Can someone please explain why my DD13 is going to die if she doesn't get one of these for Christmas? She has a $20 flat iron that *seems* to work just fine. I mean her hair looks flat! How flat can you get it!??? :confused3
I don't plan to buy her one just because I can't see spending that kind of money on it. She will get enough cash from relatives and can buy her own if she really wants it. I just want to understand why the Chi is going to make it flatter??? I know I sound clueless... :rotfl:

I can't explain it either but it does work. My DD went through the $20 ones also but she claimed that they just didn't get the hair as silky as what they do in the hair salon (they use the Chi there). We got her a Chi (my cousin is a stylist so we do get a discount) and it really does work well.

For a 13 y/o its probably just a brand name thing. Chi's are good if you have hair that is extra resistant to straightening, like coarse, curly hair. They are also slightly less damaging to your hair, although you still need to use some sort of heat protectant spray because no matter what, flat ironing is just begging for breakage, split ends, and flyaways. Oh the things we do for beauty!! :teeth:

The Chi iron is the best invention ever! I love mine and would be a bush woman without it. The $20 ones just don't work as well. The Chi is ceramic and ionic which is what sets it apart from the cheapies. They do have a lifetime warranty, so you really can't go wrong.

I can understand your thinking. I am usually pretty frugal and the idea of spending almost $100 on something I could buy at Walmart for $20 seemed crazy. Until I borrowed a friend's Chi one day. They really are WAY better. I'm planning on buying one myself but I haven't yet. They leave your hair with a better shine and the results last longer. My hair looked good the next morning even. My stylist told me it does something that protects your hair from frizzies throughout the day too. I know it sounds crazy, but they really are worth the money.

Try overstock.com.

A poster her on DIS sent me there and they had a coupon for first time buyers so I got mine around $80. I love it. I have had the cheap ones too but the Chi does not 'fry' my hair like the cheap one did. I didn't think there would be a big difference but there is.

My DD is 13 and has very thick unruly hair. The Chi is the best thing to flatten it!! :thumbsup2

Unlike a lot of other things, the more expensive flat-irons really ARE better than the cheap ones.

They are expensive but other flat irons really dont even compare. It would make a super Christmas present.

I agree, Chi flat irons do work better. My dd just loves hers :goodvibes

If you are purchasing, better to purchase from an authorized retailer as my friend spent 70 bucks on a fake one on ebay. Something to do with the cords looking different?

Our hair salon uses another brand (I think its paul mitchell?) and it works just as well as the Chi, but the stylist told me they cost 125 and have a great three year warranty.

Okay you guys are all making me sound like the clueless mom! Doesn't anyone have anything negative to say? I need ammunition on why she doesn't need it! :rotfl: So out of curiosity, she has thick medium length hair would a 1 inch or 2 inch be better? Just asking, because as a mom, I reserve the right to change my mind and *maybe* get it for her! :teeth: :teeth:

I'd probably go with the two inch if that's all she wants to do is straighten. The wide the iron the faster it will go. The smaller ones offer some versatility as far as flipping up the ends and doing some curling.

OMG we can't have any flipping going on! She freaks out completely if it isn't perfectly straight!

When I go to the salon, I notice that *most* of the stylists use the 2-inch irons. They can take large sections of hair and really do a good job on the thicker hair. But you'd be safe with both sizes.

Make sure that whatever you buy (and you know you will) if it is a Chi, save the box because you will need it if you need to return the iron for any reason.

Also, my cousin is a stylist and many of the other brands are as good as the Chi. Hot Tools, Rusk, and other salon brands work just as well. You may find them to be a tad bit cheaper or they may go n sale more often than the Chi.

All I know is that everytime I visit my hairdresser she fusses me because she knows I haven't bought the Chi yet. I use the cheapy one because I can't bring myself to buy one before Christmas, but it does damage my hair a lot worse than a chi would. I should mention my hairdresser is a family freind who barely charges me for her extensive services so she's not trying to rip me off or anything.
I have to agree with her though. She can straighten my hair with hers on the lowest setting and it works SO much better then my Helen of Troy on on the highest setting. Also hers is so much smaller, so it would be easier for me to get my bangs with it. She says to get the one with temp control because you can put it on low and it causes less damage. I don't know how much more expensive those are. I did see that in Trade Secret they are selling pink Chi for Breast Cancer awareness month. If you buy that one they donate some of the funds. I always feel better about purchases like that, plus it's PINK! :Pinkbounc

My DD has the WeeChi. We got that one because, while she has long hair, it is really fine and kind of thin. But really, the WeeChi is almost too small and we will get her a larger one next time--probably the one inch. I thought that the Breast Cancer one was about 1/4 inch but they probably sell them in different sizes.

OH NO! Well I definately need something larger than that to tame my BIG OLE hair! :rotfl:
I probably wouldn't have brought myself to buy one before Oct 31 anyway. :confused3

I think you're safe with the pink one. I just looked it up and it is a 1-inch. Although if you've got "BIG OLE" hair, you probably need a larger one.

I have fine curly hair. I usually just go curly. Very easy. My stylist used a flat iron on me at my last cut and I liked it. I have a cheap flat iron. It works ok. I'm thinking of upgrading. What is a Chi? the brand name? or type of flat iron? I did a search on ebay for Chi Flat Iron and got a ton of them, some expensive ($100) and some cheap ($20). What is the difference? Are there fake ones out there? What should I look for when purchasing one? Thanks

Chi is the brand name of a salon quality flat iron. There are other salon brands that are probably as good but the Chi is just more marketed. Any Chi that is $20 is probably fake. Buy from an authorized dealer and you will get a warranty on it. I think you can get a decent one for about $120 retail.

Occasionally, Ulta has sales on them. If you combine the sale with one of their coupons you can get a decent price on it.
