just wanted to vent about how high school cheerleading tryouts are. my dd who has been a cheerleader for the past 2 years of high school and last year was jv co captain didnt make the squad this year...they had tryouts and only 8 girls were cut - she was one of them, no explanation as to why and the other girls were in shock that she didnt make it..i just think that they should have atleast told the girls who didnt make the cut why and what they needed to work on for the future... what makes it even worse is that the coaches dont vote - they bring in other womaen from some university to judge these kids...reputation should count for something and some of the girls who made the squad are questionable....ooooh sorry just wanted to vent!!!!

I'm so sorry :( I am a cheerleading mom myself. We do it the same way , they bring in 6 judges from the NCA to do the judging . They do all the High schools in Alrington on the same day . Sometimes I think that after seeing so many girls the judges are trying to just get through them all .
My heartbreaks for you and your DD. My daughter is a Senior this year and I am happy to be done with High School Cheerleading .
I know how hard it is , my DD made it every year but there was a couple of years that she made herself sick before the tryouts because there were so many girls for 20 spots there were 47 girls.

Just remind her how wonderful she really is on the inside and out ! She will do even better next year then in the past because she will want it even more .

Good Luck !
Give her a big hug

Another cheer mom here. DD is a freshman on the varsity squad this year. First of all let me say I feel bad for your DD, I am sure she is heartbroken. I have to say that I agree with the way they bring in outside judges though, if it is the coach that does the judging it would be hard for her not to play favorites. She could be picking based on personality, not talent. At DD's high school they judge on a point system. The girls have to score a certain # of points to make varsity and a lower # of points to make JV. The coach is one of the judges, but they also bring in college cheerleaders to help out. Was there any kind of a scoring sheet filled out for the tryouts? I know that each judge fills out a sheet for tryouts here but I don't know if the girls a able to see the completed sheets. Hopefully your DD will get past this disappointment, I am sure it must be tough on both of you. Good luck! We have tryouts coming up in 2 weeks and who knows, I may be in your position then.

That is a shame - I actually agree that it is better if they don't know the girls and pick on ability only.

It seems every year at our school a veteran cheerleader gets the shaft through the same type of system. DD#1 wants to try out for 7th grade next year and I'm thinking we should stick with the dance team and avoid the aggravation.

My DD is a Songleader. She didn't make the team last year so took lots of dance classes and worked her butt off and made Varsity Song this year. Tryouts for next year are in a few weeks and she is already freaking out about not making the team. We also hire judges from another county to decide who makes the cut. All I can do is hope she pulls through and makes it, but if not, it will be okay. Things always happen for a reason. I am sure something better will be in store for your DD this year - chin up and have faith!

Another cheerleader mom here. My younger daughter just made the JV squad at her HS . She will be a freshmen in Sept. THey do the judging the same exact way, the coach doesn't judge, NCA judges are brought in. I do think that it would be tough for the coach to judge, way too many personal feelings get in there. It's painful to see the girls who already were on the squad not get a spot. It happened for 5 girls here on the JV team. I am so sorry to hear that your daughter was in this situation. It must be so painful for her and you too! Best of luck to you both with this most difficult life lesson.
