Chicago hotel help

We are planning a weekend in Chicago in December and not sure where to stay. While there, we want to visit the Christkindl market as well as take in the sites on Michigan Ave. We will have a car, so parking is an issue. There will be 4 of us - 2 adults and 2 kids (10, 14.) Can anyone suggest a hotel that may be convenient to both locations and won't break the bank?

That's a tough one... Whenever I go to Chicago I like to stay in a hotel in Streeterville. It's near Navy Pier, Michigan Ave., and close to the loop (where Christkindlmarket is). As for cost of hotel, Chicago is expensive but there are a few cheaper options out there. Try looking online for deals. Be sure to include parking in your cost. It's around $40 a night (I think). This past July I attended a convention in Chicago and stayed at the HYATT CHICAGO MAGNIFICENT MILE Hotel on St. Clair St.. The parking fee was $61 a night. The convention room rate was about $140 per night, which included taxes. Maybe other hotels cost less to park.

You could try the Comfort Suites on N Michigan, Hard Rock, Hotel Monaco or Swissotel..those can usually be found on Orbitz or Booking.com..the Wit (Doubletree) is really close the Christkindlemart. You could leave your car at any of those hotels and walk to it . I am partial to the Sheraton on N Water St or Embassy Suites but that is up by Navy Pier, not sure if that is too far N for you? Once you decide, call to verify parking..it's brutal.

Best Western River North Free parking rarity downtown. Very walkable to MI ave.

I have a reservation at Best Western River North next month for the Festival of Lights. I have stayed there once before. They have free parking and are just a few blocks from Michigan Avenue. It is also right next to Rainforest Cafe, Hard Rock Cafe, and Portillos. A McDonalds is right across the street as well as a 24 hour CVS.

I am not an expert on Chicago but we just got back from a short trip we stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn at State and Grand. We liked this location. Parking was easily accessible. You could self park in an attached garage or use the valet.

We then moved to the Wit for a conference. The decor was more trendy but the parking was worse. I don't think you could self park and the valet had to load/unload in the street. Another huge inconvenience was no free wifi in the room. I don't think I have stayed anywhere else lately that did not have free wifi.

Check Groupon for River North neighborhood hotels and use SpotHero for parking (25 for parking instead if 40-60). We got an additional 5 bucks off for using the app. We stayed Hyatt Place and it was nice and relatively inexpensive. Also check the major hotel websites under "specials" and you might find something awesome. Have fun! Live Chicago!

I work near Michigan and Ontario. You've gotten some great suggestions.

Just a note that the Red Roof Inn at St. Clair and Ontario has gotten some horrible reviews from some recent travelers to our office.

There's a Doubletree on Ohio that's a couple of blocks from Michigan Avenue that's lovely -- DH and I stayed there for our 20th anniversary. Parking was high, though ($50 IIRC), and I think we found a garage that was less for daily parking.
