Chocolate Nilla Waffers?

I found an AWESOME trifle recipe in THIS MONTHS issue of Better Homes & Gardens, I believe. The main ingredient? Chocolate Nilla Waffers!

I tried Walmart, Meijer, Kroger, Target... Nobody seems to sell them anymore!

Have YOU seen them anywhere recently? Or, can you think of a good substitute?

It doesn't look like they make them any more - they don't show up on the Nabisco site. I'd probably substitute Nabisco's Famous Chocolate Wafers, but I notice those don't show up on the site, either. If anyone still makes chocolate graham crackers, those might work.

I remember having them and they weren't very chocolaty. perhaps you could just use the reg vanilla wafers and it would just be a tad less chocolate. Kinda like when you have a chocolate cream pie in a graham cracker crust vs when it is in a chocolate cookie crumb crust it is still good either way.

I can get them still at our grocery stores. They are usually near the specialty cookies and either on the top top top of the aisle or bottom!

I have found they are really expensive. You can purchase a store brand oreo and crush the outsides to get the closest consistency and taste (they are a darker chocolate than other cookies)

I used to be able to also find them under a generic version at the $1.00 store.

And if all else fails, just walk up and down the ethnic aisle in your largest grocery store, many imports are great places to find lost treasures that you used to buy.

I'll keep looking... And I'll email BH&G... Maybe they have a suggestion. (Their R&D department is apparently on their toes! )
