Do you think cheerleading is a sport?
This has been getting more controversial as cheerleading gains popularity.
I have big fights with my science teacher about this.
Mainly because i like to fight with him, cause he's annoying

That is the definition a sport.

I think cheerleading fits it.

Another from the Women's Sports Foundation:
  • A physical activity which involves propelling a mass through space or overcoming the resistance of a mass stunts especially basket tosses fit this part of the definition
  • A contest or competition against or with an opponent
  • Is governed by rules which explicitly define the time, space and purpose of the contest and the conditions under which a winner is declared i like the "time" part because the routine has to be under a certain time limit
  • The acknowledged primary purpose of the competition is a comparison of the relative skills of the participants
I'm talking competition cheerleading, not football/basketball cheerleading. Now THATS just annoying (IMHO), and definitely not a sport.

Thoughts?

** I messed up the poll, ignore the last "not"s in the 2nd & 4th option

Yes, it is.

But, like all my friends that are girls do it, so I'm use to them talking about it 24/7.

Absolutely.
People who say it's not are just don't get it (no offence to anyone). I would love to see them try stunting xD

Oh, and if golf is a sport
than cheerleading can be considered a sport
xD

ITA!

Yes, competition CHeerleading is a sport. I have a different perspective to answer it from--injuries that can be gotten from a sport! ;) My son played soccer, basektball & football. HIs injuries in the years he played: shoulder sprain, broken hand & severe high ankle sprain. My daughter was the cheerleader; her injuries: broken finger, wrist sprain, chipped tail bone, too many ankle sprains to count. Yep, based on injuries, cheerleading is a sport!! Deb

It totally depends to me.

The type of cheerleading that airs on ESPN and such and involves choreography and such I consider a sport.

However, to me, standing on the sidelines waving around a pom-pom and spelling words doesn't constitute a sport.

and thats just annoying xD

& i think its distracting to the players

I think it is.
Just competiton cheering.
Anything that takes training & working is a sport to me.
Anything that you can improve on is a sport.
I'm on my schools varsity cheer team, but that's not the only sport I do.
But for sure, It's a sport.

Competitive cheer absolutely! The things they do are amazing.

Yes, I think it is. Whether your at a game, or competition. I cheered for basketball and football before I got home schooled, as well as competitions also. It's pretty hard stuff when you go to a big school, way different then small schools as I've noticed. I loved cheering, especially at football games, the rules they had for us were strict and pointless, like one was we couldn't talk to the football team on game day; like during class..? :confused3 weird. Hmm, I also take dance, and I also think it's a sport, we do competitions.

Both are.

I used to do both, and while competition cheerleading is much more difficult, sideline cheering isn't easy either. You have to remember the choerography (sorry, I butchered that word.), there's stunts involved, lots of practices, etc.

I guess we have different definitions of sideline cheering, then. At my school all the sideline cheerleaders do is wave pompoms and spell out the school name. There's not much movement at all (well, they jump up and down...I guess).

Whereas our competitive cheer/dance team (they're pretty much combined) is much more...active.
