chemical handwarmers in carry on luggage?

Getting packed for marathon weekend and taking a few sets of chemical handwarmers (open the package and they miraculously heat up). Can I put them in my carry on along with all my other running stuff?

Are you willing to 'waste' one by opening it and checking the composition? If it's liquid/paste/gel/cream/similar, they'll have to fit in your 3-1-1 bag. If it's solid or crystals, no problem.

In either case, yes, you can carry them on the plane.

Ronda...the ones I have are some sort of granular contents. I'm taking some in my carry on, but most of them in my checked bag. I'm pretty sure I've had some in carryon luggage before, but I can't completely remember.

Definitely carrying on one set of running clothes and my best shoes and socks. Just in case!

Crazy thing...I'm packing more warm clothes, hats, and gloves for this darn race than I do when I go to Alaska!

The ones we buy from Costco & Modell's are some sort of a powder or something. You have to shake them up when you open them to activate. But you can hear the stuff shaking around in them & it's definitely not a liquid. I don't know about others... If you're unsure you could put them in your quart ziplock...

THe only thing I'm wondering about, is what kind of chemical reaction is it that causes the heat. Basically is there anything that may set off their sniffers if you get swabbed? Know what I mean? I'm sure some of the explosives bad people try to smuggle are a couple of chemicals that get mixed. I'd hate to have someone get in trouble for something safe. And no, I'm not saying these things are explosives
