Hi all!

Well, my 3 year old daughter is in absolute LOVE with all things princess.....I was the one who, on trips past, said I would never subject my kids to dressing up like the princesses in all that polyester garb....A lot of kids I saw just looked like they were melting under all that crinoline and satin.....

Kohls had a cute yellow cotton sundress I picked up. The first thing my daughter said when she saw it was " Princess Belle!" Has anyone ever dressed up their kids in a somewhat comfy "princess" dress? Not the official ones like in the BBB.....If I were to put her hair up in a bun, get a "crown" for her to wear and put on this comfy yellow sundress do you think that if she were to see the princesses they would think she was one too? She wants to go as a princess one day on our trip but I just can't bring myself to go all out in that HEAT! OH and anyone who has done this if you have any pics can you post them? THANKS!!

I think its a perfect solution! She will be cute and comfy and still feel like a princess, which is the most important thing at Disney!

My girls are just wearing some cute cotton Princess themed dresses I had made for them from a woman on Etsy to Akershus. Then I had some custom gowns made for Cinderella's Royal Table that have no itchy crinoline or layers to them, just a thin silky material that will be cool and nice on their skin. We are also doing some Disney Princess tops with short lined tutus with bike shorts underneath on other days. They will get to feel like princesses all week minus the ten layers of hot, itchy crinoline!

I say as long as she is happy and comfortable, you are on the winning side :) Have a great time without the discomfort!

Sounds like a great idea. The only thing that matters is that SHE feels like a princess. DD is wearing a princess themed sundress since she hates the Disney ones because they are scratchy. I think you will see a lot of kids like that.

Hi,

We have had the Disney costume princess dress but as mu daughter got older she preferred wearing a fancy dress. We find old flower girl dresses that look princessee and wear a tiara, she loves to dress as a princess and we see many girls doing so at Disney. Must be comfortable at parks though.

Sounds perfect! There is such a wide range of "princess attire" -- all of it super cute and fitting for a princess. We've had many princesses call our daughters "Princess" when meeting our daughters such as "Hello, Princess!" even when they weren't wearing a formal princess dress. Cinderella once even told my daughter "I really like your headband" and she sort of touched hers after saying it.....like, "hey! look! you're wearing a headband and so am I" It wasn't a crown or even princess fabric, just a headband.

Your little princess will feel very, very special and her dress sounds adorable!

My daughter is one of those children that are 'the fairest of them all'... (hee hee, I crack myself up... :rotfl:) but I digress. She has very sensitive skin, and like most little girls, after a half hour of wearing her princess dresses, she is complaining about how much the sleeve are hurting her, and she itches. I saw another poster here a couple of months back telling how they got their daughter the sleepwear from the Disney site. Those nightgowns are GORGEOUS, and they look VERY comfortable. I am going to pick up one or two of them for our trip in September. I am def. going to go with the delux Cinderella one, and maybe one other. Here's the link. http://www.disneystore.com/clothes/sleepwear/girls/mn/1000224+1000763/

I made my dd8 cotton versions of princess dresses. They were much more comfortable than the store versions and a bit more "grown up" for her, although she has let me know that she will NOT be dressing up for our next trip.
Here is the Queen of Hearts she wore to the Neverland Tea Party:

Well, the princesses think I'm one (or at least refer to me as so ;)) in cargo capris and a tee, so I think she's good either way. We also had a handmade princess dress on our last trip, and DNiece wore it all day long, whereas she's usually itching (literally) to get out of her official Disney dress after breakfast (CRT) or the photo op.

If she decided she wants a fancier dress (though she will be fine - the CM's refer to just about every girl as princess) I got my daughter's dresses at www.mydressuptrunk.com The dresses are very easy to pack, lightweight and not itchy at all!

ETA: at the website I think they show all the dresses with hoopskirts under them, but those are separate, we didn't use one and the dresses looked just fine.

I think there is a way to "dress up" for the characters/princesses and parks while keeping things fun and comfortable for your kids as well. I think your idea of the yellow sundress is great. There are a lot of cute outfits such as sundresses, characters tank tops/shirts, skirts, etc. that can be worn as an alternative to traditional costumes; and you can consider adding easily removable accessories such as frilly hair ties, hair ribbons, tiaras, necklaces, bracelets, and maybe even a little hair glitter and lip gloss to make it more of a complete ensemble.

I bought a pillowcase dress off ebay for my dd to use in Aug as I felt the minnie dress she wanted would be way too hot.

Op, do you have a feel for how your DD would feel in the comfy cotton dress? Even if she thought it was cute, do you think she'd still love it if she saw other girls actually dressed as Cinderella or Belle?

I think if you can get away with her in the comfy dress, then that is your best bet. But I ask those questions because I remember how I was growing up. I was a very girly girl. (Perhaps it was an unhealthy obsession.:rolleyes1) I would have liked the cotton dress to the extent that I was a girly girl and loved dresses. However, the minute I saw another girl in one of the actual princess dresses, I would have then noticed the difference, and would have really wanted to be in that dress. And I would have sacrificed comfort to do it.

I'm definitely not trying to discourage you. I hope it works, if you try it. Just thought I'd give my perspective.

There are lots of cute, comfy options on Etsy. My little girl is about to turn 3 and for our breakfast at CRT this past week, she wore a cute Cinderella T-shirt with a pair of white cotton shorts and the Cinderella tutu they sell in the parks. We had bought the tutu on our last trip and she loves it and chose to wear it over her big Belle dress from the Disney Store. She seemed very comfy because the tutu was lined and the tulle wasn't up against her skin. Wasn't so comfy for me when I was holding her, but she was thrilled to wear it and refused to take it off all day at MK.

They have tons of cute tutu options now. When we bought hers, they just had Cinderella, Belle, Tiana and Minnie, but we also saw Ariel, Jasmine and Tinkerbell tutus on this trip. They're about $33, I think.
