Child Hit By Bus At Disney Dies

I'm just sick about this. That poor baby and his family. My prayers go out for them.

Somethings not right here. Multiple bus crashes in less than 6 months with injuries and now a death? Is Disney forcing less drivers {layoffs} to do more work and are they working more hours with less rest? Disney really needs to look at the overall situation here.

No, the drivers are bound by DOT rules regarding how many hours they drive in a given period, and in fact, Disney makes sure that if they have a job driving for another company, that they do not go over the allowed limit between the 2 jobs. They don't screw around with hours when it comes to the bus drivers.

Monorails and boats...that's another issue, but it is not the issue for bus drivers.

Rumor had it that in the last incident, the driver was texting.... I surely hope that isn't the case here.

My prayers are with the family, and especially with the surviving 11 yo girl. I'm certain she must have been a witness :sad1:

According to the report, the boy left the sidewalk, rode into the road and ran into the SIDE of the bus and then was pulled under the bus. I do not see how anyone can fault the driver or Disney for this. It was a tragic accident, but the boy ran into the bus, not the bus into the boy.

Yup... I didn't read any details of the accident, but IMO the bigger point of your post is that many people make assumptions without knowing the facts.

just as they did with the monorail incident

My heart also goes out to the 30-year Disney veteran bus driver. His/her heart must be extremely heavy this evening, as well.

This really just makes me sick to my stomach that this happened, both for the family that is having to endure this pain, and for the bus driver who will have to live with this for the rest of their life.

My first thoughts went to the kids in my neighborhood who dart out in front of me when I'm driving all the time. I've had to slam on my brakes many times, but if a child cut in front of a bus, it's not going to be able stop like a car. It's SO important for parents to teach children that streets are not for kids, and I wish the parents in my neighborhood would do that before something happens like that to someone else. I drive SO slow when the sun is in my eyes because I can't see that well.

I just watched WESH 2 news and they did say that the eyewitness accounts are that the child went out into the street and struck the moving bus. Doesn't sound like the bus had much of a chance to stop.

My thoughts and prayers are with this family during their loss and for the bus driver and their family as well.

A couple of things strike me. One is the title of this thread--"Child Hit by Bus"
More accurately "Bus hit by child".
And the news immediately launches into ALL the other accidents at WDW even tho this seems pretty clearly a case of pedestrian/bike error.
And that bit about why the driver might not ever be "allowed behind the wheel" of a bus again. Why shouldn't he be?????

OP here...you are correct but this was the title of the story at the time when there wasn't much information.

I woke up this morning thinking about this family who has lost a son. My prayers are with them during this difficult time.

I agree with the statement about the bus driver. As you know, he is a 30-yr driver for Disney. Why shouldn't he be driving as soon as he is cleared to drive again? No reason.

I feel terrible for the child's family. As might be expected, they are just trying to make sense of all of this. It's unfortunate that they're heavily relying their beliefs on statements from their 11-year-old neighbor who didn't happen to actually see the accident. Another article stated that his is grandmother insisting that the bus hit him b/c his bike wasn't damaged, but that almost seems to prove the opposite. (I've seen my own family grieve at the loss of a young person and sometimes people just want something to grasp.) I can't imagine the pain that his family is in. So sad!!!

Frankly, I'm disgusted that the family is planning to sue Disney...for what? Yes, it was a tragic accident. No, it wasn't Disney's or the driver's fault that their child left the sidewalk and ran into the bus. People want someone to blame, but in this case there is no one. It's a tragic accident, but nothing more.---Kathy

I unfortunately happened to hear about this while waiting in line for the Jungle Cruise - I was there last week. A friend sent me a text while I was in line - she was in her room taking a break and saw it on the news. The state investigators and at least two passengers on the bus gave interviews - they both said the boy looked back and then went off of the sidewalk into the side of the bus - they don't even think the bus driver knew what had happened - let alone had time to do anything about it. I am most bothered by the fact that the parents were not with these children. I stay in the cabins in the campground and do not let my 12 year old son run around by himself, mostly because of the buses. There are bike paths that are further away from the street the parents should have suggested one of these routes. I am also bothered that two days after she already blamed Disney and had hired a lawyer and her own private investigator. The 11 year old girls story changed when she was alone with his family - but her initial report was that he ran off of the road. My heart goes out to the family, the driver, the girl, and the 28 people on the bus, but parents have got to be responsible for their children - espescially somewhere as big as Disney. As far as overworked employees - Disney has got to do something - this was the most miserable week I have ever had - I really don't want to go back until they stop running specials and get the crowds out of the parks - the employees were cranky and not happy and I don't blame them - I read in the Tampa newspaper that they are being forced to work overtime right now (not bus, monorail, boat, or train operators - they all have a cap as to the number of hours they can work in a day). I would be tired too!:sad1:

I am afraid the Tampa newspaper got this one wrong. It is true Bus drivers have restrictions on the hours they can work however I do know first hand the at least one of the other departments you mentioned can pretty much work OT at will.
