I'm going to a party and I volunteered to take a chocolate covered popcorn, chex rice cereal and chex corn cereal. Well during Christmas I bought a box at Sam's or Costco. The box had 3 different types like chex: rice, corn and wheat. I went the other day and I can't find any :( My grocery store had a single box of corn and one of rice but almost $5 a box!!! I'm making a HUGE Batch. Is there a different type of cereal that is similar?? I saw one in the grocery ad at smart & final for life cereal, not sire if its like chex. I'm going today and hopefully smart and final has chex. Any other cereal I can use?? I really want the 3 different types of chex but if I cant find it I'll use pretzels :/

I told my husband if the box of the 3 types of chex is only sold during the holidays then I'll have to stock up in December. I'm trying to keep it budget since I already spent $150 for 2 gifts for the shower. TIA!

If you have an Aldi near you, their house brand of the Chex cereals is a good substitute, and pretty cheap! I bought quite a few boxes to make muddy buddies for a holiday party, and no one noticed a difference in taste. I know they definitely have Rice and Corn, not sure about the wheat option. They were each around $1.60/box -- hope that helps!

I agree with the Aldi recommendation.
Life cereal is a little different than Chex. If you can find Kellogg's Crispix cereal on sale, it's more like a combo of rice and corn Chex and should work well in your recipe.

And it may have come off the Chex line. Aldi does a lot of that.

no Aldi but a few will be opening soon. I ended up using the life cereal that was on sale for $1.99 and a bag of preztels $1.99 turned out great. If I ever see the multipack, I will buy a few boxes :)

I make homemade chex mix so often that my family got me a printed apron. I have bought hundreds of boxes of chex cereal so I'm experienced in looking for a bargain. Like you , I buy the multi-pack at Sam's Club when it is available. The Aldi cereal is great if you can find it. Other options, for future reference, would be store brands (I buy HyVee) and Big Lots.
Additionally, iBotta had a rebate last week for Chex cereal so you can sometimes find those rebates, or coupons.
Finally, Crispix or it's store brand version, is like Chex.

 I'm eating homemade chex mix right now while I surf Disboards. popcorn::

Anyway, 90% of the time I make Traditional Chex Party Mix, sometimes throwing in odd cereals, but mostly sticking to the recipe.
Other than that I make Kentucky Bourbon-Bacon Chex or BBQ Chex. I do have a whole pinboard of Chex ideas on my Pinterest site.

I know you already found your solution but I just had to comment. When my son was 2, he went through a phase where all he wanted to eat were rice Chex for almost 6 months. I bought at least 2 boxes a week. Target and Walmart are so much cheaper for Chex (like $2.44 or something). Sam's Club only seems to have the 3 packs during the holidays. And then I would stock up if the grocery store had a great sale. :)
