Our child will be turning 3 on his birthday while we are at Disney. Does anyone have suggestions on things to do that are special for him?

Make sure he gets a birthday button so he can get some Happy Birthday greetings and maybe a cupcake.

If you are staying at a Disney resort, you can purchase items that "magically" appear in your room and you can also have the Disney characters wish your child a Happy Birthday over the hotel phone. I would call Disney for pricing and exact details. I would get your a birthday pin because cast members do like to wish people a happy birthday and sometimes you can also free goodies from the cast members too (though this isn't often). You can also call ahead and order your child a cake from Disney's bakery. I had a chocolate cake for my birthday and it was one of the best cakes I had ever had. Another thing you can do is that you can transform your child into a pirate at Magic Kingdom.

I had my middle child's 3rd birthday there... We had breakfast at Chef Mickey's where they provided him a special cupcake. He doesn't really remember a lot of this trip, but we got many great pics, including him wiping off a birthday kiss from Cinderella lol.

Thanks for this info. I had no idea about the birthday cakes. My daughter will be celebrating her 15th birthday on our trip and I guess now she'll be getting a cake. :)

I would consider the pirates fireworks cruise but not sure I would do it for a 3rd birthday, they may not remember it forever. Maybe the wishes desert party? call it desert for dinner.

The number you call is dependent on which hotel or restaurant you would be eating at when you want the cake. You can find the phone numbers here: http://disneytravelbabble.com/how-to/order-cake/by-location/.
My daughters have both celebrated birthdays (as have I) at WDW and I agree, definitely get a birthday button, pixie dust can certainly happen by wearing it. One year we did the Wishes Dessert Party which was a total let down, but some people really like it, EPCOT also has an Illuminations Dessert Party which sounds amazing, there are boats you can rent to watch Illuminations from and they provide snacks and cake (expensive excursion but nice) did this one year for my nieces birthday, if you are staying on property, you can have Goofy call and wish your child a happy birthday (just let the front desk know you have a birthday in the group), two years we did MNSSHP on my daughter's birthday (it's in Oct), we've done special dinners, you can decorate the room really cool while he isn't there and surprise him with it, maybe say mickey did it..... lots of fun ways to celebrate there :)

I don't now how to link to a thread but there's a "Cake Chatter" thread on the restaurant board that has all kinds of information on how to order a cake at Disney. We are going to be celebrating our son's 4th birthday next week. Our original plan was to do Pirate's League with him but then I started worrying about the heat and the makeup and what if he wants to go swimming in the afternoon...Seemed like just not a great idea. Our new plan is to head over to Fort Wilderness with him for the day. If your son is outdoorsy, I highly suggest you look into the activities they have there. We are going to do the pony rides, visit the horse stable, maybe rent a canoe, and do the wagon ride.

IMHO, spending your birthday at Disney is special. Our older girls have had their birthdays at Disney (our oldest several times because that's when April vacation falls) and we don't do anything extra. It's Disney for crying out loud.

For our son's first birthday, we did a Hollywood & Vine character lunch with a custom cake with Handy Manny on it. He was so happy at the time, but obviously doesn't remember it now (he says he does when we show him pics, but I think he's just being silly).

His fourth birthday fell on the night of MNSSHP so that was his celebration and he loved it. His gift from his gramma was to pick out any dress up outfit in a gift shop to wear as a costume during the party. He chose a POTC tee shirt (he happens to be wearing it today actually!), POTC Mickey ears, and a little pirate gun. He met Jack Sparrow while wearing his costume and decided it was the best night ever.
