I am mostly a lurker, but thought I should post what happened tonight.

a few days ago..or was it yesterday... I read a thread titled "2yr old driving" or somthng of the like. Within that thread rachelellen made this post:
"
I had a really, really creepy thing happen a few years ago. I was driving at rush hour behind a minivan with small child standing in the back with her hands and face pressed up against the glass. It took me about 10 minutes of feeling that something 'wasn't right' before I figured out that my discomfort was seeing a kid that small not in a car seat. (It's hard to explain, but I wasn't paying super close attention because I was watching the road, so it was a very vauge feeling of something in my visual field being 'off') Anyhow, after I noticed, I watched the kid for about 5 more minutes until I left the highway.

That night on the news was a report about a crash on that highway that killed two small children about the same time I was there. I was 99% sure that the picture of one of the kids was that face I saw in the window.
"

Tonight while driving home from the local Albertsons... I stopped at a light at a major intersection. I looked to my left (2 turning lanes) and there was an older gold car..a man driving and a woman passanger....with a tuft of black by her chest...could it be hair..? a dog? no..it was a child that could not have been older than a year....sittting in her lap. I was dumbfounded for a moment. I looked in the back seat and there were NO carseats. the couple chatted and laughed along. This post came blaring back to me. I called 911 and reported the car. The operator was very nice and when they turned I was able to give a plate number (as well as a full description of the car). I apologized for useing 911..but I didnt know the regular police number off hand, they said it wasnt a problem and now had several cars in the area looking for them.

the stargest thing is....I felt guilty for "tattling"..its odd. I know its the right thing, I confirm within myself as too how would i feel if I didnt call and heard on the news the child had died in an accident..like rachelellen. All I see in my head is the baby smiling at me through the window and trying to wave....I hope I helped.

Thank you rachelellen, your post helped me to jump in the moment and do somthing.

Good for you! It's called being a concerned citizen and too few people do it nowadays!

(OT, How's the hubby? Haven't seen him around here in a while...)

Definitely good for you! I had only read a few post on the other thread and completely missed Rachelellens story. How awful.

I used to work in child care and I saw a dad leaving with his son and his son was on his lap, driving. This was a two year old! I told my director and he had the police come out and check every car for car seats as they were dropping their children off. It's amazing what people think is a "good idea".

That is great, issa, good for you, good for the child. Hope the parents learn their lesson, for the child's sake. You did good.

Loki is doing great!! We love living in the orlando area and in just 7 more days we will be in possesion of a beautiful new home here!!!!

Life couldnt be better living under a disney sky! :sunny:

I was just reminded of something. My MIL never wears her seatbelt. Wouldn't bother me so much except in my car....I don't want her breaking my windsheild if we're in an accident. I've never said anything to her though.

Well, she was telling us once about taking her other grandson out somewhere when he was around 2-3. From what it sounded, he was either sitting in her lap (passenger side) or sitting in the middle between them. Either way, it sounded as if he wasn't in a car seat. We don't live near them, so it's not really an issue, but I will NEVER let her take my children anywhere in a car.

Good for you for calling! I think you did the right thing. You may have just saved that child's life. I cannot for the life of me understand why people do not buckle up their children.

I, also, say good for you! There really is no excuse, since there are so many places to get a free car seat if you cannot afford one.

I once called the police because there was a baby locked in a car in the Wal Mart parking lot. The windows were cracked and I heard crying when I got out of my car. I waited until the police arrived (about 5 minutes) and they went into the store and had to page the mother. I left while they were talking to her. I didn't feel like a tattle tale. I thought that she was an idiot!
