese Hawaiians are considered Hawaiian. I'm confused.

But, it's all good. I'm a human after all and can either explain my ancestry if asked (unless I'm visiting a country that is upset with our foreign policy today and then I will prob say I'm Canadian cause my FIL is).

Actually, I digress, but DH and I are in Greek classes and we've been told to say we are Canadian while we are in Greece. Nothing against Greeks or Americans, just for safety traveling in public, depending on what's happening in the world when we are there.

A quote from Gandhi:

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”

"While it's not a choice I would make it's not a choice that shoudl be denied to other women" This is absurd logic. Murder is a choise I wouldnt make, and it is NOT a choice that anyone is legally able to make, so why shouldnt this be applied to unborn chidren. We in a civilized society have concluded that murder is unacceptable, abortion IS murder, it is not a choice for anyone to make. The choice is always available in the endless forms of birth control.

The reason her logic isn't absurd is because the state (or country) decides how murder is defined and they have decided murder has nothing to do with abortion (unless a clinic bomber murders someone in an abortion clinic). Not that you are wrong in your opinions, but that's the point: abortion being murder is your opinion, not law; abortion being not a choice for anyone to make is your opinion, not law. You don't have to agree with it, but abortion is legal today.

well, we need to defend ourselves, God isn't going to...

We are without God.

"Whosoever ... abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God." -- 2 John 9

We are all antichrists.

"For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist." -- 2 John 7

We should be shunned. Neither marry nor be friends with us.

"Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? ... Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord." -- 2 Cor.6:14-17

We should be killed.

"If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you ... Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die." -- Dt.13:6-10

OMG you are good. :lmao: I once saw a good West Wing where Bartlett quoted the bible like this. Loved it!

The day I say I'm Canadian is the day I move to Canada.

And IMHO, Sylvester is not without God. Sylvester doesn't believe in God (well, he's not sure), but God believes in Sylvester. :)

This is what I read that I did not like " With her lawsuit, the 22-year-old student joins a growing campaign to force public schools, state colleges and private workplaces to eliminate policies protecting gays and lesbians from harassment. "

So this 22-year-old girl believes that gay people should be harassed ??!! Now I am a guy and I am not gay, but gay people have rights and I will defend their rights. Freedom of speech does not mean christains can go around harassing people.

If a christain sees someone wearing an inverted cross and an inverted pentagram and a shirt that says " Satan is God, Jesus is dead " well that christian can't go up to that person and start harassing him/her. I am all for christians having rights, but that does not mean they are free to harass people.

He also believed a 600 year old man could round up 2 of every creature and repopulate the earth with them, after they spent 40 days on a ship with one 18 inch window for ventilation.

With God, anything is possible!

(Although the animals did their own repopulating.) ;)

i see nothing wrong with this story! Here's my take: God is omnipotent! So, nothing is impossible for him.

And, again, the numbers are representative.

But if you don't believe that a 600 year old man could round up 2 of every creature and sail in an arc without ventilation, I'll respect your viewpoint.

...and continue to pray for your soul! :) ;) :goodvibes

it must be, he created plants a day before the sun, so the whole photosynthesis 'theory' must have gone out the window that day. ;)

Oh, geez. Should I take that as a joke, or that you are offended, or what?

I'm very proud to be an American. Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie, and Chevrolet!

I wouldn't hide it for any reason at all.

If she'd said that people had told her to pretend she was from Mexico, I'd have said the same thing, only using Mexico. And I adore Mexico.
