Chicago - Ruth Chris - and ?

Thanks for all the helpful replies. We've decided not to go to Ruth Chris (Factors: price and toddler).

I think we're going to postpone going to Chicago until sometime later this summer.

So, I was thinking that going to one of The Melting Pot restaurants might be fun. Has anyone been? How are the prices there and is this restaurant kid friendly?

ok, I have to ask this. Why does the baby need to be there? If you are staying in town, why not get a sitter? It is your anniversary. I thought the idea of celebrating it was to get a nice adults dinner with your spouse??

Maybe check out restaurant.com and find a local restaurant that you can try from there. Wait until you can get an 80% off code so you can get the certificate for $2.

I've been to the one in Annapolis, MD and was not impressed. DH & I had wine with our meal, the Big Night Out I think, and dessert, and the bill was about $100 for dinner (I can't recall if that included tip or not- it was over 4 years ago) that I thought was just OK but not out of the ordinary in the slightest. I didn't think it was worth the $$$ and would not go back.

I have gone to the one in King of Prussia. It was good and there were children there, including mine! I would go back. We have a Shulas closer to where we live though, which I thought was comparable. So, unless I was in King of Prussia visiting my parents, I would do Shulas. Besides, the last 3 times I was in King of Prussia, my mom insists we all go to Maggiano's (including this past Easter Sunday). Since she and my father are paying, I really don't care. My kids LOVE Maggiano's.

Fondue with a toddler would make me nervous. Mine would insist on doing it herself and then, if that was a semi-success, the food would be too hot for her to eat. I've also heard they tend to be hot inside.

I'm sticking to my vote of Harry Carey's.

Maggiano's is in the same vicinity, but it is a chain. (I guess so is RC)

Miller's Pub is kid friendly though they don't have a kids menu. I think I shared ribs and my sides. They might have appetizers that work. Not romantic, per se, but if Ruth's Chris was too overwhelming for a toddler, then Miller's Pub may work better. It's in the loop and is on the east side of the Palmer House Hilton. It does depend where you stay, though. (just brainstorming places we've been)

We had a fabulous meal (as in top ten restaurant meals in my life!!!) at David Burke Primehouse at The James Hotel last month. It's a steakhouse and was a wonderful experience from start to finish. We took our two daughters, ages 6 and 3, so we had a 5:30pm reservation. I try to dine early when we have the kids with us, keeps everyone happier. One of the reasons why we chose Primehouse over a few of the other steakhouses is that Primehouse has a children's menu. And even that food was excellent! The waiter brought coloring pages to the girls and got their food out quickly, and as DH & I ate dinner he brought them ice cream desserts to keep them engaged.

Another great restaurant, but not really budget, was Shaw's Crab House for Sunday brunch. It's 39.95, but kids are free. The food was great, including all kinds of seafood (crab, sushi, shrimp, raw bar), an extensive buffet and a dessert room which included lollipops and cotton candy that they make on premise!

Enjoy Chicago and your time with your family. Don't forget the Children's Museum on Navy Pier!

Both Melting Pot and Ruth's Chris will both easily take 2 hours plus for a meal. These are really not restaurants for the budget minded nor those looking for a quick toddler friendly meal. Chicago is literally spilling over with restaurants. Perhaps if you posted what a comfortable price range for an entree (with sides) is for your wallet and your desired area would help us guide you to a restaurant that would suit your wallet and your family.
