Cheese Plate at CG?

Checking out the menus on this website and one other website the Cheese plate is listed here as an entree and on the other website as a dessert. Can people who have been there recently and ordered it tell me what it is considered so I can plan accordingly.

In August it was available as an appetizer. You couldn't have it as a dessert. I think they keep switching it around, so no guarantees that will be the status when you go.

We've always ordered it as its own separate course before dessert or as a dessert We pay OOP though so I am not sure if you are asking about it in reference to DDP

The last 2 times I went to Cali Grill (this past May and August) I got the cheese plate for my dessert and I really liked it. It was covered by the DDP.

We were there a couple of weeks ago, and we were able to get the cheese plate as an appetizer or a dessert. We had it as an appetizer. Perfect!

CG will let you eat the cheese plate whenever you want to eat it...it's not up to them in what order you eat your food. Have dessert first, life's short, LOL!

I don't know if the cheese plate is included in the DDP though, I don't really know how that works (have never done it). You really must try the cheese plate though even if you have to pay OOP for it, it's amazing. We have it every time.

I'm going to risk sounding very unsophisticated, but if I can't ask here, where can I? I am not familiar with cheese plates, can someone fill me in on a few things...is the cheese served with bread, or are you meant to just eat it as it is? And what are those nuts and other unidentifiable goodies next to the cheese, are they meant to be eaten together with the cheese? Are they paired in any special way?

Can you tell I don't get out much?

Ah, no worries about sounding "unsophisticated" lol. Thankfully the servers usually tell you what to do in cases like this.

Each cheese is already paired with a fruit or nut type of thing by the chef, so they usually go really really well together. So, in my pic, the cheese on the right is across from something that goes well with it. I think if I recall correctly, the first one is a pear glacee, the second one is some kind of fruit chutney kind of thing, the third is almonds, the fourth thing is a slice of pressed fig cake, and the next is...um, can't tell in my pic and can't recall, lol...it may be a piece of honeycomb. We have had several cheese plates at CG and other places on property and they often have similar things....sometimes you will see raisins on the vine, for instance, or the honeycomb reappears alot, etc.

The last thing on the left is a round pat of butter. Next to it is slices of baguette to eat with the cheeses. Or not, really, I guess you could skip the bread and just pop a wee slice into your mouth....but it might be hard to do that. Often these days I have seen the cheese plates have different breads/crackers. There's a date/nut bread thing that seems to be really popular now. I prefer a blander bread, because the cheese and paired nut or fruit stand out more.

Now, order a really nice bottle of wine with that cheese plate and enjoy!

You may expect a cheese plate at any of the signature restaurants. We've enjoyed them at Jiko, Artist Point, Cali Grill, Narcoossees, and Citricos. Yachtsmen also has one.

The selection at each restaurant changes, so I can't recommend any particular one, though CG probably has had the most memorable ones, though all have been fun. We've had them on several trips, numerous times at each restaurant. It's a must-do thing for us each night when we dine at WDW.

Be aware that you will probably not be offered the cheese course menu until later in your meal, it's a more "European" way to offer the cheese course as a dessert or last course...though it's historically been a first course in the US. Ask for it, and eat it when you prefer. (We only had one server raise his eyebrows at us when we asked him to serve it to us first.) We used to like it first to enjoy with our bottle of wine as we waited for our meals, but we have since been won over to the European way of having it for dessert now.

Flying Fish also has a cheese plate. I wanted to order it but was afraid I could not eat all that plus my entree'! That seems like a LOTTA cheese. May have to go for it at the CG this December though, 'cause I got a ressie.

well, it's always better to share a cheese plate, especially so you can talk about the different tastes, textures, etc! (and how well it goes with the wine!)

However, it really isn't very much cheese at all, I think it probably just looks big in the picture because of the way I took it.

Compare the size of the cheese block that is next to the almonds--the blocks of cheese are only about the size of 10 almonds. If you eat this instead of dessert and share it, you should be able to fit it in.
