What is the world coming to? :rotfl2:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-food_fotos_bdjun22,0,3701526.story

Then on wgnradio.com the 2 talk show hosts were discussing it, they wanted to know why in the world would anyone take pictures of food!! :rotfl2:

So yes, I called in and talked about disboards and the food porn thread, but most importantly I felt taking pictures and writing dining reviews helped me in my planning, so I love doing the same in return!!

(the article talks about one chef in Chicago has banned taking pictures in his restaurant as it was becoming to big of a distraction - PLUS the food was getting cold!! :rotfl2:

Hi Sandy I heard you today. I totally agree that this would help when making reservations. I love to see the pictures that others have taken. I should start doing that as well.:goodvibes

i was stopped from taking photos of food only once - it was at the Bellagio buffet in Las Vegas (dinner, july 2005)

the head chef himself came out from the back and personally "scolded" me and threatened that if i didn't stop, i'd be escorted out

what had i done?

i had taken 2 pictures - exactly 2: one of the bread display and one of the chilled shrimp/crab legs

no, i wasn't blocking anyone from getting their food, wasn't being obvious, wasn't in the way

just 2 quick photos then poof! - i'm being "spoken to"

i was mortified.....

but not so in disney!!!

i take pix of all our meals, but my best times are during the F&W!!

I can kinda understand his thought - it's a 12 person restaurant. Obviously very intimate and chef focused. He still allows picture taking in his other restaurants, just not this one.

There is a time and place for things like that. I would not take pictures if seated in the dining room at V&A (though would if at the Chef's Table since I would be the only party). I would not take pictures of the food in his restaurant, or really any high end restaurant.

While I agree with the "time and place" statement, I see nothing wrong with inquiring of the staff if they mind photography. I did that at V&A in the main dining room because I was concerned that I would bother other diners, and our entire wait staff encouraged me to take as many pictures as I liked.

I also did this on our recent trip to Las Vegas - again asking the staff if they had any objections before whipping out the camera. I love to take pictures in the more high end restaurants because in many instances we're not likely to go back a second time. The food in many of those places is almost like a work of art - I love having pictures afterwards to remind us of just how wonderful an evening we had. It also makes for a great photo montage when you get a copy of their menu as a souvenir.

Having said that, if someone told us we couldn't take pictures I would abide by it.

I don't see anything wrong with asking either.

Maybe that chef had male PMS or something. We dined at Prime at the Bellagio and I took photos of everything and they could have cared less.

Personally, we love the food porn and we do take pics at most places. Although there are some dining establishments that you just don't feel comfortable whipping out a camera, and I don't then. Mostly though I would think the restuarants would love the free publicity. :confused3

Wow, that is way too funny!

On the other hand, the article gave names of restaurants that do allow food porn. At least we have some names of restaurants to try. ;)

First the ban on foie gras, now this. Chicago ain't my kinda town for feelin' the food love. LOL!

LOL! :lmao: Funny meeting you all here! ;) I love my fellow foodies!!! :grouphug:

We just got back from Chicago and took our share of food porn pics! :thumbsup2

We had dinner at Tramonto's Steak & Seafood - the restaurant that was just featured on Top Chef! You know, the one with the Tomahawk challenge and the infamous frozen scallops. Here's a couple pics of that AWESOME piece of meaty goodness!

Anyway, I was told I could take as many pics as I wanted, and from what it states in the article, it's the same for Rick Tramonto's other restaurant, Tru.

Cheers!
-Michelle

P.S. Alison, the food pics are coming!!! :goodvibes

Well, I hope they never prohibit taking pics of the food at Disney. I love, love, love the food porn and it's fun getting pics of all that fabulous food!! ;)

Michelle, where was my invite??? You know I'd have paid my own way to eat there, too! the big honkin' Flintstone steak! :rotfl2:

If you can remember back to my Larded and Loaded report, I saw Rick Tramonto at the PFTS. He was the one with the Lobster Bisque shooters that I was going ga-ga over. :lovestruc

The chef in the article is from NEW YORK, not Chicago. The Chicago newspaper carried the story, but the chefs they quoted from Chicago all said they allowed photos; one did not like flashes being used which makes sense. I agree the foie gras thing here was pretty silly, but I do like to defend my hometown when necessary!

Ok, I need to pop out my eyeballs and wash them (eww, did I really just say that?) in order to realize that Chicago chef's aren't as uptight as the New York chef. ;)

OK! We hear you.. come on.. Foie Gras and no pictures??? What is next??

In all seriousness, I can't believe that chefs would not look at people taking pictures and posting them places as free publicity?

I really think that some people need to calm down. I agree with Brenda and I would try and respect others and keep my flash down and even ask but I have seen and heard of people being ridiculed by others. Everyone has different wants and needs and I think the lesson we should learn is tolerance and allowing people to enjoy their experience their own way.
If a chef feels threatened by someone taking pictures I would wonder what is going on.

...... stepping off my soap box........

Yeah, and it turns out it was a New York chef troublemaker. It was just reported in the Chicago Tribune and as AM radio fodder. :)

I just wanted to add that I heard you today on the "girlfriends" show!!! Gotta love Kathy and Judy :)
