Childrens Ears on the plane Please help

My 9 year old cries every single time from the pain. We've tried earplanes, chewing, swallowing, holding breath etc...nothing seems to work.

I feel so bad for her. :sad2:

I feel bad for your dd because that's the way I've felt every time I've flown. It's horrible. One time a FA gave me 2 cups with hot (steaming) wipes in them to hold against my ears. Something about suction is supposed to help the situation, though I didn't notice any difference. Maybe this would help your dd, though.

I am going to put a lot of hope into those Earplanes. Plus, maybe things have changed since the 10+ years I've flown, either with my ears or with the way they can pressurize the cabin.

I am amazed that people can fly w/o ear pain. I strive to be one of those people!

Thanks. I've heard of the 2 cups but have never asked for them yet. Maybe on our next trip.

Let us know if the earplanes work for you.

My nose is always stuffed up, refuse to take prescription for it., nothing seems to work.

When I fly, I either wear a pres. motion sickness patch or take a dramamine. Unfortunately, dram. is similar to benedryl & I'm tired for the rest of day & don't experience much noticeable relief.

I & my DS's sit & comp gum furiously (to work our jaws - they're fine) but, by the time I get off the plane my ears are so stuffed up I can barely hear. Between muffled hearing for a day or so & my sinus' draining for days, you'd think I'd be miserable but....NO WAY, I'm going to WDW!

Funny, it doesn't happen on the return flight. Doctor thinks the pressure is just clearing everything out - a good thing sez he (?)

I have always hated flying because of the pain and not being to hear for days after landing. Before I had tried the EarPlanes, I told DH that if someone told me to wear a potatoe around my neck, I would be walking around the airport with a potatoe around my neck. I would try anything!!! The EarPlanes worked like a charm for me. I was amazed. I hope they work as well for you. You can always try the potatoe! :rotfl2:

I highly recommend the EarPlanes. Have used them for myself and my daughter. Work Great!

Another vote for earplanes. I used them last august. I usually get very bad blockage that lasts for a few days. Not with these. As soon as we hit 30000 feet or whatever the highest altitude is, i took them out. i didnt have to swallow or anything to clear my ears... definatly using them again on this trip//

I also recommend Ear Planes. They were recommended to us by a doctor at the after hours pediatrics clinic in Orlando when my daughter got an ear infection while at WDW and we had to fly home the next day! We got them at CVS or whatever the pharmacy is next to the after hours clinic.

One warning about Benadryl:

Our pediatrician gave her kids both Benadryl before their first plane flight because she hoped they would nap. Neither had taken Benadryl before, and they both threw up on the plane! She laughs about it now, but she warned me to always try medicines at home before trying them on a plane!

On our first trip to Disney, I brought gum for DS8, DD5 and DD4, but DD5 did not like the flavor of the gum, so she didn't chew any. On our desent into MCO her ears really started hurting to the point she was crying, so the flight attendant told her to suck on her thumb - and it helped (although she felt a little silly at her age). So, now when we fly, in addition to gum, I also bring things for them to suck on - like baby bottle pops, ring pops, etc.

I second, third, fifth..oh well, I recommend Ear Planes as well. I also get the Dum-Dum pops. They are great flavors, not as big as a Tootsie Pop and they like having different flavors so it's not very hard to get them to suck on them.

totally agree. and i know with my kids, benedryl makes them tired and extremely cranky. so if they dont end up napping on the plane you will have miserable kids...

I would also like an answer tp pedro2112's question. This is my kids 1st plane ride and they do not have any ear issues. Do I need to bring stuff for them to chew/suck or do you all do this because your kids have problems or issues with their ears??

I always say it is better to be prepared than sorry. If you take them, you won't need them. If you don't, you may be trying to console a child that feels like their head is going to explode. Not fun. I would be prepared and if you don't need them, great but it won't go to waste.

Our DS2 has flown twice now. Once at 15 mos and once at 22 mos. Both times he did fine. The first trip he was still on the bottle so that was pretty easy. This last trip he was drinking from a cup. Not as easy but sippy cups work okay. I gave him raisins too which he loves. Nice and chewy and I can give them to him one at a time so they stretch out nicely!

We also do the Benadryl. A dose before the plane takes off and he mainly sleeps all the way (its only a 2 hour flight). Didn't have any issues with him being groggy either. The flight attendants on both flights commented on what a great little flier he was. :thumbsup2

Flying again in June then December this year. He'll be a pro soon!

My kids do not have ear problems I just remember from when I went way back in the day what it feels like. And anything to prevent will help.

My dds both have little colds right now. DD 5 is really stuffed up. Well this have any effect on the plane if they still have the colds?

Yes, possibly it will. I was sick on the plane with a cold and stuffed up and that was the WORST ear pain I ever had in my life and I usually don't have any issues with my ears and flying.

You could ask the doctor what to do to releive the stuffiness before the flight maybe??

My dd will be 9 months old when we fly from Philly to Orlando. She does not use bottles or a binky and has not yet mastered a sippy cup. I had just planned on nursing her during take off and landing. Has anyone else done this?

I may also check out those ear planes for her.

We tried something for our DS4 called "ear"planes. You stick them in your ears (he thought they were cool) and they're supposed to keep them from closing up. My husband has tried the adult's as well and swears by them.

I got my DH pair at our local drug store and my son's I got right at the airport (but paid a few dollars more for them there).

That's not to say they'll work for your DS or DD but, for $5 a pair, it's worth a try!

Good luck!

If your kids are like mine, good luck trying to stick something in their ear. :scared: I bought those, and it wasn't the pressure that made them cry...it was trying to get those darn things in their ears! :earseek:

I bought ear planes at the drugstore for my sister a while ago because she has always had ear pain from flying and chewing gum didn't do anything for her. My son(10) and I have chewy candy on the plane just because we like the candy - we tell her it's a preventative measure :lmao:

I nursed DD at 8 or 9 months on a flight to CO, it was no problem - in fact now that I think about it, she didnt even nurse on one part of the landing, and didnt have any problem!!

I dont know if I would use the ear planes on an infant, or child under 2, I'd definately ask the doctor... I think they have smaller ear canals, so maybe they dont have the problems?
