I have a vacation booked to stay at the Contemporary Resort the week of Sept 18th. Already planning on dining options and have heard that Chef Mickey's is not that good. What is everybody's opinion on this? Is Breakfast or lunch the better option?

Everybody has a different opinion. You will get a wide variety of responses. If you are interested, go and decide for yourself.
In general, breakfast should be better as it is hard to mess up breakfast food.
You are paying for the character experience, not gourmet food. The food is typical, mass produced buffet food

I've heard the food is terrible there. I've stayed at the Contemporary and ate at California Grill, it's very good. The Wave is also good. If you're looking for a good character experience I suggest 1900 park fare instead at the Grand Floridian. You can jump on the monorail to get there.

We really enjoyed Chef Mickeys for the character experience. I do not remember much about the food except there was a variety. We also went on our first night and had been on airplane all day so we were starving!

I have eaten at CM every year for the last 9 years. I enjoy the character interaction which is the reason my wife and I go. The food is buffett style. This is not a place you go for four star dining. Once you accept that fact, you will enjoy yourself. As for the food, I have never had bad food. It was, in my opinion, tasty and like I said, we go back every year so it wasn't bad food. I understand some people complain because for the price they are expecting grand cuisine. You are paying for the characters. You will have to judge for yourself but I would suggest you go. We love the place.

No positives from us on this one. There are too many other places to eat that are close by.

We like CM. We don't like Le Cellier. You are going to get a lot of opinions based on a whole host of reasons. Chef Mickey's is a character meal, and the food is okay. We like it but know going in that we are paying for a buffet, not a cooked to order meal.

I agree! We go for dinner every trip. The food isn't awesome, but it isn't bad either. You are paying for the experience, and we always have a blast.

We had heard negative reviews also but went for breakfast anyway and didn't think it was bad. Our ADR was right after opening (7:10am or so) so the food was as fresh as it was going to be and the buffet wasn't yet a mess. Characters also came to our section quickly because we were one of the first tables seated and were right near the door they entered from. If we ever go again, I'd plan my visit the exact same way.

That being said, we had a better "food" experience with lunch at the Wave and dinners at California Grill. Those would be my top Contemporary picks.

we had always avoided Chef Mickey's due to negative reviews but finally tried it for dinner last trip and I was pleasantly surprised. The food was much better than I was expecting - decent variety and everything was warm/hot

I will say it still isn't our favorite character meal (that would be Tusker House) and it is a bit pricey for what it is - so it's not a "must do" for us every trip but I would definitely do it again at some point in the future

We really enjoyed breakfast there on our last trip. Characters were great and the food was fresh and delicious! I went in with low expectations after reading these boards but was really pleasantly surprised. Enjoy!

Go for breakfast, expect typical breakfast buffet. I didn't eat anything I didn't enjoy. Mickey waffles, fruit, eggs and bacon. What's not to like? Coffee is gross though. It's loud and overrun with kids. But that should be obvious at Chef Mickeys. It's crazy expensive but that should also be expected.

I'd go for a late breakfast ADR. you'll end up getting to try both breakfast and lunch that way at the breakfast price.

Go and try it for yourself. You will get all kinds of opinions with questions like these and a lot of the people giving opinions have never even eaten there. It is consistently my kids #1 request for every single vacation, so there has only been one time in all of our Disney trips that we have not eaten there (and that was a spur of the minute trip where we were trying to save some money).

We enjoy it - I love their breakfast buffet. We haven't had dinner there in a few trips, but I liked it the last time we did. So much so that I made an ADR for my birthday dinner there. My kids were thrilled and it's such a fun atmosphere, I love the idea of spending my birthday there for a time.

We went for dinner during our last trip and it was fine. Food was ok. I mainly stuck with the salads and lighter fare. There was a chicken entree that was not good, but otherwise everything was edible. Think cafeteria food... However, the desserts were actually pretty good. We mainly went for the character interaction and that was great. Our server was terrific. My kids say that CM was the highlight of the trip for them. They loved it. I will note that we were on FD and may not have gone if were weren't. It's far too expensive for what you get. For our next trip we are skipping it, but if my daughters requested it, we would do breakfast instead of dinner.

The food at Chef Mickey's has a range of terrible to pretty decent. It's a buffet, and it's got a lot of stuff. If you are aware of foods that probably do OK on a buffet table, you will have a decent meal. You will NOT have a meal comprised of gourmet food commensurate to the price. The food alone at Chef Mickey's is not worth the price. If you are going to Chef Mickey's for the food alone, you've made a grave mistake. If you are going to Chef Mickey's for these reasons:
1. First and foremost - the PREMIUM character interaction and photo opportunities
2. Meal that your KIDS will probably enjoy
3. Not having to wait in lines at the park for the CM characters.
3. Break from the park.
Then, I think CM is a decent choice.

I can tell you this. I also posed a few questions on diff dis boards trying to decide about Chef Mickey's. I was prepared for the food to be horriffic. Like (some) others have already posted in this thread, the food was acceptable (it was actually better than I thought it would be.) Again, was the FOOD ALONE worth the price? Nope. Nobody would argue that point. But, if you go specifically for the food, that's your mistake. Would it be fantastic if all of the food was great, and if ppl controlled their kids? Yup! On our trip, the characters were a riot, the food was decent, the buffet was clean, and the kids around us were better behaved than some of the parents I came across.

My suggestions if you are a meatasaurus:
Baked chicken, roast beef, short ribs, mashed potatoes, and desserts. On our trip, those things were worth loading up on. The RB was carved to order, and I got as much rare as I wanted, and I absolutely ate a pound of it. The short ribs were fantastic (again - buffet table "goodness" - the stewy cuts lend themselves to low heat and sitting.)

My suggestion to avoid:
When we went, the spicy tuna rolls (don't you judge me!) were not great. I had high hopes since when we go to other parts of Florida for vacation - the coastal areas, the sushi shines. I was hoping that the general quality across the state would be elevated. The fish was actually decent, but the rice was just wrong. I didn't throw what I took away though. It was edible.
My wife and kid tried the clam chowder, and each had about two spoonfulls, and both pretty much laughed because it was so bad. They said it tasted like it was a cheese soup base. That is just plain wrong. I didn't even try it.

I absolutely think Chef Mickey's is worth trying for yourself once. If the CM characters are not the characters you want, then that would be my deciding factor.

We went for Brunch (which I think is only on weekends) and I was pleasantly surprised by the food. It's by no means a gourmet meal, but there was something for everyone in our family and I liked everything I tried. We were a little disappointed with the characters though. We only got to see Mickey, Donald and Goofy and very, very briefly. It may have been the timing (went towards the end). A day later when we were waiting to get on the monorail around 6pm we saw Goofy entertaining a whole section of the dining room and it looked like everyone was having a great time with it. I say try it!

We enjoyed breakfast - both the food and the character interaction, and we dont care for most food at WDW.

Ive only been to breakfast. The food was average. Not amazing, but not bad. Its a buffet. If you dont like one item, there is bound to be another item right next to it that you will like!

I go for the characters. If I was going to one of the buffets for food, I would probably go with Crystal Palace or 1900 for no other reason than made to order omelets :)
