childs passport help.

i am currently looking after my partners sisters child for 1 year due to her being in prison. we need to apply for passort for him so i can take him to spain. does anyone know wether i can fill in all the info or will i have to travel to her prision 50 miles away to get her to sign. still waiting for appication through post..????

I don't have the form in front of me but I filled one in for my 4 month old at the weekend, I think as far as I can remember the form asks you to give your details as the person filling in the form and you have to say what your relationship is to the child, then you have to put your passport number on te form too. It might be worth phoning the Passport office just to check.

It does say you will be transferred to your local passport office so it doesn't suggest an automated line. I know when I have called in the past with a query I've always spoken to a real person

thanks for replying, just being phoning, they are all automated info numbers at £1.50 a minute.(rip off) listen to this and that options. lol

i have both parents dates of birth etc they have never had passports themselves.

i have signed forms to say i am now legal guardian, did you send web link? wilma-bride.

I'm sure that if you've been nominated legal guardian (albeit temporary) then you are free to take him abroad and get his passport. I have several children at the international school here who have legal guardians who have authority to do such things so I can't see it being a problem.

If you are the legal guardian then this is what you would put in the "Relationship to Child" box, I wouldn't have thought that you would have a problem. I agree that the £1.50 a minute is rather steep, so here's what I would do....

Fill the form in the best that you can, use the notes that they send you to help fill in each box - trust me some of it isn't self explainitary then go to your Post Office and get them to do the Passport Checking thing - then you will know if you have done it right - I think you can always pop in and ask them for advice before you fill the form in too. Also the Post Office will stock spare forms so don't worry if you mess it up, just start again - and remember to use BLACK ink - they are very strict on that!!??!!

oh thats great, we go to spian in october, have managed to get him on booking and now i need to sort passport, just me worrying about nothing proberley. just wanted to confirm that i can apply for one, and that it hasnt got to be by parents.( what a traveling trip that would be they are both inside. and we arnt excatly on speaking terms...

oh i forgot that the post office do that service. its only been 1 year since i filled one in for my lastest child. but ive been to bed since. having 3 kids now is a different life. two primary schools 4 miles apart, one play group and housework....im only 26 and feel and sound like my mom.

Kizzy - I know exactly what you mean - I have two kids, a business a house and a husband (he's the hard work! )and my single friends think that they have no spare time!! Their time will come!

I wouldn't waste your money on the Post Office check. They missed a big mistake with my application and when I went back to complain they said "Well, we're not experts." (I did get the fee refunded though.)

Just be aware that with new child passports the requirements for documents are alot more than they used to be, this is what they are now -

If the child was born or adopted in the UK we need to see:

the child’s full birth or adoption certificate showing parents’ details and evidence of one parent’s nationality or immigration status at the time of the child’s birth. That is, either:

the mother’s UK birth certificate, Home Office certificate of registration or naturalisation, or her passport that was valid at the time of the child’s birth;
or
the father’s UK birth certificate, Home Office certificate of registration or naturalisation, or his passport that was valid at the time of the child’s birth and the parents’ marriage certificate.


Hope you can get hold of these documents easily.

looks like im gonna going to have to pay for all these! i have only got his small birth certificate. would i just contact registar local office for these.

You can now obtain the certificates online - birth certificate. Getting the Mother's sounds easier as if parents weren't married when the child was born then that makes it even more difficult and even if married also need the marriage certificate! I am sure anyone can apply for duplicate birth certificates.

ok so i have rang nephews social worker and asked what role i am acting as. foster,legally guardian etc etc, he is just classed as living with family. i rang up passport office (cheap number) and the easiest way to do it is to get his mom to apply for passport from prison. by me taking in or posting forms for her to fill in. cause mom has passport they want nephews full birth certificate and moms. to leave dads name blank as he is irish and doesnt have either so it would be nightmare to obtain.
