OK, my family is going on our first Disney Vacation - we're going the end of August - we'll probably arrive at our hotel about 4:00pm or so......... I'd like to unwind, maybe take a swim. How long would it take us to get to the contemporary for dinner? and how long to get back? i just want to start the vacation off fun, but not go to a park and get to bed early. My boys are 4 and 6 - they like Characters, but don't love them - should i do this or do you have any other suggestions?

thanx

You don't say where you are staying (or did I miss it?), so I can't say how long it would take you to get there. I'd say that your kids would love it, but not to book it on your first night. Our family's experience (DH, me, and DS, 7) has been that we want to let ourselves get wrapped up in and enjoy whatever it is we're doing on our first day/first night, rather than have to rush off to a reserved meal. If your trip is short then you might not have this luxury, but over the years we've found it works out best to let the first day take its own course. But in any case, Chef Mickey's is a great spot for a character meal!

We do Chef Mickey's on the first night every trip we take with the kids! It's a great start to the whole Disney experience! Especially if you aren't going to a park the first day, it's a GREAT idea. We always eat dinner, then take a ride on the Monorail (ask to sit up front, it's worth waiting a couple trains for IMO) and then head back to the hotel to get ready for the next day. They'll get to see the castle (heck, if it's early enough, change trains at the TTC and take the Epcot loop too!) and the lake, if it's late enough, you might even get a peek at the fireworks. :D

Now, how long it will take to get to the Contemporary depends on where you are staying, if you have your own car, or are taking busses... We always allow and hour to get there, it lets us take our time getting there- no running from the bus or parking lot.

OK now i'm thinking i'll do it on an off day in the middle of my vacation. Now should i do a Chef Mickeys, or camp fire at Ft. Wilderness and whatever else they have??????or both
