Child Hit By Bus Outside of Fort Wilderness

The article says the boys were riding in the same direction as the bus, so either he rode into the path of the bus or the bus for some reason swerved into him? I would think the bus driver could see the boys ahead and he would've slowed down to a crawl as he drove the bus past, just to be safe.

To be fair, we don't know that he didn't slow down do we? Kids on bikes can dart out fast.

It is a sad tragic accident, and like others have said, life will never be the same for at least 2 families.:sad1:

That is so sad, my prayers to everyone who is affected by this tragedy.

:guilty: From local WESH TV:

"Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Kim Montes said both of the children were on the side of the road where there is a sidewalk. A preliminary investigation showed the boy left the sidewalk and entered the roadway.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The girl was not hurt.

"The little boy ... left the sidewalk and went into the southbound lanes of Big Pine Drive, struck the side of the bus and then was subsequently pulled underneath the bus and run over by the bus," Montes said.

In that case, there's pretty much nothing the driver could have done to avoid the accident. It doesn't make it any less tragic.

Sounds like the boy rode out and struck the bus (as opposed to being hit by the bus). So sad and tragic. Why were these kids allowed to ride their bicycles out on the road??? Regardless of any sidewalk (which is for walking. Bikes are not supposed to be on sidewalks), why were these poor kids out there?? They should've been on the bicycle trails.

A lot of children tend to think that they can ride their bikes where ever because it is a "campground". We have had more than one child dart out in front of us while driving our golf cart around. You have to be very careful in FW because there are so many noises going on constantly. You can hear the boat whistle, and train whistle going, cars, busses, music etc.
Still very tragic but I can see how this could happen so quickly. :sad2:

Unfortunately many people at Disney kind of let their guard down. They kind of feel like they are in a bubble where nothing can hurt them. This is true of sexual predators, robbery, and accidents. I could see kids playing around not paying attention to their surrounds while in the same situation at home in normal life they are more attentive.

When these things happen hopefully people realize that and others pay a little closer attention.

Wow! I've never been there so I didn't know how close the sidewalk was to the road. There is no room for error there! The boy could have become distracted by the bus passing him and then lost control - who knows. It does seem like it was just a tragic accident. I feel sorry not only for the victim's family but the bus driver and those on the bus who saw and felt the accident. That is something that will stick with them for the rest of their lives.

This is the kind of accident that could have happened anywhere, in any town, it is just very sad.

That is so horrible! My prayers and thoughts go out to everyone involved. It's unfortunate that these sort of things happen, especially at the 'happiest place on earth'. :sad2:

My dad, who is against Disney for so many reasons I can't name them, blames them and says that it is a dangerous place to go, and you put your life in their hands. He says every year someone dies there, and he wouldn't pay any money to go there.

Now, he's basing this off of the last year, with first the monorail accident and now this. Plus he's cynic, which means you can't change his mind on the 'horrors of Disney'

Sorry for going OT...I'm just venting. I figured (but hope) you guys wouldn't mind. :)

Every year MANY people die in tragic accidents in Southern Jersey and every other place in the world. What odd logic by your dad.

I feel so horrible for the family. :(

I hope the driver of the bus can find some peace that there was nothing they could have done to prevent this.
I get really nervous whenever I drive around a biker in the street. I'm always afraid they may hit a pothole or something and crash into me or right in front of me. I drive cautiously around them.
