This is the first year we have flown Delta Economy. I checked in as soon as the window opened and they have separated my DH and I with only a handful of other seats available (none together). Not sure if all the other seats are just blacked out from us because we're economy?

Has anyone else experienced this or had any luck in trying to change it once you get to the gate?

You are flying tomorrow? You have the fare where you can't make seat selections until you checkin? I wouldn't count on getting moved. A local sportscaster was talking about his flight yesterday on Delta and he got bumped, all their flights were overbooked due to spring break.

Sounds like you purchased the new restricted fares. Under the restrictions you pretty much get the leftover seats.

you MIGHT get lucky if they upgrade some passengers at the gate. Show up early, ask nicely and cross your fingers.

Actually - "you have separated" yourself and your husband by not purchasing seats together when booking. When you wait to book your seat at check in (no fee) unfortunately you get what is left after those who have paid for seats have chosen. I would be prepared to sit apart for the flight and if sitting together is important I would take a look at your return flight and consider paying for seats now if you can find seats together on that flight.

Did you buy your tickets through a different website like Expedia etc? They do not sit groups together and so my bro learned that the hard way. You always have to go in and choose your own seats to try to get seats together. We are flying tomorrow night and were able to get 3 row seats and 1 across the aisle for our party of 4.

With this low fare type, you don't have the option to purchase or select seats in advance.

Basic Economy Fare Features

Basic Economy (E booking class) is a value-fare option for price-driven customers. When you purchase Basic Economy, you typically will enjoy our lowest fare, but seats will be assigned at check-in and you will not be able to change or refund your ticket after the Risk Free Cancellation period. Additionally, you will not be eligible for: paid or complimentary upgrades; paid, complimentary or discounted Delta Comfort+™; paid or complimentary Preferred Seats; or same-day confirmed or same-day standby travel changes, regardless of Medallion or other elite status, for flights flown on or after February 1, 2015.

Advance seat selection

Advance seat selection is not available with Basic Economy fares. Seat assignments will be auto-assigned for Basic Economy fare holders during check in.

Child FaresDelta does not offer discounted-infant or -child fares for travel within the U.S. Learn more about child ticketing needs.

Our experience with Delta economy is one way they assigned seats together at online checkin and one way they said seats could not be assigned ahead of time and to check in at the gate. We did check in and ended up in the Comfort seats or whatever they are called. the one where you get free drinks (although we didn't get any) I think its hard to say what can happen

Thank you everyone for your responses. It all worked out great. I asked at the gate if I could switch seats to sit by my DH and she recognized my name and handed me a new boarding pass for my DH, said she had just finished doing it. I also noticed that she called up several couples or families after that, maybe doing the same thing. And FYI this was a full flight and they were asking for volunteers to check their carry on which we gladly did. :) :-)
