Yikes, we leave in 22 days and chicken pox is making its way around my kids' school:scared1: Cross your fingers for us!!!:sad2: Anyone else have an issue like this right before you were about to leave??? Please tell me it all worked out!:woohoo:

They don't vaccinate for that in Canada?

Even if they did, you can still catch it. (Sorta like the flu shot..just makes it weaker?)

Crossing my fingers for you! How awful!

Yes they do but when my boys were of age for the vaccination it was new and it wasn't clear how effective it was going to be.:confused3 Also, I did a bit of research on it before I decided to not get them vaccinated and read that it is better for kids to get them when they are young rather than getting shingles when they are older.
Normally, I wouldn't even be bothered by it BUT it is terrible:headache:timing!!
And it is true that even if you have had the shot it weakens the virus so the outbreak isn't as bad BUT again, they are still able to contract shingles when they are older.
All we can do is hope for the best I guess!! Thanks for your well wishes!:)

There's an innoculation for adults for shingles now.
I hear it's expensive but that should change by the time they grow up!

I hope your boys don't come down with the Chicken Pox during your trip. Would you keep them in the hotel if they did as to not expose others at DL?

My boys, almost 18 now, had the vaccine when it first came out. It went around their school when they were in kindergarten and one caught it and the other never did. His case was mild and not too bad.

I will never foget when I came down with chicken pox in 2nd grade. I started feeling sick while at my best friend's house. I just laid down on their entry way. They were supposed to leave for DL in 2 days but they canceled in case she came down with it. She never did, and she never let me forget.

My parents and inlaws both had the shingles vaccine so it is out there. Their insurance must have covered it because I never heard them say anything about the cost. :confused3

Bad timing for chicken pox. :sad2: Hope you all can avoid it for now.

Someone at my church just got it. I believe it can incubate for 21 days before showing.

From everything that I have read:surfweb:(and believe me when I say I have been doing ALOT of reading!:upsidedow) It seems as though with kids it should only take about 7-10 for incubation. It does seem that the cases in our school are quite mild and are moving along quickly- not spreading from kid to kid but aren't lasting long with the infected child:sick:
They had a field trip today to the local pool but I opted to keep them at home:sad2:They weren't too happy with me! But as all of us parents know, the pool is a breeding ground for, well, just about everything!!:lmao: All still seems to be well with mine, fingers are still crossed!!:)

Thanks pink budgie! Sounds like you have twins as well - and boys too!;) Glad to hear that you have survived to 18!!! Somedays I'm not sure that I will!:rotfl2:

Yes, I thought this was true... And I also heard that you are actually contagious PRIOR to actually getting the spots -- can anyone verify??

I wonder if you could run to the health nurse and get a vaccination for the kids now?? That way even if they got a few spots (usually near injection site, if at all) then they would be cleared up prior to your trip :goodvibes
My son had CP at 6 months and he was given the vaccine recently. No side effects.
My oldest had the vaccine when it was new-ish in 2000. No side effects. I think she's due for a booster though?? Not sure.

Hope all goes well :)

Yes, you are most contagious 24-48hrs before the spots show thus not even really knowing that you are spreading it around!:sad2: The kids in our school have been getting it within 7-10 days from exposure so I am only assumeing that it would hit my kids just as fast...then once you have the pox, they are contagious when they are still blisters that are oozing:sick: Usually that transfer goes on just in the family with touching the same things etc.
I guess basically I am hoping on a wing and a prayer:littleangel: that we don't get them and our trip can go as planned. We are going to give it another week (by next Wed.) and if he doesn't have it than I am pretty sure we are good to go.:woohoo: If he does have it we will have to look at postponing the trip but at quite a loss on money if that is the case:eek:

I remember when I got chicken pox at around 6 or 7. One of mine got infected on my knee (probably from scratching) and I still have a scar 15 years later. I hope your son doesn't catch them so close to your trip. When I got them my best friend had to come over to my house everyday until he caught them too. Guess they were just trying to get it out of the way.

I had them when I was 5. I had a terrible case of Chicken Pox. I had them in my hair up my nose, inside my eyelids, ears.... and fifty, yes I said fifty years later I have scars, as well.
But, what really got my attention about this thread was, I just returned from a trip to San Francisco. We went on the Alcatraz Tour. And low and behold the little girl in line ahead of us was covered in pox! Her little face was flush with fever. How could her parents do that to her and expose eveyone else???:confused3 We don't know if my Husband ever had Chicken Pox as his parents died young. My Son had a light case, so I hope he is immune, as he is on leave from the Army. He has training to do this next week and can not afford to come down with Chicken Pox. :tink:

We were leary of the shot too, but ended up getting it for our son when he started school. I was kinda hoping he'd get it naturally before then, but no luck. He's never had it yet, and I had him get a booster shot when he was 10 years old. I've told him to keep up on when he might need another one since in adulthood it's so dangerous to have.

My fingers are crossed that your kiddos won't get it. That is an awful way to ruin a trip! Seems like a lot of junk is still going around. We've heard of quite a few stomach bugs and such making it's rounds. Scary stuff!

Butting in but it could have been prickly heat rash. My older son gets this whenever he overheats and it looks a lot like chicken pox-I always feel people judging us when we are out in public :rotfl: One lady asked once if her daughter could rub my son's arm because she was hoping she would catch it. Uh sorry lady, it's heat rash and totally not contagious!

Anyway I hope it was prickly heat rash and not CP because if it truly were CP those are some pretty obnoxious parents.
