This is why I don't want the government's hand in every aspect of our lives.
I think that, deep down, everyone is on the same page. Yes, who wants government interfering with their lives?
But let's be careful. We have already seen what government neglect can do. There used to be no SEC. Then the Great Depression hit and it became a necessary tool. Don't want government telling business what to do? Fine, but now we have nationalized the banking industry. Something unthinkable a couple of months ago. Not proposed by some kooky Russian idealist, but by a Republican Secretary of the Treasury. And for those of you who bristle at a Government taking over our healthcare.... well, it's reasonable to expect that could be next.
We need a CAN-DO government. One that looks out for our best interest. This is an active government with their fingers in a lot pies, because the alternative is government takeover when they have the whole hand in the pie.
I have seen places that have 'do-nothing' governments. These are very dark places you don't want to live.
I always find it interesting to talk about taking government out of people's lives. Many of the ideas of the Libertarians are very attractive. As long as you realize that kind of society is very different than the one in which we live today. It is, in fact, a foreign idea, and I am not sure that there is a successful society on Earth right now which is operated in such a manner.
So I am willing to discuss the idea that government interference is toxic, but I am not sure what a society in this century would look like based upon that idea.
