My DS and I met a gentleman and his wife on the train heading to Wrigley yesterday. He is 94 and was at the '45 World Series game between the Cubs and Detroit. He tried to get tix but there were none. He was on leave from the Navy and in his uniform, and there were other servicemen at the park (from various branches) who had also come down hoping to get a ticket. He said they sort of grouped together to talk and an Andy Frain usher came over and asked if they were there to see the game.. Ulysses(man on train) said yeah, but no tickets. The Andy Frain said, "You guys don't need tickets. Follow Me" and they saw the game. He could remember just about every detail, the pitchers, plays, all of it. He knew William "Billy Goat" Sianis , said because they were both Greek and Ulysses could speak Greek they formed a friendship . Reminded us of how William adopted the goat after it fell off a truck and wandered into the tavern. Ulysses son took him to the World Series game 3 (Friday). He was interviewed outside by Ronnies statue. I showed him a picture I took of my DS from same game right in front of Ronnie..we smiled. Our train was delayed about 40 minutes yesterday and I have never been happier to have been stuck on the tracks. Ulysses and his wife were headed to the Symphony yesterday, we wished them well, thanked them for the wonderful conversation, stories and his service to our country. We shook hands, said GO CUBS and that for my son and I , we just got our W right there, meeting him. For my DS and I Ulysses was the missing puzzle piece for a W at Wrigley. Puzzle is filled in. DS wrote a message thanking him and honoring him on Wrigley's wall before the game, he deserved it. Unlike Ulysses DS and I did not obtain tickets. That's just fine with us. We had a plan on how we wanted to experience Game 5. We watched/listened street rat style on Waveland. I had my little a.m. radio listening to Pat and Ron in one ear and the crowd/Walk Ups / Gary Pressy with the other and watching the scoreboard thru the back of the bleachers. 2 of the rooftops put tv's in the front. The Firehouse was awesome and fed hundreds with free hot dogs. We used the empty Program Boxes and had our own "box seats" lol.(I was too lazy to lug bag chairs thru train and El) Many had their phones trying to watch but they delay, hiccups etc was frustrating for many. My old school radio was only 2 seconds off real time so I would call the game out, made quite a few friends last night. My DS and I had one of the best days of our life together. We cheered we cried. My DH had to stay home still recovering from bronchitis that hit the day we took the pennant. I knew Robin was just inside the wall from me in her seats having the time of her life. I could have thrown a baseball to her if I had Heyward's arm, lol. What a day yesterday, WHAT A DAY!
